Subject: RE: BS: Plaxico Burress hires a 'prison coach' From: Bobert Date: 26 Aug 09 - 06:31 PM Well, I don't know, Richard... I didn't read that... I do know a little about the joint (jail) seein' as I used to work as a jail house teacher... Plus, I know alot of ex-cons... Prolly too many but that is another story... The guys who come in at 180 pounds and under are considered punks to be abused unless they exhibit some real martial art skills and then they are left alone... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Plaxico Burress hires a 'prison coach' From: olddude Date: 26 Aug 09 - 05:12 PM I do a ton of free work for the NFL Charities. I know many many NFL superstar players, many are close friends of mine. There are far more good people than bad in the NFL ... but the bad really comes out hard in the press and it should actually. But so should all the incredible acts of kindness that I see from most of the players and coaches. |

Subject: RE: BS: Plaxico Burress hires a 'prison coach' From: Richard Bridge Date: 26 Aug 09 - 04:20 PM But, Boberdz, wasn't someone else on this site telling me that I got my impression of the US prison system solely from the films (movies) and I was wrong, and that it was not really like that inside? Huh? Huh? |

Subject: RE: BS: Plaxico Burress hires a 'prison coach' From: Bobert Date: 26 Aug 09 - 03:20 PM Well, there are two ways to survive the prison scene when you weigh in at about 180 pounds... The first is do something stupid enough to get you solitary confinement for the duration... The other is to find the biggest and meanest sumabich and make a deal to have your poeple on the outside send money to this dude's old lady in exchange for protection... I guess that would qualify as a "prison coach"... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Plaxico Burress hires a 'prison coach' From: Ebbie Date: 26 Aug 09 - 02:11 PM Burress was interviewed on Nightline last night. I felt sorry for him. Obviously he made a whopper of a mistake carrying a loaded gun into a nightclub but just as obviously, potential repercussions never entered his head. He said he took the gun with him in order to protect himself; he said that even with bodyguards, if a gunman wants to "get you" he can. He said that a 'celebrity' is always a target. His wife is due to deliver their baby in late November and he won't be there for the event; his eyes spilled over with tears as he said that breaks his heart. This reminds me powerfully of the other thread- the Why Pack Heat one; it directly addresses the fear, rational or not, that some people feel in certain circumstances and the outcome of some measures taken against it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Plaxico Burress hires a 'prison coach' From: gnu Date: 25 Aug 09 - 03:22 PM There are far more good guys than bad guys in the NFL, but the bad guys get a lot of bad press. Of course, the jokes are just jokes. |

Subject: RE: BS: Plaxico Burress hires a 'prison coach' From: Ebbie Date: 25 Aug 09 - 02:47 PM No, Richard, we don't go to prison for shooting ourselves. 3refs is jumping over a little more information. "Plaxico Burress said in a television interview he didn't realize he'd accidentally shot himself until he saw the blood dripping onto his sneaker. "In an excerpt of an ESPN interview broadcast Monday night, the former New York Giants receiver said the shooting happened about five minutes after he entered the Latin Quarter night club in Manhattan. "I take two or three steps and like my pants are wet," Burress said in the interview. "I had some Chuck Taylor's (Converse sneakers) and I looked down and the top of my shoe is red." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/25/plaxico-burress-says-he-d_n_267973.html *************************** "Burress pleaded guilty on Thursday to weapons charges and agreed to a jail term of two years. And the lawyer for the now-suspended NFL receiver said he hired a consultant to ready him for the immense lifestyle change he'll encounter during his incarceration. "We are consulting with an expert in the field who will address and advise us, Mr. Burress and his family, on what to expect while incarcerated, and how to use his period of confinement as productively as possible," attorney Benjamin Brafman told the Post. Colleague Kevin Johnson reported in July that consultants of so-called "Prison 101" classes can earn as much as $20,000 for the services. Said prison consultant Steven Oberfest to Johnson, "I can prepare you to go into hell." "New York corrections department spokeswoman Linda Foglia said Burress, who's due for sentencing on Sept. 22, is likely to enter the maximum-security prison in Fishkill when he surrenders. "Due to his notoriety, there is a potential that he would be placed in protective custody," Foglia told the Post. "And those guys are held in single cells, with the exception of a shower, a visit, a medical visit. You're only out of your cell for eight hours a day." His full sentence is likely to be served at a medium-security facility after his evaluation period, Foglia said. http://www.nypost.com/seven/08222009/news/regionalnews/plaxicos_jailhouse_trainer_185965.htm ******************************* "The shooting occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 29 at the Latin Quarter Nightclub in Midtown. Mr. Burress entered the club past security guards with a .40-caliber Glock semiautomatic pistol tucked in the waistband of his pants. The gun was loaded and not in a holster, according to prosecutors. "Mr. Burress, who caught the winning touchdown pass in the Giants' 2008 Super Bowl victory against the New England Patriots, had a license to carry the gun in Florida, but it had expired nearly seven months before the shooting. Even if it were still valid, prosecutors said, Mr. Burress would not have been allowed to carry the weapon in New York." http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/20/burress-expected-to-plead-guilty-in-weapons-case/ |

Subject: RE: BS: Plaxico Burress hires a 'prison coach' From: Rapparee Date: 25 Aug 09 - 01:52 PM Or this guy. What the article doesn't mention is going home one weekend and finding his mother dead on the floor, or practicing weight training by using barbells made of manhole covers because he couldn't afford dumbbells. |

Subject: RE: BS: Plaxico Burress hires a 'prison coach' From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 25 Aug 09 - 01:27 PM I can see why someone heading for prison would want to learn a bit about proper prison behavior and such, but hiring a "coach" does seem a bit excessive. Surely there've been books written on the subject. All he'd need to do is read one or two of them... Wait a minute, we're talking about Plaxico Burress, here... Okay, he'd have to hire someone to read them to him anyway. What the hell? Might as well go ahead and hire the coach. |

Subject: BS: Plaxico Burress hires a 'prison coach' From: 3refs Date: 25 Aug 09 - 12:02 PM Plaxico Burress has hired a "prison coach". So says an article in The Turo, Toro, Tera(still have a hard time spitting out the name of that city) Sun, by Bill Lankhof "Plaxico Burress has hired a "prison coach" to prepare him for his two-year prison sentence, the one he got for shooting himself. Now, football players may not have a reputation for being the smartest people but a prison coach? What's to learn here? How hard can it be to figure out what "Hands Up" and "Spread 'Em" mean?" I say, to keep him from ending up dead! Saying or doing the wrong thing in prison, that you might think is quite innocent, could put you in a body bag! I think it's a smart move and one that could likely save his life, or at the very least a severe beating! I'd suggest that Bill stick to reporting on things he might know something about or do some research. That way when "Bubba" says "bend over Bill" it won't come as too much of a surprise! |
