Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Nov 07 - 11:52 PM LOL.....No big deal! Sometimes these things take off and sometimes they don't. This one doesn't seem to be going anywhere although it took off fast. Maybe its the holiday..... In any case we ought to post the "rules" such as they are in the first post. You get used to doing something and you kinda' forget. Then again, maybe Kendall didn't mean to run it that way at first.......Dosen't matter....glad you showed up Ranger! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: RangerSteve Date: 21 Nov 07 - 10:56 PM Spaw - thanks for explaining the proper ettiquette (I have no idea how to spell that word). And I apologize to everyone, especially Kendall for screwing things up. |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: Amos Date: 21 Nov 07 - 08:51 PM Mandrakes sidekick looked like Yul Brynner with bracelets on, or Mister Clean. But I can't remember his name. And Jiggs akways had a cigar butt sticking out of his mouth. Which brings to mind Li'l Orphan Anny, her dog and her sugar-daddy Warbucks. Not an eyeball in the lot. A |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Nov 07 - 08:03 PM Yep.......Jiggs and Maggie had been working class poor before they won the sweepstakes and although Maggie adapted to her new lifestyle and was prone to putting on airs, Ol' Jiggs was still the same guy as before but in a top hat and tails with spats!!! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: bobad Date: 21 Nov 07 - 07:53 PM Wasn't it corned beef and cabbage that Jiggs had a thing for? |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Nov 07 - 07:46 PM Ranger.....Generally these things are done by PM so everyone coming along can play. The winner makes the next list. Before you came on the thread I had sent my answers to Kendall for his as well as John's questions. Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 20 Nov 07 - 07:25 PM RangerSteve--Do you give away the endings of movies too? |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: RangerSteve Date: 20 Nov 07 - 07:12 PM Barney Goodles horse was Sparkplug. Years ago I bought a banjo-uke at a flea market only because it had a pen and ink drawing of Barney and Sparkplub on the head. (unsigned, so I don't know if it was by the strip's creator) Snuffy Smith was originally a minor character in the Google strip, which was created by (I think) Billy DeWolf. I don't know if he was the writer when Smith was introduced. Batman - Bruce Wayne, the butler was Alfred. Henry never spoke a word. Maggie and Jiggs' strip was "Bringing up Father", I think. He hung out at Dinty Moore's, which is the name of a canned beef stew. Prince Valiant is the knight on KA's round table Smokey Stover is the strip with the firemen. (Notary Sojac) Lothar was Mandrake's sidekick. Don't know the creator, but he's the same guy who did the Phantom. (which was a great under-rated movie back in the 90's) |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: Bill D Date: 20 Nov 07 - 04:39 PM and John on SSC got the tricycle one correctly. |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: kendall Date: 20 Nov 07 - 04:18 PM So far, Spaw has an almost perfect score, and John is second with one miss. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: Bill D Date: 20 Nov 07 - 03:38 PM (well, Spaw, not all of us got the same comics in our little local papers..and *I* goofed...it just hit me, the button eating chickens were not in the strip I was thinking of...they were in another strip...so I guess the trivia question needs to be which one, and who popped buttons. THEN, in the strip I had in mind, the main character has a bus that runs on grape juice. |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: katlaughing Date: 20 Nov 07 - 01:58 PM Man, either you all paid too much attention to the details or you're all a LOT older than me! I think it's the latter, mostly...nyah,nyah,nyah!**bg** |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: catspaw49 Date: 20 Nov 07 - 01:18 PM Are we supposed to be answering all thru PM's or what? Might I suggest that the first to answer Kendall's correctly can then post new ones and so on? If we're going to do that, let's start now. Kendall can tell us who got his all right and the wwe'll defer the next questions to the winner. If John doesn't win, we can slide his and Bill's in together. BTW........most of these are okay to easy but Bill's buttos for chicken feed has me stumped!!! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 20 Nov 07 - 12:54 PM Other questions might be: Who created Maggie and Jiggs? What was his (Jiggs') favorite hang-out? What food product, still available, was named for that hang-out? What was the actual name of the strip? Who (comically speaking) became a member of King Arthur's Round Table? Who played him in a 1950s movie? What strip featured looney fire-fighters? What was the name of Mandrake the Magician's side-kick? Who created Mandrake? Why were most of the side-kicks of the era folks of color...think Mandrake, Lone Ranger, Red Ryder, Green Hornet? And why were all of the jungle kings and queens Caucasian? The last two questions are purely rhetorical. Please don't answer these questions here, do send them to Kendall pm. |

Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 20 Nov 07 - 12:36 PM I sent my answers in for 8 questions. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: Bill D Date: 20 Nov 07 - 12:30 PM Further...what were Snuffy's wife's and baby's names? (when I looked up creator's name, the name I could 'almost' remember wasn't right...seems the guy who drew it for as long as I could remember was not the original.) |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Comics quiz From: Bill D Date: 20 Nov 07 - 12:25 PM "her aunt Fritzi" (Ritz) (for the pedants) I know the last 4, but the first few are just beyond the edges of my memory. I could add a bunch of similar questions that I DO know, though. Like...Who was the fat guy who rode a tricycle with an outhouse built on behind? And who popped buttons off of his shirt into the mouths of waiting chickens? (and what was his 'unusual' mode of transportaion.) |
