Bill, in a genuinely democratic system you have to trust the common people to ferret out the "kooks" on their own. Given equal and fair coverage to all contenders, I feel reasonably confident they can do that. If they can't, well, I'd rather have a democracy where mistakes are sometimes made than a pre-choreographed and pre-arranged charade of a democracy where the mistakes are central command policy.

Ha! I've been praying for years that the Earth would open up and swallow the entire Democratic and Republican party machines and they would both vanish without a trace. In the aftermath a new political system could be adopted, where:

Election campaigns are limited to 6 weeks.

All candidates are funded equally from a public purse.

All candidates get 100% equal air time to present their views.

NO on-air advertising allowed by any candidate...just show up on TV at scheduled times to debate each other and present platforms and ideas.

No polls either. Let people guess what the hell is going on if they want to and wait till election day to find out which candidate has more or less support.

No corporate sponsors. No big bucks into anyone's campaign from lobbyists or anyone else.

We don't watch television, ever; the radios are locked in to NPR. Aside from the occsional telephone survey, we aren't being bothered. Most of the mailings we get are from Democrats; the Republicans seem to have written us off, except for some daft mailings from VA attacking a candidate for state senate in NH.

Mick, if I go camp in my backyard for a couple of days in the tent with a cookstove, flashlight, a sleeping bag, and a good book, I think I can leave it behind for a few hours at a stretch. And the dogs will be thrilled to have the company.

It seems that's the only way to avoid it. Several calls a day from automated dialers add to the misery even if I don't turn on the TV or radio.

The truth is, as Mick indicates, that November will be just the beginning.

Every step Barack takes will stir up more bullshit from the stoppers, the whingers, the NIMBYs, the nay-sayers, and the plain old merchants of nihilism and chaos who are so far gone in their psychosis they would strike out a Mother Teresa if she offered them water. There are plenty of nutballs out there, some of them dressed up in suits and ties, whose vision of the future is a deep, black hole into which they want to drag themselves and all the scenery.

And they will flaunt falsehoods, erratic half-baked distortions, mis-estimated upside-down importances, bass-ackward reasoning and false associations to do their worst, just as they have tried so far.

What has worked in this election so far is refusing to get restimulated, since they really have no other power; instead, staying clear, direct, coherent, articulate and well-reasoned, and continuing to communicate steadily and honestly.

Drives 'em nuts and makes them wave their arms and jump up and down.

This is just choosing the general. The battle, whether of ideas or something denser, still lies ahead. If we're lucky the commitment in this country to free exchange f thoughts in open dialogue will prevail.

If we are not, it could get uglier. Confusion rears up and blows hard when order starts to occur, and then, after repeated repetitions of order, dies down and drains away.

It is easy to mistake this process for an explosion and a failure of reason, but it is not--it is just the first line of reaction.

Turning your country round isn't going to be quick and easy. And even if Obama wins, that's just the start, because there are going to so many pressures trying to stop any meaningful changes. And that won't just be from people labelled as political opponents, the worst of it will be from "friends".

That's how it always tends to work when "charismatic leaders" are swept to power.

Damn.... why does it fall to me to be the bearer of bad news? You may not have the campaign ads, but the politics, assuming O'bama (still can't help meself, ever since I found out the lad is Irish) are going to get downright bloody. You may count on attacks and nastiness beginning the day after the election, and it will escalate into some of the nastiest stuff you have seen yet. The only way that won't be the case is if, when it happens, the public reacts strongly and with no tolerance for it. But maybe we will get a short respite........ hope springs eternal. Ugly stuff, this rescuing, rebuilding, and restoring a nation.

What you are recommending sounds fairly similar to the way we do elections in Canada....except we would have the election on Oct 21st, after a mere 7 week campaign nationwide. That's all the time required for an election campaign, and it frees your government up to do what it's supposed to do for the rest of the year: govern.

I've thought for a long time that ALL primaries should be held on June 15, with campaigning permitted only between June 1 and June 14. Then all the conventions should be held on September 1 with ALL campaigning ending on October 21. From October 21 until election day the public would have a breather space to think and argue among themselves.

I agree wholeheartedly, but I would add that the biggest strain in any political season, especially one as intense and important (as these thigns go) as this one, is the twisting, bending, filtering and distortion of information on both sides. It is mind-boggling to see someone decided to go into a full hydrophobic foaming schpiel about an issue which in nomral times would be thrown out as insignificant, just in the hiopes they can create fear, uncertainty and doubt. These FUD manufacturers ruin the dialogue. The armwaving extremists and conspiracy-mongers are even worse but at least they are kind of obvious, like a rabid squirrel. The whole thing stains the public discourse like an old pair of wino BVDs. Dona nobis pacem, at least for a few days.
