Kendall my friend, it comes to us all, and it only really hurts us who are left behind. Those who are gone are past pain, and better off than us in that respect. It's been a long time coming, mourn him decently, and enjoy the memories.

I have no complaint about vets being treated for alcoholism but when they are taking up room that a seriously damaged vet could be using, that's different. Alcolohism is self inflicted and should not be on the same level as combat wounded.

VA's are for ALL medical needs of vets, not only war-related.

Knew someone treated for advanced alcoholism in a VA-- best treatment he ever got.

Don't be too hard on your brother. He saw things in Korea that no one was meant to see. We raise our sons to be good decent people then ship them off to defend their country. But let's not talk about disemboweled babies, rapes, lost limbs, burned bodies. Let's not deal with the mind changes brought on by living in fear 24/7. Better it should all fester in their minds than have the general population and our government face reality. War is not pretty or noble or full of strong shining young faces. Its horrors corrupt all who are involved.
John McCain went through years of night terrors and worse before coming to terms with his past. Many are not so lucky. A friend of mine, an ex-Marine and opera singer, told me in a weak moment about hiding in a trench in Korea and hearing his buddies screaming for their mothers. He still wept over it.
Your brother is a good man. He deals with his demons the best he can.
He is one of those we honor on Veteran's Day. The dead ones are remembered as young and strong and good. The living disgrace themselves with drugs and alcohol while we stick them in sub-standard rooms at Walter Reed.

Here is another forgotten casualty for George to ignore. My Brother served in Korea in the field artillery where he sacrificed his hearing. Now, he's in a private nursing home waiting for admission to the VA hospital. I don't know myself but I'm told that VA hospitals are full of alcoholics. What does that have to do with battle scars? It may be a result of serving but it's not like having a leg shot off!

I just got word that my brother died. I saw it coming a year and a half ago but it is still a shock. The end of an era.
