Subject: RE: Stan Rogers - June 2nd 2008-25 years on. From: Nick E Date: 12 May 08 - 08:09 PM Even though I heard all his music posthumously, From Coffee House to Concert Hall, released after his passing has such great stuff, I love Guysbourough Train. I'll admit this is mostly just a bump up, but for Stan I feel no shame! |

Subject: RE: Stan Rogers - June 2nd 2008-25 years on. From: GUEST,Tim Jaques Date: 12 May 08 - 05:11 PM I remember where I was the day after. I was in Kingston, Ontario and had placed my laundry in the machines and gone across the street to pick up a paper to read while I waited. The news was on the front page. What a voice. I still can't believe it's been 25 years. |

There are so many that I love of this man that I feel like a tribute band. Well missed. But his voice lingers on and is capable hands in this man's family. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: Stan Rogers - June 2nd 2008-25 years on. From: Nick E Date: 11 May 08 - 08:30 PM I have little of value to add but to say I am happy I know of him and he recorded so that I have heard his work. 45 Years is just about the most heartbreakingly beautiful song I can think of. |

Subject: RE: Stan Rogers - June 2nd 2008-25 years on. From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 11 May 08 - 08:26 PM True some are not folksingers but most are. Stan's family are regular performers as well as many of the locals who were his close friends. The area is where many of his best songs were set; his ancestrial home. |

Subject: RE: Stan Rogers - June 2nd 2008-25 years on. From: GUEST,Pete Sumner Date: 11 May 08 - 11:25 AM I still have that recording...had it transferred to DAT years ago...My old buddy in Scotland, Howard Evans from Carnoustie, had the original tape in his safekeeping...don't know if it's still usable... I'm not sure of the legalities of releasing this stuff into the wider world, but would be happy to do what I can to get this stuff out there....with the family's approval...and all loose ends tied up... I don't want to make anything out of it... it is an amazing recording...I can't remember if I did the intro that night..or the sound...or just drank Heineken.... The original recording lasts for over two hours...Stan solo....he just didn't want to stop...and the capacity crowd drank it up... After the first song, Stan looked up in amazement at the reception and applause...and said... "Do you guys want to come home with me?......I can get you better beer than you get down here" He had us in the palm of his hand.... Hmmmmmmm Any suggestions..... |

Subject: RE: Stan Rogers - June 2nd 2008-25 years on. From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 11 May 08 - 07:33 AM I first heard his music the day after he died. I was driving through Canada, listening to Morningside with Peter Gzowski, and he was playing some terrific music. The station kept fading in and out, so I didn't find out who the singer was, nor what the occasion. Two, three years later, living in Texas, I heard that same music on a folk music program on the radio, and the DJ told the story of Stan Rogers and the flight from Kerrville. The penny dropped - Gzowski, a big fan of Rogers, had been playing the music in tribute to him on his passing. His work is certainly still popular in Sydney folk clubs & Australian festivals. |

Subject: RE: Stan Rogers - June 2nd 2008-25 years on. From: sapper82 Date: 11 May 08 - 03:54 AM I never knew of Stan Rogers until fairly recently, past 10y or so. One of my great regrets. However, after seeing Julie Felix at Crich Tramway last Monday, other½ & I stopped off in Cromford for fish & chips to take home. A couple of ladies about my ageish with not quite American accents were in the queue and we got chatting and yes, they were Canadian. They'd heard the name Julie Felix but didn't know a lot about her, but when I made a reference to the great Canadian singer/songwriter who died in the plane fire, one looked amazed! "You mean Stan Rogers? You've actually heard of him over here?" So there we were in the Chip Shop, wife trying very hard to look as if she wasn't with me, singing a couple of Stan Rogers choruses! |

From: breezy Date: 11 May 08 - 03:50 AM If the chance comes your way then go to listen to Nathan Rogers sing, he'll be over in England next year, his interpretation of his father's songs has to be heard live to be believed, I was most impressed by his rendition of Archie F's 'Dark Eyed Moll' a 'must see' in 2009 |

Subject: RE: Stan Rogers - June 2nd 2008-25 years on. From: Backwoodsman Date: 11 May 08 - 02:28 AM Pete - hi from Darkest Lincolnshire, and thanks for reminding me of Stan's Bermuda gig(s). I had a copy of a tape of Stan at the Bermuda FC which I believe was given by Garnet to Archie Fisher, who in turn gave a copy to a mutual friend of ours who worked with him at the BBC. So it was at least fourth-generation copy of a tape recording, and not good quality at all - sounded very 'bootleg' indeed, with plenty of audience-noise, but it did give a great flavour of the man working solo in a club setting, and yes, it had the inevitable slap-down of the heckler! Unfortunately, a house move resulted in its disappearance and, search as I may, I've been unable to find it - looks like it's gone forever, and a sad loss of something pretty unique I guess. I still regularly perform '45 Years', 'Three Fishers' and 'Lies', and occasionally 'The Field Behind The Plough' - wish I coulld match the power and authority of The Man. A truly great writer, singer and, above all , performer. Gone, but never forgotten. |

Subject: RE: Stan Rogers - June 2nd 2008-25 years on. From: topical tom Date: 10 May 08 - 10:14 PM A great singer-songwriter. I only saw him live once (at the Owen Sound Summerfolk Festival in 1980) but his performance was stirring and wonderful.I have listened to many of his songs since and I listen to them over and over again.A terrible loss but what a legacy! |

Subject: Stan Rogers - June 2nd 2008-25 years on. From: GUEST,Pete Sumner Date: 10 May 08 - 08:13 PM I'm sure it will not have escaped folks attention that it is almost 25 years since we lost Stan in that aircraft fire in Cincinnati, on his way back to Toronto from the Kerriville Folk Festival in Texas. It is gratifying that his songs and music have grown in popularity over two and a half decades. I was going to add 'far beyond his wildest dreams'...but Stan was a big guy with a huge heart and big dreams and ideas flowed from him. As many will tell you, he was an amazing individual to be around and was generous with his hospitality and his music. I miss his bear hugs and have his "Hush yer clabberjaw", to a heckler at the Bermuda Folk Club, still ringing in my ears..... The sight and sound of Stan Rogers, singing and playing those wonderful Grit Laskin guitars, will live with me all my days, and I'm grateful I had the chance to witness the man and his music. 25 years on...... |
