Can anyone help me with Rev. Gary's lyrics to "Sampson and Delilia?" Also, does anyone know of a currently available recording of this song? If anyone has one they'd like to tape, I'd be more than willing to trade for something I've got. E-mail me at LLamof@aol.com.

Hi, Larry - Let me link you to The Peter, Paul and Mary Web Site for that one. It's on their self-titled album, and on "In Concert." Something makes me think Dave Van Ronk also did a recording of the song. You could do a song title search at cdnow.com and see if there are others. The song may also be known as "If I Had My Way." Hope that helps.

Larry- If you have songs we don't have, don't trade 'em---post 'em here. That way everybody shares Larry- If you have songs we don't have, don't trade them--post 'em here. That way, everybody can share them. That's the idea behind this site.

I always seem to write tangential messages to threads. Here goes another one. Are The Reverend Gary Davis and Blind Gary Davis the same people

Thanks,

SAMSON AND DELILAH
(Traditional)

If I had my way, I would tear this old building down.

Well Delilah was a woman, she was fine and fair,
She had good looks, God knows, and coal-black hair,
Delilah she gained old Samson's mind.
When first he saw this woman, you know he couldn't believe his mind.
Delilah she climbed up on Samson's knee,
Said tell me where your strength lies if you please.
She spoke so kind and she talked so fair,
Well Samson said, Delilah cut off my hair.
You can shave my head, clean as my hand
And my strength will become as natural as any old man.

If I had my way, if I had my way, if I had my way,
I would tear this old building down.

You read about Samson, all from his works,
He was the strongest man that ever had lived on earth.
One day when Samson was walking along,
Looked down on the ground, he saw an old jawbone.
He stretched out his arm, God knows, chains broke like thread,
When he got to moving, ten thousand was dead.

If I had my way, if I had my way, if I had my way,
I would tear this old building down.

Now Samson and the lion, they got in a tack,
Samson he crawled up on the lion's back.
You read about this lion, he killed a man with his paws,
But Samson got his hands around that lion's jaws.
He ripped the beast till he killed him dead.
The bees made honey in the lion's head.

If I had my way, if I had my way, if I had my way,
I would tear this old building down.

I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD (rec. NYC 1935)

Just as long as I'm in this world.
I am the light in this world.
Just as long as I'm in this world.
I am the light in this world.

Oh, you shouldbelieve in Jesus and every word He say.
When He come all the way down to Lazarus' grave and raised
him from the dead.

Just as long as I'm in this world.
I am the light of this world.
Just as long as I'm in this world.
I am the light of this world.

Oh, I've got fiery fingers, I've got fiery hands.
And when I get up in heaven, gonna join that fiery band.

Just as long as I'm in this world.
I am the light of this world.
Just as long as I'm in this world.
I am the light
Oh, I am the
Ooh, I am the light of this world.

(Talk to me.)

Oh, well, prayer is the key of Heaven, and Faith unlocks
the door.
That's why my God gave me the key to Heaven, Told me to
carry it everywhere I go.

Long as I'm in this world.
I am the light of this world.
Just as long as I'm in this world.
I am the light of this world.

(Talk to me, now.)

Oh, I know I've been converted, God knows I ain't ashamed.
For the Holy Ghost is my witness and the angels done
signed my name.

Just as long as I'm in this world.
I am the light of this world.
Just as long as I'm in this world.
I am the light of this world.

Just as long as I'm in this world.
I am the light of this world.
Just as long as I'm in this world.
I am the light of this world.

a trivia question:
Who was in the group that showed up unannounced at the first University of Chicago Folk Festival in 1961 and they were so fine they were inserted into an eveng concert??
One of the songs they sang that night was "SAMSON AND DELELIAH".
Also, who was the unknown solo female singer that blew everyone away when she was also added to an evening concert at the sane U. of Chi. Festival??

The group:
called themselves on the spur of the moment (just a group of friends that came to the festival):
MARSHALL BRICKMAN AND TROUP
Marshall Brickman (later a comedy writer for the original Sat. Night Live in the Belushi-Murray-Radner-Chase years)
Danny Kalb who played behind many in the '60s and was a member of Dave Van Ronk's jug band
Eric Weisberg (later one of the Tarriers and the 5-string wizard who played "Dueling Banjos" in the film DELIVERANCE)
Paul Prestopino (who backed up the Chad Mitchell Trio after Jim McGuinn (later called Roger in The Byrds) left that job. He was "Jim" in Chicago when he was in highschool and a part of THE FRETS, a trio with John Carbo and Louis McDonald -- the house band for the Sunday afternoon hootenannys at the original folk mecca/club, the GATE OF HORN, in Chicago.1959
and two others I can't recall.

The female singer was the young and freshly arrived in the USA, JEAN REDPATH. She sang "THE SONG OF THE SEALS" and mesmerized the entire audience. Since then I found it sung by the grand tenor, JOHN McCORMACK (around 1908).

Gary Davis was a giant of a guitar player. He came to the U. of Chicago Festival one year and just wouldn't keep his sets within the time he'd been allowed. He played one instrumental for 35 minutes without stopping---A milatary march. He was told after that set (which was supposed to be 20 minutes total) that he wouldn't get paid unless he went back to New York and came back WITH HIS WIFE! She was the only person who could control Gary in those days. He flew home to New York. He and his wife flew back to Chicago. She kept Rev. Davis away from the booze & all went fine after that.

Andy Cohen has a great new CD doing some of Gary Davis's best songs!! It's a grand tribute to his mentor and teacher.

"Oh Glory How Happy I Am," a new CD of Davis' sacred material interpreted by Andy Cohen.

The liner notes are great, with good tips for pickers included for many pieces. Cohen explains that in many cases there was no definitive version of a Davis piece-- floating verses. Made up new or fished up from memory for each occasion.

I have several that may not be posted here at the Cat yet, but the versions I will post are my own edits to make them work for our Saturday Night Service.

That bother anyone? *G*

~Susan
