Well, Hell no... I ain't givin' up this farm fir nuthin'... And I hate the Charlotte area... Heck, Charlotte in my view, ain't even a city... It's just one big ass sprawl with too many people and too much traffic...

We just want a little 2 bedroom house, preferably in the country... Rock Hill area sounds nice... No, not down into the Neanderthal, SC... I had 'nuff o' them folks back in West Ginny where folks truly believed that NASCAR was one of th 3 branches of governemnt...

Ya see... The P-Vine has one 2 sons, 2 d-i-ls and 3 grand-youngins in Charlotte... Then another son, d-i-l and couple more grand-youngins in Athens, Ga... Then her sister in Boone, NC so we figured that this area might be okay to winter up in... Prolly no snow or ice which I am sick of...

We have a young lady who would love to winter here at the far, , feed the cats and look after everything so why not... I ain't sayin' we're gonna do it but after the veggie garden gives out and I finish with my last gig on Oct. 4th I think we're gonna head down and check stuff out...

B~

"north central South..."

Reminds me of an old Steve Martin routine where he rambles on and on about what time he plans to do something: "the late mid-morning; I mean early in the late morning... no, make that the early-early late mid-morning...etc. etc....

Also, there's always been plenty of reference to "old New Orleans"; more recently, since Katrina, we have people referring to the "new old New Orleans." My contractor friends who specialize in historic renovation recently got business cards printed as "Old New Old New Orleans, Inc."

"Any north.central South Carolinians???"

If there were, they'd better run for cover. There's war going on in Georgia, you know.

The area around Charlotte is pretty densely settled suburb and growing at an alarming rate. Though the layoffs at Wachovia might slow that a little. I wouldn't want to retire In the Charlotte suburbs.

Like I said the area around York is more peaceful.

Spaw

Rock Hill and surrounding area is dense suburb. Sumter is a typical southern military town. I've not spent the night there, but I'll wager its not the ideal environment for an aging folkie.

Columbia is the capital and a university town. It has its charms but it has way too many red neck conservative Ron Paul supporter types.

The area between the Atlantic and I95 has its charms going right down the coast. But Raliegh and the triangle and a lot of smaller Carolina cities on the Piedmont are also pretty nice. In the mountains I've heard a lot of good things about Asheville.

Spartanburg and Greenville have a lot going for them as well if you can get past all the "christian", "universities". Clemson and the mountains around it is lovely.

North Carolina is a wonderful state. I like it at least as well as any state I've lived in (except maybe Rhode Island), and better than most. The coastal areas are the best part, but there's a lot of good stuff further inland, too. Anyone who can live just outside of Harper's Ferry or in rural Virginia and like it can live in most parts of North Carolina and like it too.

Any reason for preferring SC to NC? Charlotte is right on the border, so you could be equally close to the city in either state.

Like SRS, I'm wondering about you guys leaving Luray so soon after going to so much trouble to settle in there... I can understand it being a simple matter of "the boss sez so," but...Geez!

Is there any hope of coming out ahead financially on the real estate deal? That is, is there any hope that you'll be paid for the efforts you've put into improving your current property?

Or are you keeping your home and just trying to acquire a second base-of-operations for extended visits to the in-laws?

...maybe it's none of our bizness...;^)

LOL......Wasn't trying to insult Wilmington JtS but if I were able to map out a new USA, I'd have a strip 30 or so miles inland from Virginia Beach to Jacksonville.

Are you planning to move, or simply have a property handy for frequent visits? Seems like you've just gone to a lot of work to relocate to Luray only to turn around and move again.

The York area seems like a nice place if you like quiet, country life. The area Spaw is talking about is pretty dense major city suburbs.

We live in Wilmington on the North Carolina coast. This area has some things in common with Charlotte and Raleigh, other things in common with Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Savannah.

Are we near where you are moving? Is four or five hours drive near?

Having once lived there, my advice is to stay to hell where you are.

If you must move, stay as close to Charlotte as you can, like in the northern burbs of Rock Hill, Riverview and the like..........The farther south you go the more South Carolina eats whale dicks...gigantic whale dicks! The coastal portion of SC is another state entirely as are the coastal sections of Georgia, NC and southern Virginia. I'm lobbying to have that area added as another state as the area has zipshit diddly squat nothing to do with the rest of the states they are in.

Inland SC is the absolute pits until you get to Rock Hill which is almost Charlotte. I once spent three weeks one weekend in Columbia and the night I spent in Sumter probably has taken several years off of my life.

There are some excellent contradance musos in Columbia, if that's any help; it's a while since I was there so I'm unsure of where the boundaries of "north.central" SC might be.

Cheers, Rowan

My brother (not musical) lives in western S.C. They like it except for two things. 1. They had a long, long drought. (I'm ashamed to say that I don't know if it ever broke.) 2. The deer eat everything.
