A Friend is seeking information on the source of this song. Anyone know who wrote it and when? Anyone have a tune for it? I'll pass along any information you Maritimers can provide. Thanks.

BLUENOSE
(Doug Skilling and Davit Martin)

In the town of Lunenburg down Nova Scotia way
In nineteen twenty-one on a windy day
A sailing ship was born, "Bluenose" was her name
You'll never see her kind again

{Refrain}
Bluenose, the ocean knows her name
Sailors know how proud a ship was she
Bluenose, leading in the wind
Racing ev'ry way on the sea

Her hull was long and black, her sails were snowy white
She looked just like a young bird in flight
And from the very first, the Bluenose loved to run
She loved the smell of sea and sun
{Refrain}

For twenty-five long years she ruled the Northern sea
Riding like a queen on the tide
In the Caribbean one dark and stormy day
She ran into a reef and died
{Refrain}

Now just the other day, down Nova Scotia way
In Lunenburg they christened a ship
Just like the old Bluenose, down to the very name
The Bluenose lives and sails again
{Refrain}

Sandy

Sandy,

Ryan's Fancy recorded it about 25 years ago. Its on an album of theirs along with Mist Covered Mountains of Home, and Tie Me Down. I can dig out the LP from the Closet of No Return if you like. But I'm sure someone will have the answer before I surface again for Beers and oxygen.

The reason she ran into a Carribean reef and died is because the Canucks carelessly sold her to a Yankee with more money than brains. The government of Nova Scotia (or was it the Canadian?) had a replica built which is still afloat I believe, and not for sale under any circumstances...:>)

Like Amos' this has nothing to do with what you asked Sandy, but the BII is still sailing and is an excellent replica piece. Quite a few replicas have been built of legendary sailing vessels, but the Bluenose II is quite well known as one of the best. I saw her a few years....geeziz, maybe 9 or 10 now....in Annapolis. Truthfully, I could generally not give a turkey about older sailboats, but the BII has a certain charisma and a look about her that's hard to describe. Some boats just have soul.... and others are just boats. Kinda' like people.......

Thanks to all of you. I can respond to the questioner and tell 'em why they should have gone to the Mudcat themselves! I knew I could count on you. Now, can anyone come up with the year the song was written? That would really nail down the last of the info my friend wants or needs.

I share your admiration for the Bluenose II, Spaw. I was in Lunenburg on a wintry November day about three years ago, and I didn't think I'd see her there, but there she was. She was surrounded by piers on three sides, so I couldn't get a good photograph of her, but it sure was s thrill to see her. I built a plastic model of the Bluenose when I was a kid, and I collected Canadian dimes - partly because I liked the Bluenose so much. I think there's a certain perfection in her lines. There were several schooners built in Lunenburg, and all look pretty much the same, but there's something about the Bluenose that made her stand out as the most beautiful schooner ever built.

I just tried to find the year for you in my folk songs of Nova Scotia song book...no luck. I also wanted to tell everyone that the bluenose is on the Canadian dime...but someone stole my fun. I can sing the tune to the song...learned it in grade school...(I live in Canada)...but that is no help since you can't hear me. Three strikes and your out!

Sandy,

My memory, which has become faulty of late, recalls 1963 as the date but I can't swear to it. I had sheet music one time for the song but I haven't clue where it is now. I typed "The Ballad of The Bluenose" into my AOL search engine and got a listing for a book called "Canada Is Song 7-8" . May be someone from the Frozen North can do you better with this knowledge.

Brian,

Here's another tidbit about Temple Bar. I know this has nothing to do with the Bluenose.

Robert Temple, a young entrepeneur of the early 18th-century, brought 500 Irish settlers to a region in Maine known at that time as Sagadahock. He settled first on Temple Bar near Bath, Maine on the Kennebec River. He then settled all of these Irish immigrants north of present day Bath near Merrymeeting Bay and named the settlement after Cork Ireland. Native Americans gave them a rough time and burned them out and the fled the province. Their descendents moved back to claim the land when forts were established on the Kennebec. Hayden Temple lives there today.

So about 2 or 3 years ago.. I'm getting ready to kick off yet another pub gig... It's a pretty good house, and I see some familliar faces out in the dark... While I'm setting up I decide what song I'm gonna start with... And after a quick sound check, armed with coffee and water I hit it...

"Once again with the tide she slips her lines
Turns her head and comes awake..."

And a table off on one side of about 12 or 20 guys go's absolutely nuts!!! They applaude my starting, they sing on the chorus, "Who will know the Bluenose in the sun..." and they keep me lubricated all night... on my first break I go sit with them to find out what the score is... turns out they're the crew of the Bluenose II in town for the weekend showing off the boat up and down the Great Lakes... the gig was easy as butter all night.. and to top it all off, I got to stand at the wheel late that night (o.k... early the next morning...) She was still tied down, but I didn't care...

Thanks Stan... I owe ya one for that...

Bluenose
In the town of Lunenburg
down Nova Scotia way,
in 1921 on a windy day,
a sailing ship was born,
the Bluenose was her name.
You'll never see her kind again.

Chorus

Bluenose, the ocean knows her name.
Sailors know how proud a ship was she.
Bluenose, leaning on the wind,
racing every wave on the sea.

There i found it, but if anyone knows the chording it would be appreciated! thanks

Her hull was long and black,
her sails were snowy white;
she looked like a young bird in flight.
And from the very first,
the Bluenose loved to run.
She loved the smell of sea and sun.

Chorus

For twenty-five long years
she ruled the northern sea,
riding like a queen on the tide.
But in the Caribbean, one dark and stormy day,
the Bluenose hit a reef and died.

Chorus (more slowly)

Now just the other day, down Nova Scotia way,
in Lunenburg they christened a ship.
Just like the old Bluenose,
down to the very name.
The Bluenose lives and sails again.

Chorus

Subject: Lyr Add: THE CAPTAIN AND THE QUEEN (Dan McKinnon)
From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca
Date: 13 Aug 01 - 09:17 PM

I've been checking, and haven't been able to locate the information on when the song was written. However! I have gotten some information on two other songs. Stan Rogers' song as well as Dan McKinnon's song.

From: Daniel McKinnon
To: George Seto

Hello George,

I can tell you about two of the songs but the third, Dave Martins, I know nothing about. I don't even think I've heard it.

Michael Stanbury's song the "The Bluenose Song" was written to celebrate the launch of the Bluenose II. I'm not sure but I even think it might have been commissioned by Oland's Brewery, who were the reason behind the Bluenose II being built, (I believe they were looking for a spectacle or a big press opportunity to help launch their new beer, Schooner). So it was written around '61 or '63, whenever the Bluenose II was launched, as well as the beer. ( I actually had the chance to sing it with Michael one evening a few years ago which was a real treat.)

Of Stan Rogers' song, "Bluenose", I will go into the whole story, "from the horses mouth", so to speak. Murray Creed, the originator and producer of CBC's Market Place and Country Canada, was asked to, and did film a large piece on the Bluenose II for a small television documentary. He was in Toronto with a couple of others responsible for the film, and they were in a hotel across the street from the CBC studio talking with John Allan Cameron about writing some music for their documentary on the Bluenose II.

While talking, John Allen mentioned a friend of his was over in the CBC studio at that very moment and might add to the documentary. They said go get him and we'll give a listen. So he went and got Stan, brought him back to the hotel room and he played "Make and Break Harbour" for them. Apparently that was it. They got Stan to write a few songs and when it came down to the recording session for the documentary they asked John Allen if he wouldn't mind if they didn't use him. They loved all Stan's music, and voice. That was somewhere around 1978. Murray Creed told me this after he commissioned me to write "Sea of Change" and "When the Under-run is Done" for another documentary he had filmed.

This is the best I can do George.

Now regarding "The Captain & the Queen", all I can do is send the words off to you. (Plus I do have a small bit of it on an MP3 file on my web site at:

http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/dan.mckinnon/between.html

THE CAPTAIN AND THE QUEEN
(© Dan McKinnon March 1996)

She breathed her last one January evening
She met her fate so far away from home
Shorn of masts she hauled freight for a living
Then struck a reef upon some foreign shore
He heard the news and stood still for a moment
His eyes filled up with tears he couldn't hide
You could hear it in his voice as he tried speaking
They say that night a part of him had died

Chorus
And he could hear the wind howling through her rigging
The Bluenose and her captain running free
He could feel her pride and grace; for glory they would race
To be the best the captain and the queen

They christened her the Bluenose one March morning
She turned her head toward the open sea
A thousand voices cried, "For Victory! For Pride!"
They cheered them on the captain and the queen
Now a season on the Grand Banks set her mettle
Judgement day was swiftly drawing near
Stout hearts were beating fast as the finish line raced past
They beat the best the captain and the queen       Chorus

She worked hard for eighteen seasons on the Grand Banks
From Gloucester's challenge never did they stray
But the days of sail had passed, he stayed with her 'till the last
Then he cast her lines and watched her steam away
Now the captain has a grandson who's a captain
The Bluenose has a daughter who's a queen
Together once again, riding high against the wind
Forever one the captain and the queen       Chorus

Also one other song you might be interested in is one that Tom Gallant wrote about Angus and the Bluenose, although I cannot remember the name just off hand.

Thanks so much George, and all the best.

Dan

Curiously enough, I had just posted the following a few minutes ago to a different thread (Columbia). I hadn't seen this thread or I would have posted it here:

There have been references in this thread to the pride of Canada, the Bluenose. A few years ago a replica of the original Bluenose (said to be an exact replica) was built, also in Lunenberg, Nova Scotia. The Irish Rovers, based in British Columbia, did this song on their recording, "Tall Ships and Salty Dogs." I'm pretty sure (but not positive) that it was written by Will Millar now (alas!) retired, but for many years the leader of the Irish Rovers. It commemorates the building and launching of the NEW Bluenose. A great song, the lyrics go like this:

BLUENOSE
(Will Millar????)

In the town of Lunenberg, down Nova Scotia way,
In 1921 on a windy day,
A sailing ship was born and the Bluenose was her name,
And you'll never see her kind again.

CHO: Bluenose, the ocean knows her name
Sailors know how proud a ship was she-e.
Bluenose, leaning in the wind,
Racing every wave on the sea.

For 25 long years she ruled the northern sea,
Riding like a Queen on the tide.
But in the Caribbean one dark and stormy day,
She ran upon a reef... and died.

CHO:

Now just the other day, down Nova Scotia way,
In Lunenberg they christened a new ship.
Just like the old Bluenose, down to her very name, T
he Bluenose lives and sails again.

CHO: (twice)

Haven't heard anything about her recently, but I think she's still sailing. Cheers!

Footnote: I may be wrong in attributing this song to Will Millar. I had that impression, but no proof or evidence. I'm quite willing to be corrected.

Reiver 2, if you look in the earlier messages, the song was written by Dave Martins and Doug Skillings

Hi There I don't know if somebody is still looking for The Blue nose.
The song was performed by the Houghton Weavers in 1977(Dave Martins 1977 Morning star music). The song is apparently a sea shanty about one of the famous sailing ships on the jamaican rum trade!

The song "Bluenose...In the town of Lunenburg..." was originally recorded by the Fernwood Trio in 1963 on Sparton records #221. The album is entitled "Bluenose". The arrangement that most everybody uses was created by the Fernwood Trio. The original arrangement was basically only three or four chords as I remember.

My music says the words and music are by Micheal Standbury. From the Great Canadian Song Book compiled by Dr. Ed Whitcomb which contains the music score.
