It doesn't help when some idiot is digging a tunnel for a new underground railway under your back garden and fails to notice they are less than 15metres from the surface... It's what happened in Stratford, London a few years ago, building the link for the Channel Tunnel.

The truth is, an earthquake can happen anywhere, anytime. No place is exempt. And they can be devastating. Geologists are discovering new faults all the time. Every time they get a new shaker, especially in some place that seldom gets a quake, they get a new look from a new angle on what lies below the surface. It's awesome to think that the Mississippi River may be a subsequent stream, that is, a stream which follows a fault line! Remember the New Madrid quake that happened back in the early 1800's. It was huge and it obliterated the entire city of New Madrid.

footnote: Most earthquake policies do not come in force until a year later. I would imagine that this is so folks cannot claim preexisting earthquake damage or have coverage for aftershocks from a recent event. Check with your agent.

If you run a search for Colchester and earthquake, you'll see that we do get quite strong quakes. Not often. But in the South East, where no effort has been made to make modern buildings earthquake proof, and most building has taken place. On flood plains, and sometimes landfill. And as you can find in some accounts, the movement travels some distance because of the land structure - if there's a quake in Canterbury or Colchester, London knows about it. We can also pick up on continental quakes - in the 30s a Brussels quake had people leaving buildings in Brighton. And we get frequent small tremors in other parts of the country.

Yes Skarpi. I've read about the ominous happenings in Iceland and that is a very scary business. Our volcanoes tend to be explosive and rare occurrences and your's are more spewing and oozing lava everywhere but you folks have nowhere to run! Keep a Viking ship or two handy for a quick getaway!

I do carry earthquake insurance. It's a little pricey but even a moderate shaker can break sewage lines and other plumbing, crack roofs and window frames and shift your foundation: all very expensive to fix. It's amazing but your house can be declared unfit for human habitation and it looks like nothing is wrong with it but its virtually totaled.

Got my annual bill to renew my home owners' insurance. I don't have earthquake coverage, the policy reminded me,
and we live in earthquake country. I'm pondering it.

we had some hard earthquakes 6,7 and 6,5 and 6,0 in the year 2000
and its not over yet .........

Thanks for the good wishes all. The final calculation by the USGS was 4.8 which is a moderate quake. The Mayacamus fault runs North South and we are just a few miles from it. This event was about midway between the Mayacamus and the Bartlett Springs fault. It was felt as far south as Cloverdale, west to Ft. Bragg and east to Willows. North to a wilderness area called the Yolla Bolly. The little village of Covello was just a few miles from it but I haven't heard any reports of damage from there. Quakes are weird. The Geysers is only a dozen miles from here and there are sometimes 4.0 events there (it is one of the most seismically active regions in the state) and we never feel them. The energy travels in a different direction most of the time.


I have experienced several large events such as the Loma Prieta which stopped the Bay to Bay World Series in '89 I believe it was. We felt it only slightly here. I was in Victorville (George AFB) during the Newhall event that leveled the VA hospital and that one shook the heck out of us at 6 o'clock in the AM. I was about 40 miles from the Coalinga quake and I thought it was going to slosh the water out of the canal of which bank I was standing. WOW! I've been fortunate to have never been in the middle of one. You never know though.

But I will say this. I'd much rather take my chances with an earthquake than with a midwest twister. The thought of those scare the daylights out of me!

So what are you doing to keep your family safe, you who dwell in earthquake territory? Do you keep shoes right by the bed at all times to prevent the cut feet that people get when getting out of bed in fright?

Do you have stout pieces of furniture to shelter under?

Is your water heater strapped down?

Do you know how to turn off gas and water supplies?

etc?

The "smile" in Idaho's Snake River plain is the path the Yellowstone Caldera has taken over the past few million years. We're in the Caldera and could experience a big 'un any time -- we get smaller ones all the time. There was a fairly large one, the Borah Quake, in I think it was 1982 that caused land shifting and sinking about 70 miles north of here.

Turns out it was my sister jumping up and down in a fit of pique, enough to shake the house.

Sorry, Skarpi, but they do happen. The only place I've felt one was in England - about 15 years ago. It was only a tremor, but the building I was in shook.
It was instantly recognizable for what it was and lasted less than a minute. I was in Durham at the time.

I've been to California and NZ since, but ne'er a wobble!

At 0142 and 44 seconds we had a 5.0 shaker about 39 miles from hereabout 7 miles west of Lake Pillsbury in northern CA. There were a couple of distinct aftershock. I was in bed at the time watching the news when it felt as though someone was jouncing my bed from underneath as kids do a bunk bed. There was a series of up and down jolts, a pause and then another series of similar jolts. Then a low roar started and the entire house shook and rattled but no damage. If you want to know more about it, Google USGS/California. The big red (probably now blue ) square on the map represents the quake. The little cluster of minor quakes below Clearlake is where the Geothermal Power Plant is located at a place Known as the Geysers. Yup real geysers . We have some interesting geology here.
