Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: Nick Dow Date: 29 Sep 25 - 03:20 PM Yes, you will get a one finger piano rendition. They are MP3 files. A bit big but I'll send them by We Transfer. They have proved very popular. If you PM me with an Email or if you prefer contact Clive I'll take it from there. It will take me all of three minutes so not a big job. |

Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: GUEST,Ed Date: 28 Sep 25 - 07:48 PM May I ask a question regarding the mp3s? Are they someone singing each tune, someone playing it on piano, guitar or whatever, or are they recorded midi files? If it's the latter, I'd personally find the original midi files far more useful but that's just me. Many thanks, Ed |

Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: Nick Dow Date: 18 Sep 25 - 02:47 AM With Joe's help, I have made an enquiry to a publishing house in the US with a view to re-printing and distribution of the series. I had a very pleasant reply, so I hope Clive can make an agreement and expand our readership. Onward and upward! |

Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: Steve Gardham Date: 15 Sep 25 - 12:23 PM I think Clive is hoping to sell copies to the youngsters who weren't around when the first and second editions were issued. This new run will not contain anything fresh on the second edition (apart from the cover and an update to the acknowledgements). As for size the EFDSS edition is exactly the same size as the later volumes. I sent him a doctored 17th century woodcut for the cover but whether he's using it I don't yet know. |
|
Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Sep 25 - 09:46 PM That's a sneaky thing about the Marrowbones series. They're all the same size and have matching cover designs, so I have to have each volume as it comes out. The trouble is, the first volume was Marrow Bones (Malcolm Douglas, Steve Gardham, Frank Purslow) was published by EFDSS in 2007 with a different cover, and I bought that edition. A new edition will be published by Boutle with a matching cover, but can I really justify buying it just so the cover will match? Ah, decisions, decisions. But it's a wonderful series and I highly recommend it. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: Steve Gardham Date: 22 Jul 25 - 12:35 PM Hi Joe, Okay, regarding Wanton Seed, was meant to be a follow-up to Marrow Bones and Malcolm did most of the work on correcting the scores and texts. However, he passed before the notes could be completed so I finished the book off complete with historic notes. Having sent it to EFDSS it sat on a shelf somewhere for several years until a friend of Malcolm's, Ron Day in Sheffield decided to get it done as a memorial to Malcolm and he found the publisher, Boutles. Having published this Ron then got together those of us interested in carrying on with the project, Nick, Graham Pratt and myself and then the next omnibus volume was produced. Nick then suggested we make a further selection from the Hammond-Gardiner Mss and that became Southern Songster. By then Graham had had to drop out and Nick brought in Cohen to do the setting and Nick took charge of the 2 Secret Songster volumes. We have already started on a Lincolnshire volume which will include many from the out-of print Percy Grainger material, and songs collected more recently by Mo Ogg and Ruairidh Greig (Who contributed to the current volume). Carol Dawson of Folklincs, a wonderful folk entrepreneur/fiddler/teacher has offered to select the songs this time but Nick, Cohen and I will provide our usual contributions. After that, Lancashire has been suggested, as there isn't an in-print collection in the same format. |

Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Jul 25 - 12:59 AM Thanks, Steve. I suspected that Marrow Bones (Malcolm Douglas, Steve Gardham, Frank Purslow 2007) was the first in the series. I've got that one, too. This is a remarkable project, and I wanted to support it. Can you tell us more about the Marrow Bones series of English Folk Songs? Marrow Bones was revised with new notes and commentaries by Malcolm Douglas and Steve Gardham and published by EFDSS in 2007. The revised Wanton Seed has the same credits, published by Boutle in 2015. Steve Gardham and Nick Dow are responsible for most or all of the others. But Steve, can you tell us more about who's doing what? What's next? -Joe- P.S. Did you get my suggestion about a U.S. publisher? |
|
Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: Steve Gardham Date: 21 Jul 25 - 02:42 PM Joe, you're missing the first in the series originally produced by EFDSS but Clive is working on a new edition which will almost be a facsimile of the EFDSS edition with new cover in the style of the Boutle editions, as Nick says. Nick, I've sent Clive a possible cover print refashioned from a cut in the Pepys Collection. It shows the husband stood on the river bank with his wife splashing about in the river. I've had to doctor it somewhat but it's the best fit. My first effort from a Marrow Bones broadside showed a woman beating her husband and Clive understandably didn't want to use this one. However, if anyone has a better offer, of an appropriate cut from the 17th/18th century, we'd be glad of it. |

Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: Steve Gardham Date: 02 Jul 25 - 03:10 PM Thanks for that info, Ray. I feel I've made a faux-pas in the book acknowledgments re Jim. As we hadn't heard from him for at least a decade, I assumed not unreasonably that he was no longer with us. He was in his late 80s even then and must be just about tonning up by now. Wow! If you get to communicate with him please send him my best wishes. Mick's singing will hopefully live on on our website and on the Whitby pirate ship! Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: Steve Gardham Date: 09 Jun 25 - 02:40 PM Still awaiting a correction from Cohen to one of the scores, otherwise Clive was going to press today. I have done at least half a dozen proof readings but none of us are perfect so if anyone spots a glaring error please let me or Clive know and we can correct it in a subsequent rerun. Just for the record, the original Marrow Bones was a shambles, even though many of us bought it and learnt songs from it. Frank sent EFDSS the first proof and impatient Peter Kennedy went to press without consulting Frank, so not his fault. Malcolm and I spent 2 weeks in Cecil Sharp House archives before they were all on the internet and went through everything with a fine-tooth comb before publishing the second edition, and just the fact that MD was on the case would be enough for most people. |

Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: Nick Dow Date: 09 Jun 25 - 01:35 PM Yes this is the 'Marrowbones. series. Clive is hopefully adding the original 'Marrowbones book to the collection in the foreseeable future. |

Subject: RE: A Yorkshire Songster new book available (Gardham) From: Steve Gardham Date: 30 May 25 - 02:28 PM Just to be clear, the bulk of the songs come from the Hudleston Collection and were previously published in 2001 no longer available. The book contained a number of flaws in its transcriptions and we have gone back to original recordings to transcribe the selected songs. 18 of the songs come from the repertoire of the great Arthur Wood of Littlebeck and some of these were released on a double CD by Mustrad from recordings made by Colin Wharton in 1962. Although a lot of the songs come from the Esk valley we have balanced this where possible with songs from other parts of Yorkshire, notably from Ruairidh Greig's recordings around Sheffield in the early 70s and my own East Riding recordings made in the 60s and 70s. Some of the songs came from the Yorkshire Garland website, naturally. |

Sincerely, Gargoyle I just donated 5 foot self space of old, classic fishing books to an institution ... to make room more music. |

Subject: A Yorkshire Songster new book available From: Nick Dow Date: 22 May 25 - 10:39 AM Yorkshire has been noted as a ‘singing’ county and this has been reflected in the excellent musical collections published by Frank Kidson. The post war song collections, however, have not been so well represented. In this new book Steve Gardham has selected over a hundred folk songs, some previously published and others from out-of-print and scarce collections. The main sources are the collections of Mary and Nigel Hudleston, Steve Gardham and Ruairidh Greig. Musical notation has been provided by Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne and comprehensive notes have been supplied by Steve Gardham and Nick Dow. A Yorkshire Songster now takes its rightful place alongside the best musical anthologies. https://francisboutle.co.uk/products/a-yorkshire-songster/ |
