To minimise being delayed at the bridge:

1, Check time of high tide (tables available at fishing shops, or see blackboard on the cabin at the bridge end)

2, Subtract 2 hours, this will be the first opening for that tide.

3, Add 2 hours to high tide time, this will be last opening.

The bridge opens on request on the hour & half-hour between times 2 & 3 above

BUT

This weekend being regatta as well as folk week there are likely some extra openings arranged (and paid for) by the boating folks outside these times, especially on Monday, and any opening is likely to be longer than usual due to the extra boats involved.

My rule is that if I'm planning to cross and am close enough to hear the warning bell clank, it is usually worth the run for it, though not quite always.

I would just like to say that the hour stuck on the A64 was as nothing compared to the ten minutes of lifetime spent while waiting for the bridge to close...

Good points all

I went up A19 and down from well nigh Middlesbro to get to Saltburn ff last weekend

Usually Malton Pickering from A64 to Whitby, but I do know that around York is snarled up with road works

I like to leave early, but it never happens! Also dread to think about parking, what with regatta and all. We've taken to dumping car on the clifftop park on arrival then searching for a spot when the day visitors have left. Sometimes can find a space near Goathland ;-)

Just watch out for speed cameras on the A614, especially around Bainton - it's notorious. (Oh, and kamikaze motorcyclists.)

A lot depends on time of travel. I always left early (around 8am) and never had any problems but Geoff preferred arriving in time to get into the cottage so we started leaving later in the day and then the A64 was a nightmare! We use the A19 if we decide to wait until midday to leave.

I am taking the A19 route and coming in from the top so to speak.

One thing is for certain - there will be jams........York, Malton, Pickering.......

Yes, there were delays last year, I remember now it was that fire. I see York races are on, so maybe multimap's route, up the A1(M) to the A19, almost to Teesside, then east on the A171 would be better.

Odd that Google says going via Pickering, 153m and 3hr 8min is best, while Multimap offers 174miles, 3hrs 46mins as the quickest.

Anyone know any reason not to use multimap's route.
There's nothing on http://www.trafficengland.com/trafficalerts.aspx, but then they don't mention York races either.
Ah! Arghhhh! Traffic England doesn't mention Leeds festival. That website says they are closing part of the the A64, I can't quite work out when and where. Maybe we'll go home via Market Weighton and M62. Or are there any festivals/roadworks/hippy convoys there too?

Of course it's the Leeds festival over the Bank Holiday weekend.

We did reasonably OK going round the A64 on our way to Whitby on the Friday before folk week started last year, but a vehicle on the opposite carriageway had caught fire, causing a long tailback....

I can promise you that, whichever way you are going, the A64 will be a nightmare, especially around the roundabout to Monk's Cross/Clifton Moor. We avoid it at all costs at bank holidays.

Traffic England
usually shows advanced warnings or any roadworks current roadworks and planned events. You can zoom to the area you want and it is up to the minute.

We will be driving from Cheshire to N Yorkshire tomorrow, returning Sat 29th Aug. Does anyone know of any road works or Bank Holiday events that we should detour to avoid? One year there was an Air Show near Leeds and warnings of long delays.
We would normally use the M62 the M1, A1m, A64 round York, A169 through Pickering.

This time tomorrow we'll be on our way.
