Subject: RE: Shawl in Auction - ends at midnight today 11/30 From: SINSULL Date: 02 Dec 07 - 09:06 AM Actually I went to bed early and left it to the Mudcat gods to decide who should wear the shawl. I didn't know I had won it (had several errands to run on Saturday) until Jeri and Jacqui stopped by the Museum Christmas Fair and told me. WHOO WHOO. I have special plans for that shawl! Thank you MMario! SINS |

Subject: RE: Shawl in Auction - ends at midnight today 11/3 From: Amos Date: 01 Dec 07 - 09:44 PM Actually, it is the maximum AM, Jeri == 12 full hours before the sun crosses the meridian. But to keep it consistent with the hours passing (1 of the antemeridian, 2, etc.) it should be called OO:OO AM. I s'pose Bill could provide an extensive exegesis on whether the last minute of one day and the first minute of the next are divided by a second, a microsecons, a millisecond, a nano-second, or something smaller. Subject: RE: Shawl in Auction - ends at midnight today 11/30 From: ranger1 Date: 01 Dec 07 - 02:28 PM So how late did SUNSULL stay up and guard her bid? How late did Charley Noble last? Inquiring minds want to know... |

Subject: RE: Shawl in Auction - ends at midnight today 11/30 From: wysiwyg Date: 01 Dec 07 - 11:01 AM Duh! Jeri straightens me out with simplicity, again! :~) She passes me like a hockey puck-- I like it. ~Susan |
|
Subject: RE: Shawl in Auction - ends at midnight today 11/3 From: Jeri Date: 01 Dec 07 - 11:00 AM Susan, the main auction page has a countdown: 'x full days' until the day it ends, then it counts down hours. It's not going to get much clearer than that. If you still find it hard to understand, maybe say something in the FAQ. I don't know that other people have a problem with it, but you can ask there. It would take a Max or a Jeff to change the way the auction displays. |

Subject: RE: Shawl in Auction - ends at midnight today 11/30 From: wysiwyg Date: 01 Dec 07 - 10:52 AM Could that very clear and simple text just be added to the Auction page somewhere, or to the Auction FAQ thread we have around here somedamnwhere? Not a fight. A request for simplicity for the confused. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Shawl in Auction - ends at midnight today 11/3 From: Jeri Date: 01 Dec 07 - 10:40 AM Midnight is at night. 24 hours in a day, 24:00 hours belongs to the DAY BEFORE. This is also 12 AM, which technically, isn't AM. After that time is AM. The next day starts AFTER. Fight with the AM/PM authorities - Mudcat has it right. If the auction ends at midnight of a certain day, it's that day, not the day after it. |
|
Subject: RE: Shawl in Auction - ends at midnight today 11/30 From: wysiwyg Date: 01 Dec 07 - 10:26 AM I'd still like to ask that the Auction get the date issue clarified. "ends at midnight today 11/30" doesn't quite seem accurate-- "ends at midnight tonight 11/30" might, but I still think it actually ended at midnight 12/01 because I think that at midnight the date advances. It's in the Auction threads themselves that it's hard to be sure what is meant until the actual closing day, when the wording changes to something more accurate. If one is plannig to babysit the computer on the closing date, either to bid or because it's your item being Auctioned, it's hard to be sure just what date that's going to be necessary in order to set aside the time to do it. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Shawl in Auction - ends at midnight today 11/3 From: jacqui.c Date: 30 Nov 07 - 06:30 PM Midnight is the middle of the night, not the start of the day. This will be the middle of the night tonight, when the date (not day) changes from Nov 30 to Dec 1. Villan - there's going to be a problem when my automatic system goes after yours. |
|
Subject: RE: Shawl in Auction - ends at midnight today 11/30 From: wysiwyg Date: 30 Nov 07 - 05:38 PM I'd like to respectfully request that we [here at Mudcat} get this "Midnight Today" thing permanently cleared up. Midnight is considered the START of the day, isn't it? So the midnight that's rolling around tonight is actually midnight tomorrow-- "Closes at Midnight Tonight (EST)" is certainly correct, but that will make it Dec. 1, won't it? This plays hell with trying to be sure what night to watch the auction at the last minute. Maybe it's just me, in which case straighten my naggy ass out, but I find it very confusing. ~Susan |
