Subject: Rev. Gary Davis Lyrics From: Larry Lamovsky Date: 25 Dec 97 - 03:39 PM Can anyone help me with Rev. Gary's lyrics to "Sampson and Delilia?" Also, does anyone know of a currently available recording of this song? If anyone has one they'd like to tape, I'd be more than willing to trade for something I've got. E-mail me at LLamof@aol.com. |
Subject: RE: Rev. Gary Davis Lyrics From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Dec 97 - 01:26 AM Hi, Larry - Let me link you to The Peter, Paul and Mary Web Site for that one. It's on their self-titled album, and on "In Concert." Something makes me think Dave Van Ronk also did a recording of the song. You could do a song title search at cdnow.com and see if there are others. The song may also be known as "If I Had My Way." Hope that helps. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: Lyr Add: SAMSON AND DELILAH From: Max Date: 27 Dec 97 - 01:29 AM SAMSON AND DELILAH (Traditional) If I had my way, I would tear this old building down.
Well Delilah was a woman, she was fine and fair,
If I had my way, if I had my way, if I had my way,
You read about Samson, all from his works,
If I had my way, if I had my way, if I had my way,
Now Samson and the lion, they got in a tack,
If I had my way, if I had my way, if I had my way, |

Subject: Lyr Add: I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD From: Brian Hoskin Date: 06 Oct 98 - 03:17 AM I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD (rec. NYC 1935)
Just as long as I'm in this world.
Oh, you shouldbelieve in Jesus and every word He say.
Just as long as I'm in this world.
Oh, I've got fiery fingers, I've got fiery hands.
Just as long as I'm in this world.
(Talk to me.)
Oh, well, prayer is the key of Heaven, and Faith unlocks
Long as I'm in this world.
(Talk to me, now.)
Oh, I know I've been converted, God knows I ain't ashamed.
Just as long as I'm in this world.
Just as long as I'm in this world. |

Subject: RE: Rev. Gary Davis Lyrics From: Art Thieme Date: 06 Oct 98 - 09:34 PM a trivia question: Who was in the group that showed up unannounced at the first University of Chicago Folk Festival in 1961 and they were so fine they were inserted into an eveng concert?? One of the songs they sang that night was "SAMSON AND DELELIAH". Also, who was the unknown solo female singer that blew everyone away when she was also added to an evening concert at the sane U. of Chi. Festival?? |
Subject: RE: Rev. Gary Davis Lyrics From: Art Thieme Date: 07 Oct 98 - 10:51 AM The group: called themselves on the spur of the moment (just a group of friends that came to the festival): MARSHALL BRICKMAN AND TROUP Marshall Brickman (later a comedy writer for the original Sat. Night Live in the Belushi-Murray-Radner-Chase years) Danny Kalb who played behind many in the '60s and was a member of Dave Van Ronk's jug band Eric Weisberg (later one of the Tarriers and the 5-string wizard who played "Dueling Banjos" in the film DELIVERANCE) Paul Prestopino (who backed up the Chad Mitchell Trio after Jim McGuinn (later called Roger in The Byrds) left that job. He was "Jim" in Chicago when he was in highschool and a part of THE FRETS, a trio with John Carbo and Louis McDonald -- the house band for the Sunday afternoon hootenannys at the original folk mecca/club, the GATE OF HORN, in Chicago.1959 and two others I can't recall. The female singer was the young and freshly arrived in the USA, JEAN REDPATH. She sang "THE SONG OF THE SEALS" and mesmerized the entire audience. Since then I found it sung by the grand tenor, JOHN McCORMACK (around 1908). Art |
Subject: RE: Rev. Gary Davis Lyrics From: Art Thieme Date: 07 Oct 98 - 05:10 PM Gary Davis was a giant of a guitar player. He came to the U. of Chicago Festival one year and just wouldn't keep his sets within the time he'd been allowed. He played one instrumental for 35 minutes without stopping---A milatary march. He was told after that set (which was supposed to be 20 minutes total) that he wouldn't get paid unless he went back to New York and came back WITH HIS WIFE! She was the only person who could control Gary in those days. He flew home to New York. He and his wife flew back to Chicago. She kept Rev. Davis away from the booze & all went fine after that. Andy Cohen has a great new CD doing some of Gary Davis's best songs!! It's a grand tribute to his mentor and teacher. Art |
Subject: RE: Rev. Gary Davis Lyrics From: wysiwyg Date: 05 Jun 01 - 01:35 AM "Oh Glory How Happy I Am," a new CD of Davis' sacred material interpreted by Andy Cohen. The liner notes are great, with good tips for pickers included for many pieces. Cohen explains that in many cases there was no definitive version of a Davis piece-- floating verses. Made up new or fished up from memory for each occasion. I have several that may not be posted here at the Cat yet, but the versions I will post are my own edits to make them work for our Saturday Night Service. That bother anyone? *G* ~Susan |
