Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Mark Cohen Date: 12 Oct 05 - 02:13 AM OK, Pseudolus, I'm with you. As I said, I was a Flyers fan in '74, '75, and '76, when it was all over after the fat lady sang. I don't know if I'm going to have time to watch any games this season, but I'll let you watch for me. I did grow up in Philly, after all. I even voted against Frank Rizzo. Oh, and gnu, you'd better watch how you spell M. Cournoyer's first name, or you could end up sporting a puck in some anatomically inappropriate location. Yvonne is the feminine form of Yvon. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: catspaw49 Date: 11 Oct 05 - 07:32 PM Here I am supposed to be all hot to trot about hockey because some incredible assholes in local government believed that the largest college football town in the United States with some of the most rabid fans and additionally located within 300 miles of almost HALF of the NFL teams could and would support an NHL team. We had failed miserably at supporting ANY pro franchise including previous minor league hockey teams and the only game in town was Clippers baseball or located inside the Horseshoe at Ohio State. So these mamaluccas name this new and wonderful team after an obscure Indian Chief in Ohio's history, a man I doubt ever played hockey, and then come up with a hideous mascot and emblem based on the name but unrelated in any way to the history they wanted to carry forth.........go figure. They have achieved their only notoriety as a team that caused a rules modification by killing some poor kid who had actually wanted to attend a Blue Jackets game for her birthday. So sign me up for a Columbus Blue Jackets fan. I'm hoping to get a job licking the icing off the puck after every Icing call. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Mooh Date: 07 Oct 05 - 08:22 AM I agree with the obstruction calls, the centre line thing, and the goalie pad reduction, but I stand by my stated opinion on OT and shoot-outs. The clutch and grab aspects of the NHL for many years slowed the game to a crawl, increased thuggery, and frustrated refs who couldn't call a fair game. I prefer international ice sizes too, and the NHL missed its chance to institute the larger ice during the year off. In some arenas it would cost too many seats and too much engineering, or so some say. My thinking is a larger ice surface would open the game up a bit, especially with today's seemingly huge players, and reduce the anti-positional crowding along the boards. Another thought...it's been a long time since I've seen a good clean hip check like we used to see in the lighter padding days. Is there a connection? Peace, Mooh. |

From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 07 Oct 05 - 08:01 AM They can change the rules till they're blue in the face, those gorillas will still ignore them and go on scrapping like big girls in a schoolyard. Jack, can't agree with you about Hockey vs. Cricket, but you're right about Rugby - Union's the Prince of Sports, and League's the King. Now those are REAL men - no armour, crash helmets and silly sticks to hit one another with, just bone, muscle and sinew and, for big guys, amazing fitness and stamina. S:0) |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Steve Latimer Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:38 PM Gnu, "McInnis comes close to LeMaire... but, I've never seen him put a goalie on his ass with a puck to the chest from four feet inside his own blue line like Jacques did to Cheevers" As a former goalie I have to say compare the chest pad that today's goalies wear to the ones that Gerry wore. A bazooka wouldn't put any goalie on his ass with today's equipment. I'm looking forward to a lot of the rule changes. I hope that they continue to call all of the obstruction. By the way, this is not revolutionary, it is just calling penalties the way they used to be called. It, and the elimination of two line offsides should make for a much better game. Let the Crosby's etc. dance and work their magic. In the past they would have been nullified by a hook, a hold or interference. This is the Leaf's year. See you in the Spring on Bay St. (However, I've been saying that since '68). |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: gnu Date: 06 Oct 05 - 08:31 PM Les Canadiens? Nope. They are Yanks now. Leafs. Flames. Oilers. Canucks. Senators. AND, Yvonne could skate fuckin circles around Hull, Orr AND WAYNE, all put together and his wrist shot will never be matched. Yeah, McInnis comes close to LeMaire... but, I've never seen him put a goalie on his ass with a puck to the chest from four feet inside his own blue line like Jacques did to Cheevers... and he scored. Anyway... it's all relative. And my relativity don't start until May. Go Patriots!! |

And I agree with everything said about the Leafs. They take up far too much CBC space for my liking. I think it is a centrist Canadian Bay Street plot to distract us westerners from... uh... Also - music content - Darren McCarty of the Flames fronts a band called Grinder. Rock on, Flames! |

I prefer watching baseball to most other activities, but hockey certainly is a great way to pass the winter months. Of course, I lose all interest in hockey when the temperature is nearing 80 degrees and the endless playoffs are still going on. Still, from October to around March it is a great pastime. Glad they are back!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 06 Oct 05 - 03:35 PM Hmmm, much to talk about. 1. Leaf fans have elevated crying in their beer to a high art. ;) This is no exception. If you take the trouble to dry your eyes and look at the standings, you will see that the Leafs have one point the Senators have two. (How many for the Flyers, Frank?) Yes! The Leafs got credit for the tie!!! I'm sure their sisters are profoundly grateful. 2. I'm enjoying this thread so I'm going to prolong it with pointless gloating. Pseudolus.. How 'bout them Flyers? :) 3. Johnny I've played Cricket, I've played hockey. As a sport compared to Hockey, Cricket is lawn bowling with a stick. Now RUGBY is a SPORT!! 4. I was a Leaf fan for 13 years, while they were owned by Harold Ballard. In the early 70's, after he gave away future Norris Trophy winner Randy Carlyle for NOTHING, to reduce the payroll. I decide that if the owner wasn't going to support the team, I wouldn't either. I switched to the team that put them out of the playoffs, The NY Islanders. The current ownership does support the team but The Sens start their team the year after I Moved to Ottawa. I've watched them grow from worst to first. I'm waiting for a cup. 5. Cournoyer was a decent straight ahead skater but Orr and Hull were better. Lemaire had a decent shot but McInnis' is better and he's a maritimer to boot. Beliveau was smooth but Mario is smoother and as classy and Gretzky, well Gretzky is Gretzky. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: gnu Date: 06 Oct 05 - 01:51 PM I grew up listening to announcers trying to pronounce Cournoyer before he skated past everyone and scored with the best wrist shot ever. As for slap shot, don't give me that Hull or Orr crap... LeMaire could outgun both of them put together. And Jean Belliveau could put the puck in off the face off, tell you to fuck off and still be a gentleman. And... oh, oh... I had better stop - I am getting the urge to watch hockey. So... if I had to pick a team, I guess it would have to be Tronna. |
