Greetings from snowy Worcestershire.

Getting on for a good 6 inches of snow and more forcast. Took me 35 mins to do 2 miles, husband has done his usual 80 miles to JBC and it took him 10 mins longer than usual.!!! But I think I may get home faster than him. Take care all if you're out in the weather. And now back to Cathie in the news room.

And it's snowing on and off in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. Children are sledging, buses are ploughing on and being very patient. The learner drivers, usually in threes down my road, seem to have disappeared.

The weather girls are delighted and relieved that their forecast has come true.

Nobody seemed to think they were going to work today at The Bull last night.

To sum up there are three camps of opinion - the goback to beds, the excited about making snowmen enthusiasts, and the 'it wasn't like this when I was a child, I walked 3 miles to school in two feet of snow' voice.

Take care PA getting home and remember - wrap up warm, take a shovel, drive slowly, comfort blanket, etc etc. We news people have to tell the public this information because people NEED us and they can't think for themselves.

There's plenty round where I live (N Herts). The roads seem mostly OK now though, apart from where I live where they were still treacherously slippery this morning.

As for KMC, I suppose you could try rubbing it on your cold bits (ooerr missus!) or stuff it in your boots, but it probably wouldn't do you much good. It's a sort of sugary peppermint stuff, that you eat. It comes in bars a bit like bars of chocolate - in fact you can get the chocolate covered version, which is much nicer (slurp!). I think it was taken by climbers in the Lake District (and further afield, like Everest!) as part of their emergency rations, for energy (from the sugar content, mainly).

Hi there snowballers !! Yes Worcestershire was quite dramatic last week but its all gone now. Ha 5 mins of fame indeed.

It was all very glam got me diamante wellies and me best shovel out, hair and make up done and did some dramatic sliding just in case we got noticed. Then husband told me to get of the sledge and let the kids have a go. Village got almost cut off by abandond cars one of which belonged to the husband had to tow him back down the road to the house. All very embarrasing.

You know when the brain police tell you not to go out unless its essential - what exactly is your interpretation of that, does it mean going to visit auntie, or a trip to the dump, or actually going to work? I'm never sure if you're supposed to be in or out ???

I think Biggleswade is a brill name. Do the residents wear goggles, flying jackets, and resemble Eric Morcambe with his sticking out scarf.
(Only people of a certain age will have any clue what I'm taking about.)

Verdict - the jury is made up of 'well known' people, the barristers are genuine as is the judge and the court officials. The courtroom is also genuine, the only actors are the girls accusing the footballers of rape, and the footballers. Its being filmed as a real court case, and following the lines of a genuine case. I'm not sure if its good viewing, but its certainly interesting if you've never been in a court at all, just to see how things work.
The jury are filmed in their room debating the case, as a jury would, and its interesting to hear their opinions changing with each piece of evidence they get. (except Stan Collymore, who decided she was a slapper and got what she deserved, from day one). The problem is with these things, once you start watching its becomes quite adictive. Tonight and tomorrow to go.

Sorry no Disney characters, but plenty of jokers. Patsy Palmer (Bianca from EastEnders) actually said she fell asleep at one point and sat writing poems on another occassion. The one I'm most impressed with is the bass guitarist from Blur. He's really got his thinking head on.

Whats the shuttleworth collection, a collection of shuttlecocks? What do they grow in a Swiss garden, gnomes or cheese. Oh and Mexican sandwich makers. Is that a sandwich maker from Mexico, or an ordinary sandwich maker which produces mexican sandwiches? You lead a very exotic life over in Bedfordshire.

Martin Dent (accordion/guitar/vocals), Derek Girvan (whistles/flute/bodhran/vocals) and me make up the Folkholics

We've been playing together off and on for the last four years and there have been other members that have joined in at times

We've started singalongs at a pub in Winkwell twice a month and play the odd gig

I think we're coming to the Orange Tree on the 21st March for a spot

Sorry PA, as I am standing buttering yet another hot cross bun and wondering why I am eating this, a thought has just come into my head - that I need to explain that Rhythyms of the World is a festival that takes place every summer in Hitchin. Crowds mill about and stages are set up around and about the town. One place where you can listen to performers, is........ you've guessed it......... Hitchin market square.

BTW I don't have any folkie long skirts, but I do have a Rhythyms of the World long black swaying skirt fit for purpose. It's well-known among female friends.

Hi Cathy - yes, it all went very well at Hitchin - it was in the market square

Lots of activity and a childrens ride with ducks, giraffes, fire engines etc - we were tempted to sing on the ride

We were squeezed a bit by the jazz band and an opera singer but we managed to do half an hour in the sunshine between 1pm and 2pm

It was a lovely day - I was sitting in the sunshine in me jumper (plus trousers)

A couple of beers afterwards at the Sunrunner

I was saddened to hear that Steph from the Blue Anchor sessions had died just before Christmas - I liked her and her poems a lot

Life passes us by sometimes

I've fallen in it. paddled in it, piddled in it, caught tiddlers in it, broken down on it, got drunk by it and on it, had picnics by it, kicked balls in it and generally caused mayhem with it

My dog once tried to jump across the lay-by type thingy at the side of the canal at Tardebigge Locks, didn't quite make it and did a 'tom and jerry' type stunt sliding down the wall in slow-motion into the water. You should read 'The Lock-keepers Daughter' cant remember her name now, wonderful story about growing up on the canal, even more interesting for us up here cos she lived at Tardebigge.

Sorry I thought Cathie said 'resurfaced' thought she was taking about road works not JB. Maybe he has been resurfaced.

Well, I would mention that I'll be at the Baldock one tomorrow (21st) at any rate, because Tam Lin are on at the Orange Tree, Baldock, this Wednesday (21st) (with support from a duo I think, but I don't know who they are). But modesty forbids, so I won't :D

But I hope it's OK to mention that Alan and I will be doing two 'Johnny Cash' gigs this Friday and Saturday:

- Friday 23rd at the Bucks Head, Little Wymondley (free entry)
- Saturday 24th at the Wheatsheaf, Eaton Socon (up the A1 near St Neots) - also free entry.

If anyone comes along to any of these events, it would be nice to meet you, so please say hello.

Did a song about the last nail maker in Bromsgrove, Charlie Troth, which of course went down very well with the locals. Apologies for mentioning this, if it clashes with any other gigs I've forgotten about, but Alan and I will be doing a gig at the Bucks Head, Little Wymondley, tonight, starting at 8:30 (we'll probably do a few different things first for about half an hour, before the legendary Johnny Cash makes an appearance).

We will be doing a very similar gig tomorrow night at the Wheatsheaf, Eaton Socon (I believe that's near St Neots, up the A1).

Both events are, naturally, free. So if anyone has nowt better to do and is near either event, please drop in and say hello.

The JC gig (oops, that's Johnny Cash, not that other famous person with the same initials you mentioned at Hitchin, Cathy) at Wymondley turned out to be great fun. Angela (a Baldock regular) and some friends turned up to celebrate her birthday, and later in the evening we ended up playing stuff by Buddy Holly, Elvis and even Tom Jones, at their request! I'm not sure how it happened, and we didn't know most of the words but that didn't seem to matter. Everyone had a good time which was the main thing. We (Tam Lin) have a gig there on St Patrick's night 17th March. I'm not sure who's on between now and then, but if I find out I'll let you know.

Our Sat JC gig went OK, but the pub wasn't particularly busy. Not quite so enjoyable as Friday's but OK.

Yes, we saw you last night Cathy but didn't manage to speak to you. I agree, it went more quickly than any other evening there I can remember. What a fab performance from them all - individually, in various combinations, and as a group. Difficult to imagine a better evening than that!

They would have to swim up to Leighton Buzzard where the river Ouzel feeds the canal, switch to the river and then swim down to the River Ouse north of Milton Keynes, then swim down river via Bedford/Pizza Hut to Bert's steamer anchored in St Neots Bay

Or they could fly, using Ryan Airs, Winkwell to St Neots daily shuttle

Did you know Anglo Saxons where only called that because they where Saxons from Germany living in England - They hated anglos and wouldn't even have sex with them - some historians reckoned they invited apartheid - but who knows?

Morning Campers.

I'm going to the dentist today. I have to have a root canal something or other. Whats one of those. Will I be able to eat toffee after. Had to go the Dental hospital in Brum on Saturday morning where they took x rays and tutted alot. I have a collapsed filling and a crack. I tried to make an appointment with my dentist yesterday but they only have two emergency appointments per week, one today and one friday. When I asked yesterday if i could make the appointment for today she said no I had to call on the 'emergency appointment day' for an emergency appointment. There are no emergencies on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays - or Saturdays and Sundays - everyone has perfect teeth on those days. My appointment is at 2.30 I didnt get the joke till after everyone in the office.

Depends on what they are doing

If they are doing root canal work it normally involves removing all the nerve endings within the tooth, so if you have further problems there is no pain

I've had loads taken out, so when my fillings fall to bits, which they often do, I don't get any pain

It's not too painful if they numb the gums properly

It can get a bit physical as they manipulate the drills to the mine face - the dentist normally has to stand on the chair arm with the Nurse supporting his crutch and a simple pulley from the ceiling bears the weight

Toffee is a no no anyway - what about your figure?

post 99 - I have never known much about my root canal fillings. I didn't realise that was what was happening around me. I take 3 Tamazepan tablets, as many numbing injections as the dentist wants to use up, twilight dream through the whole procedure, then sit up, crack stupid jokes to the poor dental nurse like I am drunk, walk perfectly well down 3 flights of stairs, get a lift home from hubby saying yes to whatever he wants to spend on fishing trips and equipment, sleep, wake up with a cracking headache, drink water and have boiled egg and marmite poppets, go back to bed and the next day all is 100 percent fine.

How was it for you PA?

Morning boys and girls. Sittin at me desk with a house brick in my cheek - or at least thats what it feels like. No pain from the actual filling just from having my mouth stretched to three times its size. My dentist said it was the most awkward one he's ever done. Top back tooth, and apparantely I have a very small mouth - husband does not agree.
However for the sad part, this time last week we rushed down the M5 and M50 at 7 in the morning to take my best friends horse to the horsie hospital for emergency surgery. Maggie the horse was in theatre for 4 hours and had 8 ft of intestine removed. After a week of hoping and praying that everything would be OK, yesterday afternoon Mags had decided she'd had enough and laydown. The vets gave my friend Lucy the call and she drove down to Tewkesbury to sit with her horse while they put her to sleep. Maggie was a beautiful white Connemara aged 15 and Lucy had owned her all her life. We're all very sad, and my silly old horse Red is wondering where his 'wife' has gone. Red and Maggie had been together for at least 12 years. Sorry to depress you all, I will be quiet today.

Sorry to hear about all the dental disasters. I'm a coward when it comes to dentists (especially the dreaded drill... aiiiieeeeeeeee!), and I've sometimes gone for years at a time without going to them. I use the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" principle when it comes to me teeth - but I was forced to go when I broke some last year at a barn dance gig when I crunched some cracking crackling from the hog roast. Luckily my new dentist is a very pleasant young blonde lady who makes the dreaded experience more pleasant that it would otherwise be. Not that her gender, age or hair colour have anything to do with it, of course. It's just that she has a nice chairside manner :-)

Yes, it was "Sorry", Ross. I didn't think much of the programme, but for some reason that catchphrase (said by RC's 'dad' in the programme) seems to have caught on.

I used to like bits of the Two Ronnies, though, especially the fake 'news' items. And some of the musical items were good (see other Mudcat threads for these). And of course sketches like the famous "Four Candles".

Not sure I understand the musical problem Cathy - to get from C to Am?

Drinking while playing guitar? That would be a dream come true. That's the one downside of playing guitar - you can't drink while doing it. Well, I can't anyway, as I need both hands for playing. I guess I could rig up a pipe to suck the beer through. Hmmm...

Maybe I should take up a one-handed instrument like the shakey egg.

But singing is another problem. How to drink while doing that? That's the real poser.

Sounds like you had a good one last night at the Bull.

'Twas a good session at our gaff too last night. There were so many people there I only got to do two songs (although I did play with the band too on several tunes). No Buddy Holly or Tom Jones this time though :-)
