Subject: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: Bobert Date: 05 Mar 07 - 09:07 PM Hooray!!! My alma mata, VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) has just beaten George Mason in the CAA finals, 65-59, to nail down a bert in the NCAA tourament... Not only that, VCU finished the season with an outstanding 27-6 record... Go Rams!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: bobad Date: 05 Mar 07 - 09:11 PM March madness is once again upon us. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: Bobert Date: 06 Mar 07 - 09:16 AM Guess there ain't no other VCU alumi here... |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 06 Mar 07 - 07:21 PM Bobert, I am happy for you and VCU, but not for the NCAAs. 40 or so of the sixty-five teams, including VCU, don't belong in the tournament. They play schedules so weak as to be ludicrous. They are only there to provide more games, hence more revenue, but their inclusion mocks the championship series. You know, the NFL used to play a pre-season game pitting the previous year's champion against the College All-Stars (rookies coming into the league.) Every once in a while the All-Stars won, but it was so infrequently that the league got integrity and ended the series. Thus should BB limit the NCAA tournament. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: Bobert Date: 06 Mar 07 - 08:04 PM Those were also the arguments back in the 70's when VCU knocked Georgetown outta the NCCA tournie in the 1st round... Last year, the team that VCU beat last night to win the CAA, George Mason, went to the Final Four... I think yer world view of college basketball is a tad on the narrow side, John... And somewhat snobbish, as well... Bobert |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 06 Mar 07 - 08:29 PM Last year George Mason made it to the final four. Good Luck to VCU, Bobert! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: Bobert Date: 06 Mar 07 - 09:19 PM Thanks, Q... I'd be happy to see 'um win a game 'er two... I mean, that's really what the NCCAs are about is givin' a lot of teams an opportunity... |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 06 Mar 07 - 11:11 PM Are you calling it NCCA for a reason? Last time I looked, it is still NCAA. Is this an ol' Wes' Ginny affectation, Bobert? SRS (the UT Arlington Women went to NCAA a couple of years ago. Didn't last for more than a game or two, but they got there!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 06 Mar 07 - 11:12 PM I think I covered your argument in my second paragraph re: NFL. A team from a lesser conference might win a few games...even might win it all, but would not win a rematch (were one avail.) with a team from the top of a power conference. For pete's sake there have been a couple of teams in the tournament with overall losing records. Do you think they should be in the tourney just because they got lucky in their conference tournament? I don't. Call me a purist--even a snob--but the only reason for a field so big is $$$$$$$$$. If VCU wins it all, it will be a Cinderella story. You and they will have a right to be happy, and deep down I might have a warm feeling for a moment. But I will not be happy about it in a rational way. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 07 Mar 07 - 12:25 AM Ok, lets have only schools that hire million-dollar coaches and recruit athletes from around the world. Amateur athletics? No, just semi-pro. It's fun to see those that spend their money on academics upset a USC or Notre Dame or North Carolina or Florida once in a while. That is why I watch March Madness. Incidentally, both George Mason and Va. Commonwealth are large state-supported schools with world class research programs leading to doctorate degrees, and they harbor a Nobel prize winner or two. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 07 Mar 07 - 12:44 AM And that makes them great basketball powers? CalTech has great Nobel lauriettes, and have great research programs, but they're not a basketball school. One does not necessarily lead to the other. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: catspaw49 Date: 07 Mar 07 - 12:59 AM I think of it as March Madness alright. I know I'm mad. This stuff pisses me off every time there's yet another interminable analysis and special program airing repetitively, ad nauseum......and that's not to mention the games! Only NASCAR rivals it in wasted programming. Spaw |
Subject: BS: 2007 March Madness From: Janie Date: 12 Mar 07 - 06:08 PM Bobert's so busy this March he up and forgot to start his annual thread. Us hillbillies have to look out for one another, so I recken I'll do it for him. Generally, I'm not much of a sports fan, but you can't live right smack dab in the middle of Tobacco Rd. and not start loving college basketball. Half the ACC got invited to the dance, with teams playing in each region, so I guess I'll be keeping an eye on all of them. I'm right proud of my young Tarheels--who would of thought a team of freshman could have accomplished what they did this year--but will be surprised to see them make it to the Final Four. So....who is your money on? Janie Threads smooshed together. (This one won the jump shot.) - --JC |
Subject: RE: BS: 2007 March Madness From: Peace Date: 12 Mar 07 - 06:15 PM 13 Rules of Basketball - Written by James Naismith [in 1892][BTW, it's a Canadian invention]. The original rules. |
Subject: RE: BS: 2007 March Madness From: Janie Date: 12 Mar 07 - 06:28 PM Very Interesting! how big a college sport is it in Canada? More or less popular than lacrosse? Speaking of which, my kid has his first lacrosse practice of the season tonight. Janie |
Subject: RE: BS: 2007 March Madness From: Peace Date: 12 Mar 07 - 06:31 PM It is, I think, much more popular than Lacrosse, but it certainly isn't as popular as it is in the USA. The US developed the game. It didn't really catch on to that extent up here (with apologies to Alaskans to whom we are down there). |
Subject: RE: BS: 2007 March Madness From: bobad Date: 12 Mar 07 - 06:34 PM I notice that the original rules didn't include dribbling, that must have been added at some point as the sport developed. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: Janie Date: 12 Mar 07 - 06:35 PM Ah, but Q, North Carolina is also first drawer in academics. As is Duke. But I agree--I love it when the little guys make a good run. Janie |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: Maryrrf Date: 12 Mar 07 - 07:09 PM Glad to hear it, Bobert. My son is a VCU student! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: Bobert Date: 12 Mar 07 - 07:15 PM Wwll, shoot... Why play any games at all, John??? Let's just friggin' vote before the season even begins, declare the winner and save all the aggrivation of playin' the thousands of games that are invoved by Division 1 schools that bring us to this every year??? Might of fact, lets just outlaw basketball entirely and vote winners-if-basketball-still-existed... yeah, we could just lat a few PR firms have it it then vote and all would be well in yer world... Not... Then you'd go after baseball, then football and pudry soon there would be no sports at all except virtual sports but, hey... ...with yer logic then we could just vote on the winners of the virtual sports championships and do away with them??? Sorry, pal, but I don't get yer hang-ups with the ****NCAA*** (There, SRS, I am trianbale...) Bobert |
Subject: RE: BS: 2007 March Madness From: wysiwyg Date: 12 Mar 07 - 07:24 PM If it's going to stay as a thread, March Madness to me is HOCKEY as teams vie for playoff berths and as play escalates across the board (and across the boards). Wam! Bam! SCORE!!! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: Janie Date: 12 Mar 07 - 07:30 PM I got one to say about this whole arguement. GO TARHEELS!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: 2007 March Madness From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 12 Mar 07 - 07:38 PM Half the ACC got in the Dance...60% of the PAC10 got in. Likewise teams in each bracket, so I've penciled in an all PAC10 Final Four. I can dream can't I? |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCCA!!!... From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 12 Mar 07 - 07:39 PM I think you got it, Bobert! Virtual sports only. All souped up in those game boxes or whatever they call them, and everyone a couch potato. Fast fingers, fast eyes, everything else vestigial. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: Janie Date: 12 Mar 07 - 08:05 PM And let's hear it for the Women of the ACC! Just in-Duke and North Carolina are both number seeds. NC State and Georgia Tech are in, but I forget the seeds. And my hometown team, West Virginia-is in the Woman's tournament. Never had the money for even a nosebleed seat at the duke or Carolina mens basketball games here--but I do occasional go watch the Carolina women play. Them womenz play some real good basketball! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: Janie Date: 12 Mar 07 - 08:07 PM ummmm....that would be, duke and Carolina are both Number 1 seeds. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: Bobert Date: 12 Mar 07 - 08:28 PM Anybody but the danged Tarheels... Ain't they had their share allready??? Go VCU... Beat Duke!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 12 Mar 07 - 08:59 PM Bobert, you have a tough row to hoe. If VCU gets by Duke, they'll run smack into Pittsburg. Pitt is extremely defensive and I expect that will be the end of VCU...if they get by Duke. I did say 'if'. Women playing basketball??? Next thing, they'll get the vote. lol, J |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: Janie Date: 12 Mar 07 - 09:57 PM Dunno about that, John. By Tobacco Rd. standards, Duke sucks for air this year. Janie |

Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: ranger1 Date: 13 Mar 07 - 09:57 AM Seeing as how I didn't go to an NCAA college, I'm in the "I really don't care" camp (as to having a favorite). However, I do love when underdogs come in and win. Sports isn't all about prowess, it's about heart and how much you want something, too. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: Bobert Date: 16 Mar 07 - 07:20 AM Well, the Colonial Athletic Association plays a scrapy brand of b-ball... It's not just VCU but George Mason, Hofsta, Old Dominion, etc.... So, yeah, Pitt may beat VCU but if they do they will be happy not to have to play VCU every year... I'm just glad that folks got to see how a well coached, quick, hustling team plays and VCU certainly showed it last night... Go Rams... Bobert |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: KB in Iowa Date: 16 Mar 07 - 08:33 AM Cogratulations Bobert. That was a good game from what I saw of it. They had the MSU-Marquette game on in this area until the second half, MSU had a pretty big lead so they cut to the VCU game. Normally I hate it when they do that but it was OK this time, the ending of your game was a treat. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: Bobert Date: 16 Mar 07 - 01:09 PM Thnaks, KB... Yeah, heck of an ending... That Eric Meynor, VCU's point guard has been doing this all season long... |

Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: catspaw49 Date: 17 Mar 07 - 04:31 PM Well Bobert, VCU was the only surprise in the first round and the ACC teams are dropping like flies. Maybe we'll meet but only if we both make the final! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Hooray! VCU to NCAA!!!... From: Bobert Date: 17 Mar 07 - 07:37 PM Sniff... VCU, having overcome a 19 point defict took Pitt to OT but couldn't pull it out in a, 84-79 loss but... ...hey, I'm happy for them... Everyone saw the brand of b-ball they play and their trapping d-fense is probably the best in the country and so... ... there's some kid out there who watched that who is has been recruited by ACC teams and VCU who is gonna say to himself, "Hey, I want to play with those guys..." At this level that's what it's about... VCU, as well as lots of other "mid-major" teams just don't have access to the better players and it takes something like taking a 3rd seed to OT to get folks attention... VCU know has to get a long term contratc with Coach Grant an' all will be well.... Good job, Rams!!! You done us all well... Bobert ('70 and '76 alumni...) |
