Well Gourmand, of course there is nothing to prevent anything being bought and sold (and eaten) at any time of the year. Market forces you might say. But IMHO when you take away the natural demarcations of seasons and events the resultant blurring of the boundaries leaves us all the poorer. One example is runner beans. The best ones are those you grow in your own plot. We have always grown our own runner beans and we never buy any in the shops or out of season. They taste delicious and are something to look forward to. I guess that's the secret. Half the fun is the anticipation!

Best wishes,

Peter

What's wrong with mince pies being sold and eaten all year round, just like hot cross buns as already said? It's all just merchandise anyway; what really gets me is the incessant and brainless music blaring everywhere, and the waste of electricity caused by the equally brainless competition now to have the most elaborate and vulgar display of illuminated decorations lavished all over houses and gardens.

"My mother used to do her Xmas shopping on Dec. 26...for the following year!"

The January sales are pretty good as well.

If you drive a small car and can't find a parking place, you might say "Bah! Hummer!"...

Giok, that would be in San Francisco's Castro District.

Oh Bubbly - nothing could be further from the truth!

I visited Munich and Salzburg (Germany and Austria) in the beginning of August and there were shops selling the most glorious Christmas decorations, table coverings, tree ornaments and painted eggs... I was happier than a pig with lipstick! (Although the lime green frog in a bright red bikini for hanging on the tree was a little disturbing, as was the Christmas Panda....).

You'd be better off with:

As they say oop North - Bah! Humber!

Although I was a little perturbed over the chocolate 'Advent' style Ramadan calendars on sale in our local Sainsburys SavaCentre.... A door for each day of Ramadan and each has a little chocolate behind it. It's covered in a host of religious phrases and sayings about how to honour Ramadan.

Jeanie...I agree! There is nothing so effective as a loud tut tut tut! Mind you, they sell hot cross buns all year now!

I think that the blurring of the boundaries of all these festivals and seasonal occasions does us all harm.

Best wishes,

Peter

Even more Christmas stuff in Sainsbury's this week. Last week it was just a small end-of-aisle display. Today - half the length of the cake shelving...I took a look and tut-tutted vehemently in the way that only a woman aged 50+ is capable. What did I see ? "Deep-filled mince pies. Eat by 27th October 2008." Tut, tut, tut, tut, tuttttttttt !!!!!

Interesting song M Ted but is it in the best scroogemas tradition?

(I was going to say...is it folk? But I thought I'd better not!)

Best wishes,
Peter

Craft shops start displaying & selling chrissy designs in the middle of the year so crafty folks can make stuff.

This is a good idea, BUT displaying & selling commercial chrissy gifts & food & decorations so early is not.

How are the shops going to sell stuff for the other (hallmark or real) holidays left this year if the shelves are full of other stuff?

sandra (thinking of the poor unfortunate retailers)

Hmmm, I really must start thinking of making chrissy stuff, I'm running bit late, but I have bought a few souvenir things for my next Santee.

When the Christmas shopping season begins, all the internet merchants start offering free shipping, and they ship faster, too. So there is some advantage.

Christmas is the season of "Peace on Earth, Goodwill to Man!" and I love that. Here's something for all you Christmas Cynics--A really special christmas song Listen to it here-you won't ever hear it on the radio--

December 24th is good - no women cluttering up the aisles. I like the all-night grocery for shopping, myself.

I think it is beholden upon all those of us of the male persuasion to uphold the grand tradition already alluded to here. (Especially as we have an interest in all things traditional!) Namely the purchase of all gifts etc. as late as possible on December 24th! Thanks to the posters who reminded us of this ancient custom!

Best wishes,

Peter

It works for me.

Got half pissed 30 years ago with my ex brother-in-law. We went to get a present for his wife. The sales lady showed him some fine lingery/lawnjerry/lonjerrie underwear. She asked if he'd like them gift wrapped. I said, "No thank you, we'll eat them here." We left before security arrived.

I HATE Christmas.

I am as disgusted by this as any one but the simple fact is: they wouldn't waste the shelf space on it if it wasn't going to sell. It is our own fault (not us, everyone else).

Hello,

I walked down to my local shop today and guess what was on display?

Chocolate Santas, Mistletoe Chocolates and deep filled mince pies!

They even beat the halloween goods this year!

Has any one else noticed that the season to be jolly has arrived early?

Best wishes,

Peter
