Thank you, Peg.

Actually, thank you, everyone!!

Also thanks for the great info on local folk music. I'm sure that I'll check it out. Hopefully I can get a couple other people on the project to experience the joy of folk music.

Thanks again.

Zipster, being relatively new to both of the sessions I've mentioned above I can honestly say that they have been very welcoming. Both pubs have enough other punters that lurking wouldn't be a problem. The session in the Tass even has its own website www.thetass.net. If you look under the 'visitors' section there's even a rather gruesome picture of me!

Enjoy your stay but most of us poor buggers have heard of Jesus already. If you stay in Edinburgh look out for John Knox's house on the High street - He worked with Calvin at one time. I believe that he had some sort of religious beliefs too (involved in something called the reformation).

Make sure to go to the Hebrides Bar for good music.

Rebecca, you seem to be coming with the right attitude, even if the name of the group you're coming with has put many of us on our guard. Hope you have a wonderful time, and possibly I'll see you at a a session or two. At the moment I'm usually to be found in the Tass at the singing session on a Tuesday evening and in the Antiquary in Stockbridge for the Thursday night music session.

GUEST,Em, as I said before, I'm taking a fairly phylosophical approach to the missionary part of the trip. I'm just really excited to be going.

Scott, I agree with you whole-heartedly as to which is the best country in the world. It's just such a shame for me that my ancestors immigrated. If I could move back I would in a heartbeat.

Thank you, Edmund!

Scott, I'm not going to be forcing anybody to do anything.

Chanteyranger, thanks for the info.

Peg, while the goal of the trip is to bring people to Christ, we will not be doing it in a forceful way. Heck, we may fail entirely and not change anyone's mind. Even if that happens, I'm sure that I'll still have a wonderful time. In a way this is a private spriritual quest for me because I am visiting the land of my ancestors for the first time in my life. If I leave this summer without some change in myself or my mindset then I will be more disappointed then if I don't convent anyone.

CET: Rebecca announced she was going to Scotland with a group to help convert people to Christianity. I agree with Scott that that is a WEE bit different from someone like me (a pagan) going to Scotland to celebrate a pagan festival...hardly the same purpose at all. I would not go to Scotland to celebrate Samhain with the intention of converting people to my belief system; in fact I would probably not tell any strangers of my purpose unless they specifically asked. To go on such a trip with a group organized for the exact purpose of bringing more believers into the bosom of Christ is not the same as a personal journey for private spiritual reasons.

I agree she did not try to proselytize in her messages here and I don't see anyone calling her to task for doing so...I do see people who seem doubtful that her group's "mission" will be successful and quite a few people who seem offended at the idea of such a "crusade" but this seems to be based on general principles (i.e. opposition to proselytizing and witnessing) and not an attack on Rebecca herself, who seems a very nice person! For those of us who have seen the rabid rise of fundamentalist Christianity in this country and the attempts of some communitities to violate the separation of church and state, well, such announcements, however innocent, may remind us of other similar occurrences in our midst. Still each person should be considered for thier own individual intentions.

I've heard it all a million times before --"arrogant Germans"---"bragging Yanks", etc., etc.. Well, I can honestly say that I've been around a wee bit in my years of wandering, and I have found no particular tendency to arrogance or boastfulness in any nationality. And I have some very dear friends of varied colour and nationality. An arrogant German, or Yank, or Finn, or Kenyan----fazes me but little. It's when I run into an arrogant, boastful SCOT [and they , too, exist], that I really feel anger, hurt and disgust.

Thanks for the Sleepytoon info, Shonagh and LJC. And I'm very impressed Shonagh that you got into it enough to check out the location. I guess the Auld Country is full of song locations--one could certainly spend a whole vacation visiting them

Think I'll put the song back on the set list.

W-O

PS If you ever see Cilla Fisher sing Sleepytoon, she emphasizes the rude part at the end by pausing at the end of the line "to wipe his snottery nose" and dragging her arm across her nose with appropriate sound effects...sort of Music Hall Crude. (At least she did it in Ottawa)

sing airy airy airy-ahdi airy airity noo.

Edmund, somebody coming across on a Christian Crusade is a wee bit different to somebody coming to celebrate a religious festival. Having seen various Christian groups (can't say for sure if the Campus Crusade group were one of them) out on Princes Street trying to convert people I very much doubt if the people of Edinburgh will have the choice of not hearing the Christian message.

When I read Celtic Bard's first message I thought it would bring the bigots out of the woodwork and I was right. All she did was express her delight in going to Scotland and mention why she was going. She didn't proselytize. She didn't even begin a discussion about religion. None of you are going to be forced to attend her meetings, nor will anybody in Edinburgh. For this she deserves the kind of snide, self-righteous attitude that I've seen from a few people in this thread? Why can't she be shown the respect that Peg would no doubt expect if she happened to mention that she was going to Britain to celebrate Samhain?

However, that being said, the welcoming voices dominated. I'm looking forward to my own trip to Scotland.

Edmund

Why do the Scots hate Americans? Perhaps cause you all think you live in the best country in the world while we KNOW we do:-)

Seriously, I think it does have a lot to do with the loud and arrogant behaviour that seems all too typical of American tourists. The Scots on the whole are a more demure bunch, so it is a clash of personalities/cultures. Americans who adopt a more subdued attitude tend to get on fine and be well liked.

Ever been to Ireland? They love Americans over there, especially in Limerick. If I could find work in Limerick I'd move there. Best European country by far for Americans to live. What were we talking about again??? Oh yeah --- Scotland. Don't go girl. At least, not with the idea of reforming or saving anyone. Scotland is a lovely country and they don't need Americans coming to their rescue in the form of religion.

I'm an American living in London for 12 years now. I've been to Edinburgh twice and have fallen in love with the city. However, I have found that on the tours of the city the Scot guides did not like Americans very much, they seemed to take great pride in making snide remarks about Americans. The second trip - I kept my mouth shut so they didn't know I was American and got on much better. I am not assuming though that this attitude is indicative of all Scots - just the tour guides.

It should have been pointed out tae the auld frump that while it maybe wasn't QUITE the best thing, like many another good thing, the Scots invented the Tarmac! Even came up with Dunlop rubber tyres to smooth the travellers bumps on the rough English roads----:-)!!

The Pagan Federation hold their Scottish conference at Edinburgh University, so it isn't a spiritually bereft campus. I do think you'll also find it is well enough served with Christian societies as well.

Rebecca, don't let them scare you off! I've been going to Scotland for the last fifteen years. At least three times I travelled straight into a heat wave, and I can only think of one holiday (in September) that was thoroughly spoilt by persistent rain. Also, in my experience, as a whole the Scots are a tolerant, easygoing bunch of people, going out of their way to be friendly to strangers even if they don't agree with their views. Hope you'll get the money together and thoroughly enjoy your stay! I'd try to meet you but I'm going for the second half of April (hope the blizzard season is over by then!).

Summer Term ends on 21st June at Edinburgh University. In the last four weeks of term I'd expect that a lot of the students will be busy doing exams, and then they'll be off home.

As for a lack of [christian] activity, I suspect that the Catholic Students' Union, the Christian Union and the Student Christian Movement would take a different view ;-)

Try to get along to a few of the dances that go on. The University society "New Scotland Country Dance" do a social dance every Thursday evening, but there'll be plenty of other dances going on in Edinburgh.

Have a good time. I was in Edinburgh for a couple of years and it was great.

Sorry, but I agree; that snippet from your group's literature does indeed make it sound like you have your work cut out for you and the ultimate goal is to start "a thriving Crusade ministry" so it does sound like you will do what needs to be done to make that happen; that is a lot different than "talking to people and seeing what's going on." Just offering my interpretation of that quotation. If what you want is to "best serve the campus" perhaps the best way is to allow people to find their own path to Spiritual fulfillment...? Just a thought.

I like being a witch; we have no need to proselytize and are still the fastest-growing religion in the United States! ;)

Seriously, Rebecca, I hope you enjoy your trip. Maybe the old gods of the Scottish landscape will speak to you, once you arrive. Do be sure to rent a copy of "The Wicker Man" and watch it before you go...

Peg

Jim, I know that drinking is a big part of a pub but that's not the only part.

Mickey191, "Local Hero" is one of my dad's favorite movies and I've seen several times over. It's a great flick.

O'Transo, we'll be in Edinburgh. Personally my family (Fearn) is a subclan of Ross and we're from the north-eastern part of the country, above Inverness. Yes, this will be my first trip to Europe. Actually it'll be my first trip off the North American continent. I've only been out of the US once when I went to Canada on a family vacation. I'm definately hoping to be able to do some exploring on my own.

As for the "Christian" aspect of the trip here is our goal quoted directly from the introduction letter sent to me by the project director. "This influential campus (University of Edinburgh) of over 50,000 students has very little happening on it in a Christian sense. Our work will be pioneering and our summer will be spent learning and observing what the Lord is doing on the campus. We will be interacting with the students on campus and in the city -- learning from them on how best to serve the campus and to ultimately start a thriving Crusade ministry." So as you see, we are going with the main goal of interacting with people and seeing what's going on. We will no be standing on street corners lambasting everybody as sinners. We also won't be involved in ministery all the time. The team is going to do some fun stuff too.

There. Does that clear some things up?

I went there once with my dad to see the bothy that the lads would have slept in. unfortunately no one was at home at the farm but my dad gave them a phone and im going up soon. Just walking around about the the place felt eerie. Like standing on the same land that the guy who wrote the song would have stood on! "Takin the mickey" is making mock of, or making a fool of, either to a person's face or without their knowledge.

It's a UK-wide expression not just Scottish, and is sometimes abbreviated to "taking the mick", or even "extracting the Michael..."

Sleepytoon is a real place? I used to do that song sometimes. Where is it? Is it actually called that?

That's a great song, especially the rude ending taking the mickey out of the cruel farmer. I used to bug my sheep farmer neighbour by singing it. But he's a mate and anywise, he gets even with me by slaughterin' "Lads o the Fair" in the totally wrong key, wrong tune and with his own lyric adaptation. He knows I hate that.

Hi Bard, If it's your first trip to europe then Scotland will just blow you away...especially if you have some free time to explore on your own.Do you know where you are going to be based yet,or where your family came from? I had to laugh at the posts from GUESTjim, because they really do reflect the attitude you are likely to encounter over there... but i'm pleased to see that you seem to have a philosophical attitude to the 'christian' aspect of the journey. If i had one chance to visit Scotland i would go to the NW coast(ardnamurchan, glenuig, arisaig, eigg, plockton and so on up to about ullapool)...and i say that after living and travelling in Scotland for 30-odd years of my life. Good luck with the finals!

Proselytizing is not illegal in Scotland providing it is done by consenting adults, and not on a Sunday.

Cue for a song--"As I gaed in by Huntly Toon, ae mornin' for tae fee, I fell in wi' Bogie o' Cairnie, and wi' him did agree-----". Right bang in the middle of the bothy ballad country! Go to Scotland, Rebecca; the hearts are a lot warmer than the weather.Dinnae try to convert anybody, mind---just show agood example. If you arrive in a pub where songs are the "go"---take my word for it--there's no more popular song than "The Old Rugged Cross"!! Er---good luck with the weather, and use the Youth Hostels or a friend's house when you can---your costs will be affected quite dramatically... Boab

Just had a thought-see if you can rent the movie"Local Hero." Burt Lancaster & Peter Rieger. An American business man goes to Scotland to close a deal. The locals teach HIM a few things. Utterly delightful and the scenery is a knockout.
