At a recent and rather raucous family gathering, a quieter member of the clan suddenly burst into song - "Roll me over in the clover, Rover" She has no recollection of the song or singing it but I am now in search of the lyrics and sheet music. Sounds like some "naughty" ballad vintage WWII.

At Briarwood Episcopal Conference center on Cape Cod, Massachusetts in the early '70s, we used to sing:

Oh, this is number one, and the fun has just begun,
Roll me over, lay me down, and do it again (boom! boom!)
Roll me over in the clover,
Roll me over lay me down and do it again (boom boom!)
Oh, this is number two, and (insert rhyme here)
Roll me over lay me down and do it again etc.

Does this come close? We were pretty liberal Episcopalian teens!

I've heard the same song done as "Roll me over, Yankee soldier..."

Peter.

"Roll me over in the Clover" gee, one of my sisters TAUGHT that to people at Briarwood one summer in the 60's. Being good Episcopal children *WE* learned it from our parents...From talking with others I have since learned it was popular during WWII, (veterans were the ones who told me) and some of THEM are pretty sure they learned it from WWI vets. don't know how far back it goes.

Another variation is "Put your shoulder next to mine and pump away"

Here are lyrics, and a .wav file and RealAudio file of one verse and chorus. Here's another version of the lyrics. Here's another. And another (this page has other bawdy songs).

Never enough! This version is from "The Erotic Muse" by Ed Cray. Cray said he got it from a former marine who was "an indifferent singer, his tune a sucession of doggedly rhythmic, indeterminate pitches over the compass of a fifth. For all its vagueness, it is clearly a set of the usual tune to which 'Roll Me Over' is sung, and for that reason, the song is classed here rather than under 'Shove It Home/Drive It On'. It remains nonetheless, an obvious cross between the two songs, and may be a milestone on the road from 'Shove It Home' to 'Roll Me Over'."

This is number one, and the fun has just begun
Nelly, put your belly close to mine.
Roll me over in the clover,
Roll me over, lay me down and do it again.

This is number two, and my Nelly wants to screw.
Nelly put....

This is number three, and it's time I had a pee...

This is number four, and I've got her on the floor...

This is number five; the bee is in the hive...

This is number six; the juices begin to mix...

This is number seven; could this really be heaven?..

This is number eight, and I'm still feeling great.

This is number nine; now I'm feeling might fine...

this is number ten; let's start over again.

This is the version I usually sing:
Now this is number one and I'm buttering up her bun...
....this is number two; down in front, I'm coming through!
....this is number three, fancy frigging, fast and free...
....this is number four, and I'm lying on the floor...
....this is number five and I'm feeling fast alive...
....this is number six and I'm learning brand new tricks...
....this is number seven and I'm on my way to heaven...
....this is number eight and I'm standing at the gate...
....this is number nine and I'm feeling mighty fine...
....this is number ten, roll me over and do it again...

Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, Summer, 1963, C Co., 2d Bn., 2d TRB:

The count is up to one and the fun has just begun...
The count is up to two and my hand is on her shoe...
...three and my hand is on her knee...
...four and I'm knocking at the door...
...five and my dick just took a dive...
...six and I'm in a helluva fix...
...seven and I think that I'm in heaven...
...eight and the doctor's at the gate...
...nine and the twins are doing fine...
...ten and I'd like to do it again...

We used to sing it this way at AIESEC meetings back in the ninetees:

This is number one and the fun has just begun...
This is number two and my hands are on her shoe...
...three and my hands are on her knee...
...four and the clothes are on the floor...
...five and the girl is still alive...
...six and she's crazy 'bout my tricks...
...seven and I think that I'm in heaven...
...eight and the girl cries I can't wait...
...nine and I take her from behind...
...ten and I use my fountain pen...
...eleven and she says let's start from seven...
...(any large number ending on "four") and she still cries for more

I never knew it had verses. I guess what I learned may have been a chorus:

Roll me o-ver!

Roll me o-ver!

Roll me over in the clover and do it again!
