FAUX news has been peppering reports of ICE protests in Portland, OR with footage from the George Floyd protests of several years ago. Trump watches that on TV, tweets about it, then orders the Oregon National Guard to Portland. One of his own appointee Federal Judges said he can't use a tweet as proof and ordered a stop to that deployment.

So asshole Trump turns around and orders the California National Guard to go to Portland.

The guy is deranged, it's on full display, and no one lifts a finger. They've all complied in advance or are too afraid of being "primaried." Like their jobs are worth keeping?

The stock market seems to have dissociated itself from the Trump chaos, though early in the year it was tanking (under the age-old adage of buy-low, sell-high, I added money to my mutual funds when things were low.) It is perking along these days, even with a government shutdown. The small-cap and mid-cap funds struggle more, but it seems that the oligarchs have everything well in hand for the big investors.

To pass this funding bill requires more than a simple majority. In the senate they need 60 votes out of 100, and they have only 51 (plus the vice-president as a tie-breaker). The procedure used to pass that big ugly bill a few months ago was called "reconciliation" and only certain things could be in it to go forward, then they used the simple majority to pass it.

Apropos of nothing, the exaggerated femininity of the women in the Trump maga team is an identifiable thing - long hair in barrel curls, Botoxed faces, chiseled makeup looks, a lot of sheath dresses. You can tell what Trump likes to look at (Stepford Wives come to mind and Melania and his daughters and daughters-in-law.).

Their appearance is now so characteristic that it has its own name: the "Mar-a-Lago face", named after Trump's gigantic estate in Florida. Or simply: the "Maga look". Maga stands for "Make America Great Again", the movement that is rallying behind Trump.

In theory they shouldn't get to co-opt the look, it is a popular style now, but in practice, long hair right now seems to go along with that ilk, and I can grow my hair longer again at another time.

Bill D, the ranking of articles and suggestions of related ones that have been overlooked by various segments of the news media is of interest - if it is a realistic evaluation.

I flipped through channels this morning and landed on Joseph Campbell - The Message of the Myth, part two of the series Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth with Bill Moyers. Timing was perfect, as he described why the move to try to adopt old principles from the ancient parts of religions is to force the relics of an ancient world on modern cultures. The world was very small when some of these religions formed and their allegorical stories to teach behavior no longer fit an industrial world around the globe. What we're seeing with the xtian nationalists is exactly that - trying to fit the modern industrial world into the cookie cutter of a biblical world written about 2000 years ago. Texts written by men, for men, in an age of slavery, pushing back against animism and Zoroastrians and Egyptian pharaohs and who knows what else. Though I think they're trying for the 1850s, not the year 1.

When I said "our knowledge of history can be changed" I was referring to scientific and analytical discoveries which can give us more insight into what actually happened, e.g. archaeological discoveries which reveal more specific information than we already had, or other evidence of more recent world events.

Unless someone has access to the TARDIS, the past cannot be changed. Our knowledge of history can be changed, and there are some people who can influence our perceptions of what happened by putting their own spin on it.

While Trump is in power he can influence our perceptions of history but as soon as he loses that power there are other powers who can change the perceptions of *his* history - or he succumbs to his medical conditions and falls off his perch.

Watching clips of his speech to the UN this week, I think he has managed to change his own history in the eyes of the world and its leaders, and not in a good way.
