Bobertz,

Ya know, it is surely a sign of great personal insecurity when you start casting aspersions about another man' s mental condition based on where he chooses to live. Now, it occurs to me that you are projecting as a way of compensating for all the times P-Vine musta tole you YOU were unhinged. Don't answer right away--reflect on it fer a while and tell me if I ain't spot on here.

Bobert, I don't really think they are. I've had lots of coasters left at my house and they just sort of sit there until somebody moves them or they fall off the table or something. I'm not even sure that left coasters have a mind of their own to be mentally ill WITH.

Beer mats, on the other hand....

Yeah, that's right! California is a TERRIBLE place. Don't come here. And please, if you have had family or friends or aquaintences for that matter, move here from the East Coast, take them back. I'm sure that will help the mental health of both coasts. It will also go a long way to putting our political climate back to it's more conservative standard of times past. Hey! We will even throw Awnald in for free.

I hate the Rose Parade. Every year while you Easterns are shivering under tons of snow and blizzards on comes this parade seen the world over. People out in the early January morning in tee shirts and shorts, squinting into the sun to watch scantilly clad beauty queens go drifting by on floral arragngement.

Oh, we had ANOTHER earthquake the other day. It was a big one for us. I actually heard the window rattle. I was watching TV at the time. I can't remember what news was breaking. Was it ANOTHER hurricane devasting New Orleans and the surrounding environs for hundreds of miles? Or was it yet another twister erasing whole towns off the map? Oh! Wait! No, it was just another flood innundating thousand of square miles of farmland and any and all who happened to be in it's path.

Should I be the one to tell you that the San Andreas is a "strike-slip" fault and not a "strike-thrust" fault? That means that rather than falling into the ocean, San Francisco is destined to become an island (which is alright with me) and not another Atlantis.

Yes our "Disney-tized" voters voted out hunter-control of the mountain lion populations. They all felt that they knew better than the game management people and we are now increasingly seeing more of the sweet little "Big Cats" roaming the streets of suburbia. Fortuantely they are now gobbling up the very folks who voted to "de-regiulate" their numbers.

Fires! It's BAD here. Very bad. East Coast folks move out here and see a lovely canyon setting and say "That's where I want to live!" Yup, right in the very heart of Nature itself. Right out in the chamise (from the Spanish word "chamiso" which translates "firewood") and greasewood. Ah, nature! Funny thing about chamise and greasewood. It has a neat survival trick. It's made to burn and burn hot. They produce more BTUs than just about any other type wood. This way they completely destroy any other plants or most trees in their vicinity and then from their deep, knotted roots they spring back to life after the next rains fall.

Yes California is very dangerous and only the mentally ill should live here. Volcanoes, fires, pestilence, political insanity. Best stay home.

Art, we get an average of 270 days of sunshine. Skiing of all sorts is within a half-hour's drive, water-skiing and other such things are available within 20 minutes on the largest reservoir in the state, whooping cranes mate and raise their young within a 90 minute drive, there's fishing, hunting, birding, rock hounding, gold washing, hiking, rock climbing, and camping just (literally!) outside the city limits. I can walk, golf, or cross-country ski just outside my back yard.

Who needs California?

Well, we get about 355 days of sunshine here, summer days are hot and summer night are cool - winter days are cool and winter nights are cooler. Relative humidity ranges from 10% to 35%. It does snow occasionally - we had a 6" snowfall in 2006. Skiing is about a mile away - straight up - or an hour drive around. We have lots of beautiful beaches, but no ocean. Who needs California?

I will not go down under the ground
'Cause somebody tells me that death's comin' 'round
An' i will not carry myself down to die
When i go to my grave my head will be high.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before i go down under the ground.

There's been rumors of war an' wars that have been
The meaning of life has been lost in the wind
An' some people thinkin' that the end is close by
'Stead of learnin' to live they are learnin' to die.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before i go down under the ground.

I don't know if i'm smart but i think i can see
When someone is pullin' the wool over me
An' if this war comes an' death's all around
Let me die on this land 'fore i die underground.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before i go down under the ground.

There's always been people that have to cause fear
They've been talkin' about war now for many long years
I have read all their statements an' i've not said a world
But now, Lord God, let my poor voice be heard.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before i go down under the ground.

If i had rubies an' riches an' crowns
I'd buy the whole world an' change things around
I'd throw all the guns an' the tanks in the sea
For they are mistakes of the past history.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before i go down under the ground.

Let me drink from the waters where the mountain streams flood
Let the smell of wildflowers flow free thru my blood
Let me sleep in your meadows with the green grassy leaves
Let me walk down the highway with my brother in peace.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before i go down under the ground.

Go out in your country where the land meets the sun
See the craters an' the canyons where the waterfalls run
Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho
Let every state in this union seep down deep in your soul.
An' you'll die in your footsteps
Before you go down under the ground. up

I heard decades ago that all the loose screws and nuts tend to fall into California.

Probably no less true than it is for Alaska.

Californians need only change their appraoch to housing befitting the conditions. Sub terreanean earth bermed homes would guard against fire and earthquake damage.

SUre. Right about now, to find a place where there is an inch of snow on the ground and thirty feet of cold cloudcover in the sky, where there is no Sea, and you'd need about 80 gallons of fuel to find one...and you get all of 100 sunny days a year...wow. It's like a dream come true. Wrong kind of dream, though. Being close to your legendary Library would be a Big Plus, for sure, but I am not sure it would be big enough--kinda like John McCain's new reboot position...closeville, dude, but not Cigarville.

You should move to Pocatello. We don't have sharks here (there are some pool sharks over at the Senior Center). We do have cougars and moose and elk and deer and bear, but They Know Their Place. We have some politicians, but nowhere near the infestation that exists in California and "Voter Bug-Off" usually takes care of them.

AND Costco is opening here on October 23 so you'd have everything here you have in San Diego, except for the US Marine Corps Recruit Depot. We do have National Guard and a Army Reserve units, though.

We have a full-spectrum population here in San Diego, Michael--street people all the way up to the Rancho Santa Fe mansions.

One of the things that differentiates mentally sound people from the less-so is the ability to differentiate between scary pictures and actual probabilities relating to real-world future events.

I have carefully listened to people insisting California was about to fall into the ocean and only a nutcase would live there for, oh, twent plus years.

So far we have lost a couple of people to collapsing sandstone cliffs which anyone with their eyes open can see are "iffy". We've had some hooracious fires that lost us a lot of homes, but certainly no more than the Missouri floods or the New Orleans hurricanes, which we don't get. One guy bitten by a great White. Meanwhile the rest of the nation had its guts ripped out by a school of Olde Whytes. By and large, the evidence seems to support the idea that living in Califiornia is quite as safe--and in many ways more pleasant--than living in many other places.

I am always open to invitations, however!

Funny thing, most of the most dangerous areas (fires, landslides, etc.) are populated by well-to-do people. In other places, it's the poor who have to worry about natural disasters, not so in So Cal.

One of the films produced by the senior film department at the local university last spring was a drama about a father and his two sons in a field with the sky boiling in ash on the horizon. Nothing in the title or script referred to it but the audience all knew watching it, that this was the pyroclastic flow of the Yellowstone caldera exploding. The teen son wanted to start the truck, the dad kept stopping him, in the camera you could see their hunting rifle. The tension built as you wondered if the dad was going to use the rifle on them or what... they faced the ash in the end as it kept getting thicker, their faces looking more reddened/burned as the little boy played with his wrestling action figures on the ground. Then the teen took a pose of one of the action figures, they each took a 'hero' pose as the ash came over them.
That film still haunts me.

Well, brucie, mental illness is a funny thing... No, not hardy-haw-haw funny but strange...

Yeah, I think not havin' a concern about wild animals eating you or having yer neighbor's house on top o' you has to fall somewhere into this discussion...

Meanwhile, there is that fault line... There is a reason theycall it a "fault line", ain't there???

BTW, I'm still awaitin' an answer on the sea level question, folks... Seems to me if the Specific Ocean is like a big bath tub and you go dumping California into it it will overflow... I think John from Kansas has given this some thought... Maybe he will stop in and enlighten us...

You forget that I've been out there, Amos. And to see a cougar in the middle of town like that, well, we have them out here too but we take exception to them eating joggers out there in public in front of God and everybody. I mean, I'm not at all against a natural method of controlling the increase in joggers, but I think they could have at least put a screen around it or something.

And then there are the mudslides. You didn't mention them, either. You can come home one day from the store or the bar and find your neighbor's property is sitting squarely on top of yours and that'll tie you up in court for years just trying to sort out the meets and bounds of the thing, much less who own what.

At least here we recognize that one of these days the Yellowstone Caldera is gonna go BANG! and just accept it. We're not into denial about natural forces like earthquakes and volcanoes and cougars and mudslides and golfers and other natural disasters like Sandiegans seem to be.

Except those of us who are the cream, art. Don't forget that part. Can't have a bowl of granola without cream.

Bobert, the big fires never come within singing distance of my place. I'm high enough above sea level that I am not worried about warming-induced sea-rise. We don't get tornados or floods, like so many folks in the Great Middle part. Least not down here. We get droughts summat but not that interrupt our lives much. We have the entire Pacific as our back yard, and Big Bear's ski resort and Idylwild's camping and about six Indian casino all within an hour's drive, more or less. We never have to wear heavy overcoats and when the really bad winter chills strike we put on light sweaters. We run the furnace maybe 8 days out of the year after sundown.

Any other questions?

I think that everything EAST of the San Andreas will fall away into...ummm...

Besides, on the other side of the Atlantic, in the Canary Islands, there's this volcano which might erupt and knock half an island into the water and send a tidal wave toward the East coast.
Whether this happen before or after Yellowstone erupts and blows away the center of the country, we don't know...but it will make little difference, 'cause global warming will make everything south of Omaha too hot to live in..............and there are asteroids whizzing about to knock off the survivors.

Oh, did I mention the increased tornados, hurricanes and the continued march of the killer bees?

I'm heading for ....ummmm... the Yukon!

Well, I dunno. Up here in Washington State, we have nice warm summers, but not too warm, and somewhat rainy winters, but not too rainy. If it isn't the boating capital of the world, it's pretty close. I don't know what the statistics are lately, but it wasn't long ago that, in Seattle, one family out of seven owned some kind of recreational boat (opening day of yachting season looks like a gathering of the fleets of the world). Puget Sound to the west of Seattle and Lake Washington to the east. Lake Union and Green Lake within the city itself. In winter, some of the world's best ski areas are within an hour's drive of Seattle. Verdant forests abound, resident pods of orca frolic in Puget Sound and California grey whales stop over to visit on their north and south migrations. Almost never any forest fires or brush fires in western Washington.

A veritable paradise on earth.

('Course we do have a couple of tectonic plates that try to shove each other around from time to time, not to mention a volcano or two. . . .)

BTW, when California falls into the ocean will that make the tides higher or lower??? Iz had the Wes Ginny Slide Rule on this for years but it ain't gettin' nowhere... I guess that 'casue it's got an East Coast bias, 'er somethin'.

They are living, Bobert, like the Egyptians, in a state of de-nile.
It is SO purty in some places out there that they just throw the dice and pray hope. Besides, a little excitement keeps one alert.

Well, ya'll know that I loves the Amos to pieces... No, not that way, gol danged it, you perverts... Yeah, we alll know they are all commies but Iz beginnin' to wonder if they is also mentally ill... Ahhhhh, not that I'm makin' no judgement one way of the other on if it's okay to be mentally ill but...

...here's the story: These people live in a part of the world that burn down (up) every year and in an area where they are all gonna drown when their house becomes part of the Specific Ocean...

Now, I know it ain't perfect here in on the slope of the Blue Ridge but I ain't too afraid of burnin' up 'er drownin' tomorrow or next week but they act as if that ain't gonna happen and we all know that it is...

So here's my question: Are they all fu*kin' nuts, 'er what???

And if yer answer is "'er what", please explain in a hunert words 'er less, thank you...

Bobert
