I'll be there this Wednesday, the last few months have been very difficult with some family illness ( now pretty well sorted ), and a huge amount of work (at work). I'm seriously considering taking a leaf out of Alan's book so I can have some free time (eh?).

I was sorry to have missed this concert, Matthew. It sounds magical!

'Our Esteemed Leader' certainly gets around and he informs me a CD of the concert will soon be on sale for £5.00 each!

Sorry you can not make Wednesday, Matthew but will see you before Christmas.

Hope everyone else can make it including Alan because I am getting very weary of standing in for him---I find it extremely scary and anyone who runs a folk club has my admiration!

Anyone who enjoys a good cosy atmosphere and songs sung in a 'traditional' style is more than welcome to join us in The Snug at The Railway Hotel, Heatly, Lymm every second and fourth Wednesday in the month. You will be made most welcome by our small but friendly crowd (10 to 12 singers usually).

I managed to catch the aforesaid Lord and Master performing with the Grace Darling Singers at Chadkirk Chapel last Saturday night in a delightful performance of West Gallery singing. The setting of this 14th Century chapel reached on foot at the end of a dark lane in the Goyt valley seemingly miles from anywhere was perfect for these songs. And coming out of the chapel at the end felt just like carollers returning home as described by Thomas Hardy in one of the readings at the concert.

The concert was recorded by Grandpa Bernard for the Grace Darling Singers, so those of you who missed it may get another chance.

Anyway I wanted to add that owing to prior commitments (the staff Xmas bash) I can't come the the Singaround this week, so Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to all the regulars (and irregulars!) in the Snug!

It's good to be able to report that this session now appears to be well established, meeting regularly on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the Snug room at the Railway, Heatley near Lymm. The sessions have been well supported by some very good singers (apart from one or two who have strayed - but I won't mention any names JJ!) and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

There will be no session on the fourth Wednesday of this month (Christmas Eve), so an extra session is being held on Wednesday 17th next week.

In the absence of our Lord and Master, who was otherewise engaged in entertaining the ladies of the WI, last night's session proved gloriously confusing. The landlord "his reckoning forgot" and had booked a crowd of Serious Anoraks - either the Lymm Shares Club or the Chess Club - into the Snug, so that we poor singers were obliged to seek shelter next to the darts board. From there we were rescued by Helen and invited to join the Bollin Morris for an improvised song and dance session. Our heartfelt thanks go to the dancers for their hospitality, and I hope they enjoyed the songs as much as I enjoyed their playing and dancing.

PS Congratulations to Bernard on the birth of his grand-daughter!

Alan, it was such a relief you were back in charge last night and the loud singing was much appreciated :o) John Routledge lies ofcourse --I was appallingly bad and quite 'drunk in charge'!

It was another good night last night. Though Harry and Sara and Nik and Lyn were very much missed.

We would all welcome any singers who sing in a traditional way or anyone who likes to just listen to music and wants to join good company for an evening. It is very light hearted--we take our songs seriously but not ourselves.

We're back again this week, Wednesday 27th.
Sorry I couldn't make the last session, but I heard that Diz made a woderful job of officiating it. Although the last session was a quieter night than usual(possibly because a cetain loud singer was absent) I heard that what it lacked in numbers, it made up for in quality (again possibly because a certain loud singer was absent)

Sara is having a problem with her arthritic knee, so she and Harry couldn't be there.

It is great news the song sessions have been fixed for 2nd and 4th Wednesdays as in speaking to others firm dates increase the chances of them remembering and coming along.

There is now a sufficiently large core of singers that even in the absence of a few regulars a good night can still be had.

You raised a good point John, it's the songs that are important. It's important that we remenber that we go (as Bernard so elequently puts it) to enjoy the beauty of traditional style songs in a setting where they would feel at home. That doesn't mean that there shouldn't be some discussion about the songs or other related topics, such as CFS, but I would hate it to turn into some sort of learned society.

I went to my local club here after missing a couple of weeks and bumped into Gordon Morris of Marrowbones who has recorded quite a few of CFS poems, and he gave me a sampler CD with some of his settings on it.
I haven't made my mind up yet about going to Warwick - I enjoyed it last year.

There are several threads already on Mudcat for Cicely Fox Smith, and her poetry, and the songs which various people have created from them. Danny MacLeod has done a lot of research into her life and work, and he will be giving another presentation at Warwick Festival (the programme is available here:- Warwick Festival) on Saturday 26 July 2003, at 10:30 AM in the Living Tradition Centre.

From what I've seen, Matthew, you need to be worrying more about Liquor Mortis!!!

Seriously (?!), the lack of competitiveness is what is making 'Snog in the Guns' so enjoyable. As Harry said, it isn't intense. We've all been to those sort of gatherings...!!

We aren't looking for prissy perfection, we are enjoying the beauty of traditional-style songs in the type of setting that they were mostly intended for. That's why it's so good!

Although most of the songs are Acker Bilk... erm, Acapulco... errrr... unaccompanied, it isn't exclusively so. However, anyone turning up with a Marshall stack and Fender Strat will find we are a tad hostile...!!

Have just got home from Chorley Festival where the ballad session provoked severe carnage; deaths by drowning, poisoning, wee penknife, etc. with the usual quota of rapes-and-pillages.
Ellen Mitchell sang a ballad about a man who feigned his own death in order to seduce a local maid when she came to his wake (NB this is not a recommended technique!) although it does provoke some discussion about which body parts are affected by rigor mortis!

It is indeed a turning into a wonderful night--so relaxed and friendly. It matters not one iota whether anyone forgets a verse/tune--or to 'wibble and warble' in the right places. We also love you causing 'unseemly larfter' so we will not hold you to that promise!!!

Nik n Lyn should be back this next week , so even more lovely music to listen too--long may we continue.

Maybe we can also persuade a few others who love the music to come along as well? Matthew seems to think it is worth the journey and Harry and Sara too!
