Quite a few replicas have been built of legendary sailing vessels, but the Bluenose II is quite well known as one of the best. I saw her a few years....geeziz, maybe 9 or 10 now....in Annapolis. Truthfully, I could generally not give a turkey about older sailboats, but the BII has a certain charisma and a look about her that's hard to describe. I was in Lunenburg on a wintry November day about three years ago, and I didn't think I'd see her there, but there she was. She was surrounded by piers on three sides, so I couldn't get a good photograph of her, but it sure was s thrill to see her. I built a plastic model of the Bluenose when I was a kid, and I collected Canadian dimes - partly because I liked the Bluenose so much. I think there's a certain perfection in her lines. There were several schooners built in Lunenburg, and all look pretty much the same, but there's something about the Bluenose that made her stand out as the most beautiful schooner ever built. -Joe Offer- |

I had sheet music one time for the song but I haven't clue where it is now. I typed "The Ballad of The Bluenose" into my AOL search engine and got a listing for a book called "Canada Is Song 7-8" . Robert Temple, a young entrepeneur of the early 18th-century, brought 500 Irish settlers to a region in Maine known at that time as Sagadahock. He settled first on Temple Bar near Bath, Maine on the Kennebec River. He then settled all of these Irish immigrants north of present day Bath near Merrymeeting Bay and named the settlement after Cork Ireland. Native Americans gave them a rough time and burned them out and the fled the province. Their descendents moved back to claim the land when forts were established on the Kennebec. It's a pretty good house, and I see some familliar faces out in the dark... While I'm setting up I decide what song I'm gonna start with... And after a quick sound check, armed with coffee and water I hit it... "Once again with the tide she slips her lines And a table off on one side of about 12 or 20 guys go's absolutely nuts!!! They applaude my starting, they sing on the chorus, "Who will know the Bluenose in the sun..." and they keep me lubricated all night... on my first break I go sit with them to find out what the score is... turns out they're the crew of the Bluenose II in town for the weekend showing off the boat up and down the Great Lakes... the gig was easy as butter all night.. and to top it all off, I got to stand at the wheel late that night (o.k... early the next morning...) She was still tied down, but I didn't care... Thanks Stan... I owe ya one for that... ;-) |

However! I have gotten some information on two other songs. Stan Rogers' song as well as Dan McKinnon's song. From: Daniel McKinnon Hello George, I can tell you about two of the songs but the third, Dave Martins, I know nothing about. I don't even think I've heard it. Michael Stanbury's song the "The Bluenose Song" was written to celebrate the launch of the Bluenose II. I'm not sure but I even think it might have been commissioned by Oland's Brewery, who were the reason behind the Bluenose II being built, (I believe they were looking for a spectacle or a big press opportunity to help launch their new beer, Schooner). So it was written around '61 or '63, whenever the Bluenose II was launched, as well as the beer. ( I actually had the chance to sing it with Michael one evening a few years ago which was a real treat.) Of Stan Rogers' song, "Bluenose", I will go into the whole story, "from the horses mouth", so to speak. Murray Creed, the originator and producer of CBC's Market Place and Country Canada, was asked to, and did film a large piece on the Bluenose II for a small television documentary. He was in Toronto with a couple of others responsible for the film, and they were in a hotel across the street from the CBC studio talking with John Allan Cameron about writing some music for their documentary on the Bluenose II. While talking, John Allen mentioned a friend of his was over in the CBC studio at that very moment and might add to the documentary. They said go get him and we'll give a listen. So he went and got Stan, brought him back to the hotel room and he played "Make and Break Harbour" for them. Apparently that was it. They got Stan to write a few songs and when it came down to the recording session for the documentary they asked John Allen if he wouldn't mind if they didn't use him. They loved all Stan's music, and voice. That was somewhere around 1978. Murray Creed told me this after he commissioned me to write "Sea of Change" and "When the Under-run is Done" for another documentary he had filmed. This is the best I can do George. Now regarding "The Captain & the Queen", all I can do is send the words off to you. I hadn't seen this thread or I would have posted it here: There have been references in this thread to the pride of Canada, the Bluenose. A few years ago a replica of the original Bluenose (said to be an exact replica) was built, also in Lunenberg, Nova Scotia. The Irish Rovers, based in British Columbia, did this song on their recording, "Tall Ships and Salty Dogs." I'm pretty sure (but not positive) that it was written by Will Millar now (alas!) retired, but for many years the leader of the Irish Rovers. It commemorates the building and launching of the NEW Bluenose. A great song, the lyrics go like this:

CHO: Bluenose, the ocean knows her name
For 25 long years she ruled the northern sea, CHO:
