Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: Big Mick Date: 18 Jul 11 - 12:14 PM While I am disappointed for our women's team, I congratulate this determined team from Japan. They ground it out with determination, grit, and the skills that brought them to this match. It was their moment in time and they owned it. The match was excellent, the teams validated why they made it their, and the best team that day won the match. A hearty congratulations to the victors. All the best, Mick |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: catspaw49 Date: 18 Jul 11 - 11:33 AM Yeah.......forgot about that one. On the other hand I don't mind a bit of voyeurism on my part. They might but I could dig it! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: Brakn Date: 18 Jul 11 - 05:30 AM I thought WC was waste channel. You live and learn. |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: MGM·Lion Date: 18 Jul 11 - 03:01 AM "...saw them in the WC" is an unfortunate usage here, Spaw. WC means water-closet, another of the legion of terms for 'lavatory, privy, bathroom, toilet, loo, comfort station, restroom, O-O ...' If you were watching the Japanese women's team there, you must be a bit of a voyeur?! ~M~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: catspaw49 Date: 17 Jul 11 - 11:54 PM The first time I saw the Japanese team I said they would be damn tough to beat.......and that was awhile back when they were playing here in the States. The first game I saw them in the WC Iwas impressed all to hell with their ball handling. Today the American side just didn't play up to their usual high standard although they hung in with their "heart attack" style. Had they scored on any of those early attempts it might have been different. Both teams provided a good show and if we couldn't win then I was happy to see it go to Japan.......they need a boost. Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: gnu Date: 17 Jul 11 - 06:49 PM Well now! I am glad I got out of bed today. I never knew that bit about the penalty box! I was just applying hockey rules to football.... dumbass Canuck that I am. Thanks JotSC. And, yes, it was a hell of a game... so much so that neighbours were looking at me thru the living room window jumping around and hollering. Not that they found it out of place, mind you, as I tend to get "enthusiastic" about sporting events. Once a jock, always a jock. What a great game. Well done Japan! |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 17 Jul 11 - 06:30 PM Gnu--it wasn't a penalty kick because the foul took place just outside the penalty box. Another foot or so closer, it would have been a penalty kick. It may not have made a difference considering that the Japanese goalkeeper stopped three in the shootout. All in all, one hell of a match! Kudos to the referee for generally staying out of the way of play. |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: gnu Date: 17 Jul 11 - 05:30 PM WOW! Anyone who thinks women's football is any less excting than men's football is just plain wrong! That was one of the best games I have seen in years. Aggravating as hell to see the Yanks change strategey to their detriment, TWICE!!!, but it was riveting. One question.... that red card... why wasn't that a penalty kick? She was topped, plain and simple. Even if the ref couldn't see the top, why was it not a penalty kick? |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: gnu Date: 17 Jul 11 - 03:50 PM Wow... exciting! The score should be at least 2 nil USA but a certain blonde ball hog may pass the ball yet. The Yanks are well outplaying Japan but just can't seem to pull the trigger while aiming well. And, yes, I DO know it's a ball and it doesn't always bounce "perfectly". As for the technical ability of passing well it seems Japan are rattled at the moment but I expect that will change after the half. GO USA! |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: ranger1 Date: 17 Jul 11 - 02:43 PM I was lucky enough to see four games in the 2003 World Cup. One of the matches was the US against Norway, a rivalry matching that of the Celtics/Lakers or Red Sox/Yankees. As a US citizen having lived in Norway, that was a great game, especially when the US beat them. I don't have many fond memories of my three years in Norway, so it made the victory that much sweeter. What I was sorry to find out was that, because of that defeat, Norway was knocked out of the Olympics the following year. Like I said, it's one of the best rivalries in sports, in my opinion, and it was too bad not to see them play each other in the Olympics. |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: gnu Date: 17 Jul 11 - 12:09 PM What about The British Open? Oh, yeah, right, sorry. I was mistaken in my OP... the game is at 2:30 EST. |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: michaelr Date: 17 Jul 11 - 01:09 AM It is the World Cup - but it is only the womens' World Cup. I think the lack of buzz is because the womens' game is still not taken as seriously as it should be. I've heard commentators say several times throughout the tournament that this or that country's womens' team does not get much support and/or money from their federations. There is also the fact that media attention in the US, not too focused on soccer to begin with, is cyclical in the sense that the big showcase tournaments - the World Cup and the Olympics - are each four years apart, but follow each other (the Olympics are next year). So in effect there are always two years of no major action, and the attention wanders elsewhere. On the other hand, there is the huge factor that there is hardly anything else happening in sports right now... |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: gnu Date: 16 Jul 11 - 07:27 PM I agree michaelr... the Japanese appear technically superior at ball possesion. But, I think that the Yanks have that spirit that just drives them when it's down to the wire and that's when technicians get their ass grassed. In any case, I expect and hope for a great game no matter the outcome. But, I shall be cheering for my neighbours and welcoming either as victor in this monumental sporting finale. It IS the World Cup. Seems odd to me this is the first thread devoted to it here even tho this is a music forum. |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: michaelr Date: 16 Jul 11 - 07:15 PM I hope the better team prevails. And that may well be Japan. They have shown their passing game and ball possession to be superior toall rivals - areas in which the US have trouble. It will be exciting! |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 16 Jul 11 - 03:17 PM Mick, I thought it a left-wing conspiracy because the mistakes were almost equally assessed. LOL even heartier. |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: gnu Date: 16 Jul 11 - 03:02 PM I really enjoyed Sweden's win. Welllll... after the game, I enjoyed watching all the Swedish girls jumping up and down, up and down, up and down... it was so nice to see the smiles on their faces. >;-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: Big Mick Date: 16 Jul 11 - 02:38 PM Why on earth would you say such a thing, John. You know I am a left wing liberal who would NEVER criticize like that!! Oh the horrors of the this win-lose proposition!! I believe I feel the vapours coming on. I am certain, suh, bad officiating is nought but a capitalist conspiracy carried out by right wingers... LOL. Mick |

Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 16 Jul 11 - 02:27 PM Agree and Agree. "And I will be very happy for the victors. All that is predicated on a fair calling of the match by the officials." You didn't like the crew working the USA/Brazil semi? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: Big Mick Date: 16 Jul 11 - 02:20 PM I hope first and foremost for a well fought match. I will be rooting for the US women. And I will be very happy for the victors. All that is predicated on a fair calling of the match by the officials. All the best, Mick |

Subject: BS: Well done Sweden; GO USA! From: gnu Date: 16 Jul 11 - 01:48 PM I had to start a new thread rather than put this in the football thread to notify those who may not be following the FIFA Womens' World Cup that USA plays Japan at 2PM EST Tomorrow in the final. GO USA!!! Although I will be happy for Japan if they prevail, of course. They could use a little "boost" back home in light of the recent and ongoing disater. |
