Subject: Holmfirth Festival of Folk 2007
From: Soldier boy
Date: 06 Feb 07 - 04:37 PM

Hi there

This years Holmfirth Festival of Folk will be held on 11th, 12th, and 13th May 2007.
This is only about three months away so I thought I would start this thread so that you can put it into your spring and summer folk schedules.

There will be lots going on again, including concerts by Chumbawamba,The John Richards Band, Kate Bramley, Emily Druce, Gordon Tyrrall,Brian Peters,The Red Parrots and many many more.
Workshops for all ages, a family Ceilidh led by the Good Egg Band and lots of Morris sides (including the famous Britannia Coconut Dancers from Bacup) are all adding to this great weekend of talent and fun.

Holmfirth, heart of Last of the Summer Wine Country, will also be vibrant and entertaining with the usual lively musician sessions and sing-arounds found in the many pubs and hotels etc throughout the weekend.
Local and nearly local bands; OLd Man Pie, The Travelling Billberets and Free Sandwiches will doing their stuff and The Shellback Chorus will be filling the streets and venues with their powerful harmonies.

This is a real village festival amongst some of the most stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Pennines. The fact that it is village based means that everything (including camping) is only a short stroll away.
The abundance of excellent pubs,clubs,hotels,restaurants,take-aways, shops, B&Bs, and of course the festival concert venues etc makes this a very convenient, convivial and easy going festival with a really great friendly atmosphere.

Many thanks

Forgot to mention we have branched out into catering!
We have taken over the bacon buttie stall at the Farmers' Market in Holmfirth on the 3rd Sunday of the month - next one next Sunday.
I'm told the butties are excellent and very reasonable in price but you can also pick up information and offer your help.
Not bad for a committee with at least 3 veggies on it.

Will there be any catering on the campsite Cath - e.g a 'Moor and Coast' set up?   And,if not, will there be a marquee set up for singers/musicians when they return to the campsite at the end of the day?

Also could you please confirm that the campsite will be the one used last year which is only a short stroll into the heart of Holmfirth -and not the one used in previous years which was out in blue yonder.

Yes Soldier Boy it will be the same place as last year in the care of the local scouts.
We did have long discussions about catering in October and the outcome was that we should not provide food as local businesses were being asked to support the festival financially and therefore it was only fair to give them the business.
The scouts will have a marquee and are happy to serve tea, coffee and cocoa until 3.00 and it will be available for those who wish to sing or play when they returned from a hard day's folking.
Hope that answers the questions.

Thanks Cath and Ray.
That was a great campsite at Sands last year. Bags of room and very close to the centre.
Very glad to hear that there will be a marquee for folk to chill out in after a hard days' folking but I have the same question as Ray, are the poor scouts serving tea & coffee etc till 3.00am in the morning or 3.00pm in the afternoon? And will this service be available on Fri/Sat am and Sat/Sun am (presuming they do finish at 3.00 am)?
Great to get the scouts involved, bless 'em, but who is going to supply the matches to keep their eyes open all night?
Sorry! Questions, questions,questions!

Yes they have volunteered to do until 3.00 am, Friday night and Saturday night. It was their idea!

The Corner Cafe opened early for bacon butties etc. and it's an easy walk past the cricket pitch, the foundary and into Bridge Lane then either right and past the Co-op or up to Station Road and right down into the town. All in all no more than a 10 minute gentle stroll.

Anything else boys?

I'd think it would be better to keep bumping this thread nearer the date - otherwise you are going to run out of things to say.

At the moment you are giving the impresssion that you can only communicate through Mudcat.

WE ARE only communicating through Mudcat ...doooh!
And how does one "keep bumping this thread nearer the date". What do you mean Guest?
But I do agree that we are running out of things to say as is evident in the short inputs and too few people contributing to this thread. So come on people join in and have your say.
Last year this thread ran for over five months before the actual festival and had brilliant contributions from loads of Mudcatters. Where are you now?

Thank you Guest for helping to promote this years Holmfirth Festival of Folk will be held on 11th, 12th, and 13th May 2007 with you negative comments. A great ploy to enrage the less astute into contributing to this thread by taking the opportunity to call you a sad person who would rather complain than appreciate all the hard work that goes into running any festival. But I'm not going to say that all I am going to ask is will you be wanting Tomato Sauce on your bacon buttie? You know the one you can buy when you visit Holmfirth on the 3rd Sunday in the month. You know the ones that Holmfirth Hard Working Volunteers are making to raise funds for the festival. IT'S THIS SUNDAY!

Oh and you know you forgot to leave your name as a volunteer Cash Collector during the festival. Or do you think the money should be collected the weekend after the Festival.

Tyke, is GUEST the same 'Guest' I have come across before who flits from thread to thread infecting them with his/her evil bile and bad persona?
If so, this person is a sad and sick individual who is a coward to hide behind no name and is best ignored so they will eventually go elsewhere.

Well Soldier boy I myself as a Guest visiting Holmfirth at whatever time of the year have always been made to feel welcome. This is especially true during the Holmfirth Folk Festival Weekend. I'm sure that would be the wish of most of the people who are Mudcatter's to make Guests and anyone who contributes to any towards thread welcome. As they are interested like myself in helping to promote that thing we call "Folk". Inevitably there are people whose glass is always viewed as half empty by themselves. Now the best cure for this is for them to visit Holmfirth Festival of Folk I know it and you know it. We can but try and convince them of the warm Yorkshire welcome that they will receive when and if they come along.

I not going to mention any names but last year one Folky was so keen to return to The Holmfirth Festival of Folk he arrived the Weekend Before! He did not discover his mistake till he rang up his friends to ask which Pub they were in. When they said "The Fleece" he said, "which one is that" and they explained that it was between the Endeavour and the Middle Earth. He said well let's not mention what he said. Just let it be know that this is a man who's views his glass as if not Half Full it's Full. I can report that he did eventually get over to Whitby's Moor and Coast Festival, which is on the Bank Holiday Weekend and he was back in Holmfirth the Weekend after for your Festival. I'm not sure if he will make Holmfirth Festival of Folk this year however his many friends have promised to attach a Luggage Label to him with the Postal address of the Nook. So, should he make it to the Moore and Coast Festival he will then be re-addressed so that he will be returned automatically to one of his favourite Folk Festivals in Holmfirth.

OK so what can I say that hasn't been said already?

Excuse me if I start with a repeat - tickets for Chumbawamba on Saturday night are on sale at Holmfirth Tourist Information Office. The gig will start about 8.30 and there will be two support acts, one at the very start and one after the interval.

Tickets are on sale for the John Richards Band at CragRats on Saturday afternoon. I haven't seen them live but the pedigree is excellent and the CD is great - I was listening to it only yesterday in the car.

The Red Parrots are doing the Saturday ceilidh again by popular request and tickets are on sale for that.

Everything else is FREE but be prepared to throw notes and coins into the bucket collections.

The Jake Thackray Experience are back, again by popular request, and will take over the big room at the Old Bridge on Saturday night.

We've got workshops on voice, harmony, pipes, dance and most probably knitting! And lots more still to be finalised.

The kids stuff is Bread and Butter Theatre with a new Show as they were so brilliant last year.

There are so many dance sides that we will have to close all of the roads in Holmfirh and not just Hollowgate!

The flyers are out and should be appearing around the place, the campsite can be booked and the programme is planned to be out for April 28th.

Is that enough to be going on with? I could go on at great length about all the things that are happening but I suppose I had better save some to rescue this thread from oblivion occasionally!

The web site is being kept up to date and can be found on www.holmfirthfestivaloffolk.co.uk and I'm sure Tyke can make me a clicky for that!

Right - now to get on with making a couple of posters for Sunday's Farmers' Market Bacon Buttie Stall.

Does it never end?

Oh and I nearly forgot - Sheila from the Nook had a little boy last week and both are doing well.

Cath. Not mentioned so far I think can you confirm that the main venue for the concerts etc will be the Holmfirth Civic hall and not the Picturedome that was used last year.
Also, in light of Wetherspoons being refused permission to buy the Picturedome do you think it is likely that Peter will be forced to put on gigs to raise revenue to keep the place going and might this have some impact on the Holmfirth Festival of Folk in a negative or positive way?

The Civic Hall is the venue for Saturday night's Chumbawamba gig and the Schools' showcase on Saturday lunchtime. There will be a concert featuring the 'Emerging Artists' in between.

CragRats is happening on Saturday afternoon with the John Richards Band. Other concerts will be in the Old Bridge. Bands will be on at the White Hart on Friday and Saturday nights - The Travelling Billberets and Old Man Pie and a late edition to the programme is Carmichael at the Y Bar at the bottom of Dunford Road on Friday night.

Nearly all the other pubs will have something happening but it still has to be finalised who will be where and when and if I put it all on here there will be no need to buy a programme!!

Peter was already expecting that he would still be at the Picturedrome in May no matter what the decision of the planners and has booked in some events. I can't for the life of me remember who but suffice it to say they are not folk so as far as I am concerned it will just add to the variety! Let's just say that what happens there isn't part of our programme.

I fully agree Tyke. Peter did a brilliant job last year and if it had'nt been for the Picturdome and the excellent folk artists and gigs he put on there there would not have been the opportunity to continue the festival under new organisers and the new banner of 'Holmfirth Festival of Folk'.

This year it looks like Carol has excelled herself and has now organised something like 25 Morris sides over the weekend.
This will add fantastic colour and atmosphere on the streets on Sat 12 and Sun 13 May.
Many of these sides this year (including the world famous 'Brittania Coconut Dancers from Bacup') are coming from further afield, infact from all over the country. This means that the camp site this year will be much busier and they will add to the throngs of people drinking, singing, playing and drinking in the pubs and of course attending the concerts and workshops etc.
It is a fantastic achievement to get so many sides involved and it also shows how popular this festival is and how it is going from strength to strength.

It is possible (still in the negotiating stages) that Rowan - anyone who is a serious knitter will know who they are - are going to run knitting workshops on Saturday and Sunday so it might be nice to have some appropriate songs.

strangely chumbawamba did do a knitting song...

it was a long time ago in thier more rock and roll days and it was called "knit your own balaclava" and the lyrics were knit one, pearl one etc etc and went on to give all the instructions needed to create the aforementioned head gear !

As they are headlining on Sat you could ask them for a special request in honour of our new sponsors !

re picture drome - i have just got back from Holmfirth, and can tell you Pete now has put a mini banner up and has a couple of bands that will be playing over the weekend- inc a Nick Drake sound alike act. Pete did work hard on the 2006 festival and i wish him all the best.

With all the rumours and unknowns we deciced we would have to go back to the Civic for the Saturday bigger events- i dont think the fact that there is now stuff on at the Picturedrome is a problem tho. The campsite is open to all and the more people in the town the better - hope any one comming to the picturedrome gigs will come early or stay late and see what else is cooking.

also just read the local rag and someone has suggested Cragrats take on the 'drome as a project.. now there is an interesting idea.

Be good to think it would still be a useable venue in 2008.

finally Carol is now in a flap re dance sides as think we have reached capacity - i disagree and if people mail me not her re invites i am sure we can fit you all in ! cant have too much of a good thing me thinks

I agree p.b. More the merrier - and especially if they are coming from further afield and are camping over the weekend.
Some of the sides already registered to attend are quite small and some are only coming to dance on the Sat or the Sun and then return home.
So I don't think we are anywhere near capacity.
This could become one of the biggest gatherings of Morris sides at a festival in the U.K this year!

Anyone wanting a spot should contact me and book a 15 minute or 3 song session please with approx timing

I think some of the booked guests will be doing spots too

Later spots will also be available I suspect but will be given to those booking first

Morris men/ women will be most welcome as I do like some nice chorus stuff too!!

Whatever happens to the Picturedome in the future I sincerely hope that it will remain a major player in the Festival of Folk and in the local community as a whole.
Thanks also Ray and Cath for your comments and input.
There really are some very splendid people involved in this festival. All of whom ensure that this is one of the best organised and most friendly festivals around.

Just an update on the Picturedrome situation.
Anyone local will know that Peter was planning to sell the venue but that hasn't happened yet so he is putting on events as usual, some of which will obviously be over the festival weekend. He has a Nick Drake tribute band and a Johnny Cash tribute band on Friday and Jan Ackerman on Saturday.
The festival committee are quite 'cool' about this and see it as a plus for the festival but want people to know that the ticketing etc is all quite separate to the festival gigs.
We had to go ahead with our plans on the assumption that the
Picturedrome would no longer be available and that Peter would have left and that is what we have done. The circumstances have changed but it is too late for us to revise our programme.
So you have an even bigger choice in Holmfirth from May 11th - 13th than you thought you had!

Don't worry Lynn you won't have missed the ceilidh because that's on Saturday and the folk club is likely to go on way past midnight if last year is anything to go by. I've put times on the timetable but some of them are only for guidance.
The Nook is the place for sessions as always but be prepared for it to be heaving (even more so) on Friday night as it's also night out for Holmfirthers.

A rough translation - I don't know where we are on the camp site as I'm in France at the moment but the contact details for Alison are on the web site and bookings should be made through her.

Second-hand tea bags are fine.
In fact tea bags are an excellent example of the squandering of the planets' resources. Don't you know.
The average tea bag (with lots of dunking) can brew up to 10 cups of tea depending upon dark or light colour, according to ones taste.
Sharing of tea bags has become a modern day expression of friendship and endearment, so you, Tyke, must be billy no mates!
It also means less kettles boiling so less global warming.
And no,dozy rozy,I have not forgotten my drum but I will only play it to the tune of "Tetleys - did la did la dee..."!!

Could all Holmfirth Festival camper please help show Soldier boy how much he is appreciated by hanging your used tea bags out to dry on the guy ropes of his tent. I confidently expect the government tea bag recycling targets to be met over the festival weekend. After all Soldier boy not only plays the Banjo but he has a drum as well!

It's a nice sunny day so I'm hanging the tea bag I used for my morning cup of tea out to dry just for you. I know it's in the bin somewhere next to the bacon rind.

Also - all tea bags must be thoroughly squeezed dry so I don't end up with tea stains all over my tent.

Soldier boy there is good news and bad news from the HSE!

The Bad News is that dry Tea Bags would constitute a Fire Hazard so its wet Tea bag only and these are quite likely to dry out in the Hot Sunshine predicted for the Holmfirth Festival Weekend!

The Good News is that your tent should be safe from being trampled on if you make it visible by leaving your Drum and Banjo outside your tent. Should the now dried in the sun Tea Bags Burst into flame! I myself being well able to hold my drink but now sadly, at my age, not my water will endeavour to put out your Flaming Tent.

However you may need to have bought me several more pints in the Nook for me to have enough water left to put out a Flaming Banjo and or a Flaming Drum. Thats Several lot more pints come to think about it and I will keep them damp and safe all weekend.

No No No Tyke! You misguided person you.
What I spewed out above was not MY shopping/packing list; it was intended in a moment of drivel to be some kind of generic,semi-humerous, kind of all-encompassing silly list that an average folkie might pack for the weekend.
Some other obvious (I hope!) inclusions listed that bear no resemblance or connotations to me,myself, personnaly are rozin the bow, gargle for the voice (what voice!),matches to keep eyes open, visit the music shop,Banjo case (of course),duck, vitamin B12,viagra,hair dye, rozin, new batteries,plectrum,coffee-flask, breath freshner, hip replacement, brasso, denture adhesive, tweezers et al.
You fell very neatly into my trap there Tyke.
And I thought that you thought that you knew me so well....sob ....sob!!!

Well you will just have to buy me a few pints in The Nook now to make ammends. And that's the end of it.

Bye the way, I like the sound of 'Pyramid' tea bags - they sound quite posh!

And in the event of fire from combustable tea bags I have a special fire-extinguisher secreted about the tent so I won't require your excretions.

Damm! I forgot to add the secretable fire-extinguisher to the afore-mentioned list!!

You are right Cath.
Time for me and Tyke to end our jolly japes and concentrate on the Festival.
Tyke is right. Holmfirth Festival of Folk really is a great festival.

It is set in the the beautiful location of Holmfirth in the Holme valley. near Huddersfield,West Yorkshire,England.
This is the setting for the ever popular TV series "Last Of The Summer Wine" made famous by the likes of Compo (bless him) and Nora Batty etc.
This TV series has been shown all over the world. So if you come from the USA,Australia,Europe,Japan,Ireland etc etc why not come over to the festival and soak up the atmosphere.
This is a friendly and community-based festival where you will be made very welcome.

There's plenty of atmosphere to soak up with lots of concerts,Ceilidh, workshops, craft fairs, morris dancers in great abundance out on the streets and of course the ever-present musician sessions and sing-arounds in the pubs, wine bars and hotels.

The Festival runs from FRI 11 to SUN 13 MAY 2007.

Hope to see you there.

Yes you did start the thread a bit early, Soldier boy, still when this one reaches to 200 we can start a new one.

Then once we have recovered from what looks like being a brilliant Festival Weekend, even if your not one of the people Soldier boy has had to placate with Free Beer, we could start a Virtual Fantasy Festival guest thread. Using suggested guests with video footage. Put me down for Richard Thompson singing Beeswing!

It's just a thought for now! Let's throw all our efforts into Supporting Holmfirth Festival. OK we might not have dropped enough hints to book camping and tickets before they sell out. Good reminder once again from Cath. For my part every time Soldier boy buys me a beer I'll put the money in a collection Bucket to support the Holmfirth Festival of Folk.

Think it's only you I have to placate Tyke.
Looks like I'll need some deep pockets or else some cunning evasion tactics. Now then I wonder.....

It's getting close now good people so please don't miss out on booking your concert tickets and camping space for one of the best festivals you will come across this year.

I was thinking about becoming Tea Total till I found out all the disgusting things some people do with their Tea Bags.

However as the named driver/ MC of the concerts in the Civic on the Saturday I will not be drinking much at all so I hope we have some bottled water for the artists?

When all my duties are completed on Saturday I might manage one or two :-).

Tyke you still have'nt explained precisely what disgusting things people do with their tea bags. We are all waiting in anticipation.
Is it really so X-rated?
Can you give us a clue please or even, dare I say it, a short clip from YouTube? I promise to watch through only partially opened fingers and not to scream from the horror of it all.
I've probably seen worse on the battlefield but I am still nervous about the spectacle you might reveal!

I think that there are some bit's of YouTube best left alone. I was refering to your Tea bag habits Soldier boy. I didn't want to be too direct in case you got upset. Then having replied in haste ended up owing me more free pint's.

Sorry in a rush no time to proof read or spell check!

To get back to the music!
I went down to the Open Mic session at Number 11 last night and the range and quality of musicianship is just amazing. I left after 11.30 and they still hadn't managed to give everyone their allotted 2/3 numbers as there were so many performers.
They are a venue during the festival and will have Jamie Smith and Ray Moore as guests on Friday and Kate Bramley and Craig Morgan Robson on Saturday night. James Cannon is running a young person's Open Mic on Saturday afternoon and that will be a brilliant session if last night's 'young people' are anything to go by.
Anybody who suggests that live music is in decline and young people aren't coming forward needs to call in here and they will learn differently!

This years Holmfirth Festival of Folk will be held on 11th, 12th, and 13th May 2007.

There will be lots going on again, including concerts by Chumbawamba, The John Richards Band, Kate Bramley, Emily Druce, Gordon Tyrrall , Brian Peters , The Red Parrots and many many more.

This is a real village festival amongst some of the most stunning scenery of the Yorkshire Pennines .
The fact that it is village based means that everything (including camping) is only a short stroll away.
The abundance of excellent pubs, clubs, hotels, restaurants, take-aways, shops, B&Bs, and of course the festival concert venues etc makes this a very convenient, convivial and easy going festival with a really great friendly atmosphere.
