Subject: BS: digital cameras From: Tom Hamilton frae Saltcoats Scotland Date: 10 Jan 07 - 03:18 PM hello, I have just got a new camera and I've dropped it, I tihnk that Battery part might be damaged and yet I don't see any damaged part, I mean the battery door itsn't scratched oo anything like that, and yet when I go to replace the batteries I doesn't work. can anyone tell what to do? |
Subject: RE: BS: digital cameras From: JohnInKansas Date: 10 Jan 07 - 03:56 PM If you're using rechargeable batteries of the common kinds, many of them seem to have a tendency to build up an "insulation" on the battery terminals, especially during the first few recharges. The effect usually is less common once they've been through a few recharge cycles, but you may still see some corrosion that blocks the contact. Wiping the battery terminals fairly briskly on a course bit of cloth usually is sufficient to remove it, if that's the problem. The contacts inside the camera can also get "dirty," and the same sort of cleaning may be needed. You should NOT use anything abrasive on either the batteries or the inside contacts., but making them "shiny" with a cloth may help. Of course it is necessary to be sure that the batteries are fully charged. Some chargers indicate when charging is complete and some do not. A first charge for a new set of batteries usually takes at least 18 to 24 hours, depending on the charger. If charging the batteries, cleaning the contacts, and perhaps trying a different set of fully charged batteries doesn't work, you most likely will need to take it to a qualified service place, or try to get an exchange if it's new enough. Subject: RE: BS: digital cameras From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 10 Jan 07 - 04:21 PM Tom, it sounds like it might be something internal. If your battery was working before you dropped it and the suddenly stopped, the problem will probably require more than cleaning. Did you try a new battery and/or recharging the old? IF you did and nothing is happening, it might require repairs. I dropped my Kodak digital camera two years ago and it never worked as well afterwards. They are very delicate! Even Kodak's repair did not bring it back to where it once was. Good luck! |
Subject: RE: BS: digital cameras From: Bill D Date: 10 Jan 07 - 05:51 PM do be very sure the batteries are inserted properly. If nothing works, have it looked at in a camera stroe. |
Subject: RE: BS: digital cameras From: JohnB Date: 10 Jan 07 - 10:59 PM Check all the aspects, will it show pictures already taken? Can you connect it to a computer to download? Good Luck, I really hope I never have to start a thread like this, JohnB |
Subject: RE: BS: digital cameras From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 11 Jan 07 - 05:09 AM Commiserations to you, Tom Hamilton, on dropping your new camera. I had a Nikon, a few years ago, which I dropped. It didn't seem to affect the battery, but sometimes flash cards would register as 'No Card Present'. I had to gently wiggle them in the slot to get them to work. I also had a Canon 300D and, although I didn't drop it, I noticed that very occasionally the battery would sort of 'work loose' (the only explanation I can think of) and I would have to switch the camera off, remove the battery and re-insert it. I've now got a Canon 400D with a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 lens. It's really, really cool - I hope I don't drop that! |

Subject: RE: BS: digital cameras From: JohnInKansas Date: 11 Jan 07 - 10:15 PM I guess that makes my old poodle something of an intellectual free thinker. When he was a pup, he ate THREE TV remotes in the space of about 5 months. Or maybe he just couldn't find the channel he wanted? John |

Subject: RE: BS: digital cameras From: Mr Red Date: 12 Jan 07 - 01:42 PM Batteries are heavy and sometimes the spring that contacts the negative can be distressed or just entangled in the bump. Such that contact is not made on both ends. shine a light down the compartment and see what you can see. I have had to pull the spring (untangle or bend). Though there are delecate parts so anything could have severed. |

Subject: RE: BS: digital cameras From: GUEST,Jon Date: 13 Jan 07 - 06:47 AM Tom, I know it's answered now but I remember when we got a digital camera, the batteries it came with didn't last 5 minutes. Something like Duracell would probably do a little better but the only ones that do last a good time are rechargeables. |
