So it turns out the reason our Chicago radio guy wasn't telling us about line changes was that until the last few games, we didn't actually HAVE discernible lines. :~) Poor guy wouldda been calling personnel changes every 20 seconds while the Hawks played with their chemistry set. :~)

NOW we have a couple of lines and we know which one works offensively and which one should do well but doesn't and thus becomes the PKers.

And we won 3-1 tonight, amazing-- it took Mr. Magoo officiating, though, for it to happen! (I'm making him our personal mascot.)

I guess the Hawks are on some kind of roll-- 4-2 the last 6 games??? I dunno, we can usually only get them via radio and we are enjoying the Pens on TV so much we don't always tune in on the radio. Also I just discovered today that the NHL site doesn't list all the radio-only games-- just the TV-somewhere games, so we missed a lot by not double checking the Hawks' site for scheduling. Oh well-- the radio games are archived till the next afternoon, so we can still get Pens eye candy and Hawks ear candy!

~Susan

PS, the REAL good news isn't the Hawks' win... it's that NA beer is only 58 calories a can AND it's GOOD for me!!!!!!!

I saw the game last night on the tube. The Canadiens (please note the spelling with the E) definitely kicked the butt out of the Leafs in the first period. Belfour DID play a great game (won the 1st star of the game award), but got really really lucky three times: he came out to play the puck or to challenge the shooter, and left the net completely open for a shot. Somehow, none of the Canadien players managed to pot the puck in those situations. He would have went from hero to zero mighty quickly!

Okay, Joke of the Day...

Didja hear? The Montreal coaches will only be dressing six players for their next game!!

(the rest of the team have learned to dress themselves....)

GO LEAFS!!

Brian

Yeah Steve, the Toronto-centric announcers were falling over their hyperboles praising the great Eddie. To my mind someone who allows 8 goals in his last 2 games is a little less stellar than he was being built up to be.

I haven't posted much cuz I don't have much to say about the Canucks except that they are a mature bunch of guys who are patient and just waiting for Cloutier to get back in the game. They are not at their best but they are not down. They have great potential and when the youngsters get all pooped out, you'll see the Canucks power through to the top. They're in for the long haul.

Hey Beer,

Wings 3 Wild 1. Legace is back and looking good. That's 9 straight for him. The Wings defense was monsterous tonight, only gave up 17 shots. Yserman is getting in better shape every game and it shows. I agree with you about the scheduling. Not only do the Wings not get much play with original 6 teams , but being a Western Conference team that is in the Eastern time zone makes their travel schedule the toughest in the NHL. The game tonight was not as close as the score. Minnesota got a freak goal in the 3rd, and Manny Fernandez stood on his head all night. THe Wings smothered them with tight checking. It was cool!

How about them Flyers?!?!?!?! After a 1-2 start they have gone 9-1-1. They are on a 5 game (8 home game) streak right now. Forsberg has been amazing, he knows where Gagne is every minute of the game it seems. Forsberg....Gagne....SCORE!!!!   Pretty familiar phrase around here!!

It seems that the schedule was drawn up to try and get local rivalries established to increase fan interest. Unfortunately this will preclude some match-ups that fans would like to see.

From wikipedia "Logo design: a C with an H in the centre (for Club de Hockey Canadien)"

Habs is a contraction of habitants which is really a synonym for Canadiens - this is how Quebecers referred to themselves before the movement for separation took hold in Quebec.

I agree Susan it was a great game. Enjoyed hearing the Canadians loose. Don't get me wrong the canadians have a great team and their record is showing it. However, when your a Detroit fan you don't get much respect in Quebec.
Bobad!
Ottawa is having a great start as well. Wouldn't you like to see Detroit come in and have a go??   First place teams play one another. But no it won't happen.

Naw, it's cuz they the HABS, "Les Habitants" as I learned from Googling, after the name given to or taken by the first settlers of the area... I guess it roughly equates to "The People" as so many human tribes call themselves.

But when I just stopped by at the Habs' site-- they mistakenly had themselves down as the game winner for tonight, hahahahahaaaaaaah!

Among the local Anglo population the "CH" is jokingly referred to as "Center Hice" which is having fun with the French Canadian accent.

It really stands for Canadiens Hockey.

Now I'm a little slow and realize it, but I was just checking the Detroit schedual and I see that the wings don't play Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and probably other teams this season. Excuse me, but that's the shits. Not play Toronto, only 2 hours away. Well this really pisses me off. Original 6 don't have any rights. I'm about ready to pack it in. I was looking forward to Detroit coming to Montreal for a game. I guess it is East plays East and West plays West. I don't like it...........Period

Just watched the Ottawa - Boston game. Ottawa was not on their game tonight, played rather raggedly and not their usual crisp passing game but yet defeated Boston 5 - 2. This team is scary good in the retailored game which is ideally suited to their strengths, they are making it look too easy.

Bardford -- if the other fella in your band is okay with the positioning move, why not?

My duo often finds itself competing with the screen(s) when a hockey game is on. Mind you, it doesn't bother me a helluvalot since I get to catch glimpses of my woeful Maple Leafs on occasion. A lot of it is how the bar is seen by the patrons -- is it a pub? a place to go for music? a spot to watch sports? a starting off point for another place (usually larger with pricier beverages)? Sometimes the bar is willing to turn off the TV's, sometimes not, so we go with what we can....

Every time I see this thread I think it says "Hockney's back", Hockney being the character played by Kevin Pollak in "The Usual Suspects". Then I wonder how he came back since everybody except Verbal Kint/Kaiser Sozé was killed at the end of the movie. Then I realize that it's about "hockey", not "Hockney" and wonder why anyone cares.

Here's a question... what beer is everyone drinking whike they watch/hear the games? We've just polished off the O'Doul's (NA) and some leftover Getaway beer-- Warthog, Troegerator, Black & Tan, Sam Adams.... we're down to the Pabst NA but it will do in a pinch!

We find we're eating a lot more barbecue and pizza in front of the TV now as well..... for you radio listeners, how are you set up (where do you listen, etc.)?

After surveying the general quality of play this year among a number of teams I used to follow (and new teams started since then), we've decided on what we hope is a rational viewpoint about enjoying the Blackhawks games this year.

Their chances of having a "good" year (score/stat-wise) are nil! But we know they are in a rebuilding mode. This is our only source of positive regard for them, so we are grabbing it with both hands.

Therefore, what we hope to see this year from them is that their opponents have to work harder and smarter as the year unfolds, to beat them-- as we are sure they WILL beat the Hawks! As I posted before, we want to see good play-- we want to see organized position-playing and less mad, unproductive scrambling. We want to see this reflected, if not in the Hawks' OWN play, in the play of their opponents.

This year, we may not see it in the Hawk's play itself. We may not be quick enough to discern the small gains their improvement will require. But if they are improving, what we WILL see is more incisive performance from their opponents-- more exciting games, whatever the final score may be.

So our "bragging rights" will have more to do with losing like PROFESSIONALS than with winning! (Not their sportsmanship, their PLAY.)

We want to see the Hawks make the other teams EARN the wins.

And hey, where's the new fan list-- am I the only girl in this little Mudcat Hockey League?!?!?! (MHL)

In the hockey meets music department - played a hotel pub gig Saturday night. TV's on - CFL football (BC/Saskatchewan) on the big screen near us; Flames/Canucks on HNIC (Hockey Night in Canada)on the small TV over there in the corner.

Pub attendees innattentive to the musical ministrations.

Question - in this environment, is it okay for me to ask the guitar player/lead singer/band leader dude (Rider's fan) to trade places so I can be closer to the hockey game? Bear in mind this is in Calgary. Nationally televised non-Leaf game, a rarity.

The Canucks must have been staying at the hotel we were playing in, as the bus unloaded them in front. Players traipsed off (sullen, deflated, dejected, morose) to a restaurant, and then coaching staff - Marc Crawford, Stan Smyl, others - came into the bar and had a few pops and enjoyed some fine folk music.

I didn't ask for autographs, nor did they.

Who was the Newfoundlander? Yes, Stevie Y still has a few good games left, I believe. He's playing on a line with Maltby and Draper and looks pretty good too. He's always been a very unselfish player and now compliments the younger players with some great passing and critical face offs.

Their still playing great and I keep waiting for Yzerman to have a big noght. I guess he isn't having as much ice time anymore. Chicago has moved from the wonderful old Chicago Stadium.... when I wake up I'll remember the new place, I think it's the United Center. The Hawks' website has sound clips of the old joint online, because oe of the most remarkable things about being at the Stadium was the NOISE you felt right through your wooden-slatted seat. (And because they can't put the smell online.)

"The English voice of hockey in Montreal was Danny Gallivan, he of the cannonading shot and scintillating save.

The French language announcer was Rene Lecavallier."

I can recall some evenings when the game was carried only in French on television and so we'd turn off the TV sound and put on the radio. Some of those times were magical to me. Got to stay up late and sleep on my grandparent's couch, struggling to see the end of the game. Don't recall ever making it to that point, but it was fun to try.

Remember www.nhl.com/hockeyu/halloffame/kharlamov110305.html">Valeri Kharlamov?

Susan, Here is what Tony O had to say.

One Canadian player's utter belief in himself not only paved the way for his own induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame, it left him fearless in the face of the Soviets. Goalie Tony Esposito felt he had Kharlamov's number.

"He didn't have a hard enough shot to blow it by me," Esposito said. "If he can't blow it by me, I have the advantage. Alexandr Yakushev had the shot. Mikhailov made things happen and Kharlamov was the speed on the outside. But he could charge inside, too. Mikhailov set him up with great passes and Petrov was an excellent player too. I was a reflex goalie with good lateral movement and that was the best style against them. They never shot until they were within 10 feet of the goal. Kharlamov was dangerous, no doubt about it."

BTW big brother Phil had his finest moment during that series after the game in Vancouver.
