Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: ToulouseCruise Date: 24 Oct 05 - 11:44 AM To clarify a wee bit... The change in what is now happening in front of the net is not due to a specific rule change, but the new enforcement of the old rule of obstruction/interference. In hockey, you are allowed to physically contact the puck carrier (aka "checking), but not players without the puck. In the past few years, players in open ice were being manhandled even though they did not have the puck, to slow down their process into the offensive zone, or to tie them up completely to avoid them receiving a pass. The new enforcement eliminates this "thuggery" as some are wont to call it. As a side note, it has definitely changed the play in front of the goalie. In the past, the team on offence would have a player or two parked in front at his own risk, as he was constantly being slashed at and cross checked by the defencemen there, or at least tied up with him. Now, it is almost a complete hands-off rule, which makes the defensemen's job description the one needing the most change in the game. You will see young, mobile defensemen (think Ed Jovanovski from Vancouver) being must more effective than the old-style guard (think Scott Stevens of the Devils in his heyday). Me... I love it :-) Brian |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 24 Oct 05 - 09:50 AM I don't think there is a rule change Beer. I think that they have decided to actually enforce the Cross checking and interference rules which have always existed. If you call interference (of the goalie) on the forward parked in front of the net then it kind of evens out. In youth hockey where I grew up it was like that. Please note that the rule changes are designed to make the game more exciting and that the change in the two line pass rule can make that guy parked in front of the opposing net, flatfooted, dead weight if the defenseman gets to the puck first. I think in the long run it will make the game better. Once the coaches start building their teams around the new rules. They will really showcase the skilled goalies and the great skaters and smart players. Look for kids like Jason Spezza and Sidney Crosby to really shine. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Beer Date: 23 Oct 05 - 10:22 PM I haven't read the rule but what I'm told is that the the defenceman is not permitted contact with the player who parks himself in front of the net waiting for a pass. If that is the rule. Or something close to it, then I'm against this rule change. I'm still with you on the goon thing. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: bobad Date: 23 Oct 05 - 10:07 PM Well I'm not sure Beer, I think that, just as in basketball, the defender must employ a strategy of gaining positional advantage. This requires skills such as foot speed and anticipation and out-thinking your opponent, kind of like a chess match. I'd much rather watch this than the goonery which we've been exposed to since the mid sixties. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Beer Date: 23 Oct 05 - 09:54 PM I agree with you 100%. They had to do something to clean it up. But Bobad! Have you watched a game yet? It's not that I'm against it. It is how will the defenceman adjust their game to it. And don't tell me that in the old days a rover in front of the net was there for very long. It was just as rough back then as it is now. The only difference was that in the old 6 team league, the players dropped their sticks and gloves. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: bobad Date: 23 Oct 05 - 09:42 PM What did they do back in the old days before the cross checking and general mugging that had been taking place prior to the rule changes this year? |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Beer Date: 23 Oct 05 - 09:33 PM Have to admit it. Watched my first hockey game last night. I don't know about this don't touch rule in front of the net! That's like writing a new job description for the defenceman. What's he gonna do now? Will certainly increase the goals while the stands there with his finger up his ass. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Peace Date: 20 Oct 05 - 07:05 PM Tell me about it. Just TELL me. However, no matter how much I moan and groan about the Oilers, they will always have a place in my heart. About seven years ago one of my students had to go in for the removal of a BIG brain tumor. The operation was slated for six weeks in the future. She loved hockey (played it, too)--as did her dad, mom and brother. I called the Oilers and they arranged for great seats for the family and my student got to attend the pre-game practice, received an autographed shirt signed by the entire team, game puck, pictures of her and various players and she came back to school having loved the whole trip. The only thing the Oilers asked was that the family get themselves there. They were treated like VIPs by the Oilers management folks and it's a memory that student still has. Sooooo, moan as I do about them GO, OILERS, GO! |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Peace Date: 20 Oct 05 - 12:06 AM Saw a tied hockey game between the Habs and ?. Cournoyer skated as only he could to get his stick on an iced puck. He did. Stopped the clock with three seconds left. Back to the other end. Habs won the faceoff and scored with no time left on the clock. The light beat the siren by a millisecond. What a finish. It happens. However, Edmonton couldn't have won last night if they had the whole damned horse up their arse. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: wysiwyg Date: 19 Oct 05 - 06:36 PM Is it just Chicago fans, where the refrain is always, "OK, we can still win this one if we ----"? Cuz that IS a mindset required of all Chicago sports' fans, players, coaches, and commentators. I originally thought it was just Bears fans ("There are 4 seconds left on the clock. If we throw a pass and then immediately run a play and get a safety AND a flag of some sort thrown-- we can still win this one!").... It seems to carry over to the other sports-- is that just a sports thing, true in every sport everywhere? ~S~ |

If ya saw the game last night--I watched the third period--I think the Oilers deserved the loss. They spent their time fumbling passes instead of shooting, and the Coyotes dug for the puck. Stupid penalty they took. I left before the shootout because the writing was on the wall. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: wysiwyg Date: 16 Oct 05 - 05:17 PM About radio archives-- going to the NHL Radio Link shows only the "current" games, so when they upload the next day's game menu, you lose access to the older games in the archive. This happened about midafternoon today-- I used the link posted here, to see if the game was still available, hoping Hardi would be able to hear the game with me when he got home from church. The old game was gone, and the next set of games was up instead. But on my desktop, I had bookmarked the page when I was on it, and when I went to the bookmark just now to review the game menu in hopes of finding one we'd enjoy-- it was the old games page, and the archive of the old game is still "live"! ~S~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Beer Date: 16 Oct 05 - 11:30 AM Steve, You are right on when you speak about Beliveau. I met the man about 20 years ago at a winter carnival that I had organized for patients at a psyc. hospital. What a gentleman with the public. As you get older I beleive that you get to enjoy the skills of the great players no matter which team they play for. I also noticed that when my team loses it doesn't hurt as much as it use to. I guess that is another sign of getting old. How can one not enjoy the skills of the gifted athlete. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Peace Date: 16 Oct 05 - 09:26 AM Montreal was my home town. Beer, as someone who grew up in Toronto I could be lynched for saying this, but Beliveau is one of my all time favourite players. He was a treat to watch on the ice and the emboddiement of how a professional athlete should comport themselves off the ice. How about Brett Hull announcing his retirement today? |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Beer Date: 15 Oct 05 - 08:22 PM Grew up in Nova Scotia listening in the late sixties to the Red Wings on 760 WJR a.m radio Detroit. Yes, all that distance. Always seemed to fade out just about the last two minutes of the game. Moved to St. Thomas Ontario and again listened to WJR. For the past 30 years have been listening to WJR hockey from the Montreal area. Went to Newfoundland 8 years ago and low and behold I listened to the Red Wing as I drove through Gross Moore National Park. Then a few years ago.Puff they were gone. WJR didn't carry them any more. So now with this mulimedia stuff I'm with WYSIWYG. Only hope your wrong and it remains free for some time to come. |
