Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 06 Oct 05 - 01:19 PM Re. the Leafs v Leaves thing ... it's kosher. I had my doubts but the proper plural is 'Leafs' otherwise they'd be in the fall they'd be Hogtown organic detritus ... hey ... wait a minute ... ;o) Also, the plural of 'mouse' (as in computer waggly-thing) is correctly 'mouses'. And yes, I did once get hit in the head by a puck ... who hasn't been? |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: ToulouseCruise Date: 06 Oct 05 - 12:45 PM Okay, I will admit it... GO LEAFS! I loved the game on last night, except for the final score. The "new" NHL will be a game of the players, not a game of coaching tactics (see: Neutral Zone Trap). Not crazy about the shootout, it almost seems anti-climatic after all of the excitement of the dying minutes, and then the OT (as seen in the Leafs-Sens game last night). As for Sid the Kid, I have seen him play in the junior ranks over the last couple of years.. he'z got skillz. Too much hype? Maybe. Is he what the game needs now? Yep - young, photogenic, excellent with the media, mature, and skilled. The new ambassador for the game. Oh, and I loved that every team played last night. I think they should do that every season! Brian |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 06 Oct 05 - 12:44 PM Hey, Pseudolus ... how come I didn't get the Canucks the pool? Scared, eh? |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:49 AM Well OK then, cricket's a game where players hit a ball with a heavy bat and guess what, they don't feel it necessary to punch away at each other like big girls' blouses every thirty seconds. Its called sport. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 06 Oct 05 - 11:46 AM Isn't the plural of 'leaf' leaves? Made me split my sides when I saw 'Maple Leafs' all over the place in Toronto recently. What do they teach in Canadian schools? ROFL And if you have to ask what cricket is, you probably haven't the intellect to understand it. LOL |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Beer Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:53 AM Couldn't agree with you more. I'm really disappointed with this change. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Mooh Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:44 AM The Leafs lost because of the one biggest mistake in the history of hockey, the shootout. It completely disregards the TEAM efforts of the previous 3 periods and OT, and reduces the "game" to 2 players per side at a time. It's unfair, anticlimatic, assistless scoring. It ignores the team sport concept that one extrememly dominant player can be handicapped by his own team, or matched by multiple players on the opposing side. I'd rather see my own beloved Leafs go down to defeat the old way than win by shootout. Last night's game should have been a tie at the end of three periods. The only other reasonable solution is a no tie league where sudden death limitless OT decides the game. Otherwise I'm happy hockey is back. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Beer Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:39 AM Oh! Anyone hear how the Red Wing did?????????? HE! he! |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Beer Date: 06 Oct 05 - 10:37 AM Well lets start the ribbing. Pseudolus, it would be to bad if the Flyers lost the top position by one game now wouldn't it?? Where the heck are the Totonto fans?? Beer |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Pseudolus Date: 06 Oct 05 - 09:55 AM We've had an addition..... Pseudolus - Flyers Aine - Stars Jack the Sailor - Senators Bobad - Senators (We can double up can't we!) Beer - Red Wings And a slight modification due to Beer's suggestion, the first one out will have to eat crow and explain in a post why the rest of the teams still in it were better than theirs! And of course the original wager with Jack the Sailor and Pseudolus will stay the same. Now what was up with last night, the Flyers were cruising with a 3-1 lead and it fell apart! I'm still confident, it's only one game! It's not too late to join in the fun folks, pick your team and be proud! Penguins fans? Rangers? Canadians? OK, good thing I'm typing cause I couldn't have asked that last question with a straight face! Good Luck all, Frank |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Mark Cohen Date: 06 Oct 05 - 01:12 AM I think they should build wider rinks, like they had in the last Olympics. Man, watching those guys skate on that big ice was fantastic--poetry in motion! I'd go back to watching the NHL if they did that. It would be like watching the Canadiens in the old days. Aloha, Mark (Flyers fan in '74, '75, and (sadly) '76) |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 05 Oct 05 - 05:39 PM Canucks are gonna be TOUGH to beat this year. The Flames will be good as well. Whoever picks that Flames will have the best shot in this pool. They made the finals last season and have improved their roster. Detroit will have a tough time with the new salary cap. They have to change the nature of their team. I'm in the Pool though with an side bet of the same with Pseudolus on Sens v Flyers Its likely that one will be settled in the Eastern Conference Finals. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 05 Oct 05 - 05:13 PM Just to show what a sport/romantic/fool I am, I'll take the Canucks and Todd (take that) Bertuzzi. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Clinton Hammond Date: 05 Oct 05 - 01:36 PM Fuck hockey.... Because of this NHL stupidity, the gig tonight isn't even gonna START till after 11... Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Pseudolus Date: 05 Oct 05 - 01:16 PM OK Jack I have an idea...a small wager...no money, just pride. I like my Flyers and you like your Senators. The bet is this, whoever's team goes furthur wins the bet. The loser has to re-open this thread sometime next Spring and enter a post singing the praises of the winner's team. Aine seems pretty proud of her Stars, she may want in also. Just for fun, and bragging rights! whatdaya think? Go Flyers, Frank |
Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Áine Date: 05 Oct 05 - 12:59 PM Happy???? Are you kidding me???? At last there's something worth reading in the local paper again -- GO STARS!!! I was absolutely THRILLED to see the whole first page of the sports section (well, almost) devoted to the most important questions of the day -- Will this be Turco's last season? What are the rookies bringing to the game after a year off? What's Modano's story anyway? These are the things inquiring people want to know!! 'Unadorned and unadulterated thuggery masquerading as sport. A sickening spectatcle.' -- You're so right, Strollin' Johnny -- Ain't it GREAT! But at least hockey has some semblance of order to its particular brand of thuggery. ;-) Can't wait to see what the new rules bring to the game -- they're promising more speed and more goal opportunites . . . Ooooooh, I can't stand it. DROP THE BLOODY PUCK ALREADY!!! Besides, I swore off Guinness when the strike started . . . Can't wait to have my first sip tonight, along with the traditional Opening Game Bowl of Homemade Chili. What else is there to live for? All the best (especially to my fellow hockey fans - you know who you are!), Áine |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: bobad Date: 04 Oct 05 - 09:53 PM I, for one, am looking forward to the new season. I am a born again fan after giving up on hockey since shortly after the first expansion from the original six. The last few years I have become a fan of the Ottawa Senators whose style of play is reminiscent of the Canada - CCCP series of the good old days. This is the way hockey used to be played and hopefully this season with the new rules in play and with some of the technical changes being made we will see a return to REAL hockey as opposed to the clutch and grab hackey we've been exposed to of late. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hockey's back...Are ya happy about it? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 04 Oct 05 - 06:32 PM The Sens were very strong on offense and defense last full season, with a very young core of stars. A year and half of maturity with help a lot an Dany Heatly was a great aquisition. Hasek is about the best goalie of the last 15 years, He's won NHL MVP twice. Like I said, if he brings his "A" game the Sens will be tough to beat. |
