Subject: RE: Obit: Bruce Murdoch (Peace, 999, #) 2026 From: GUEST,Amergin/Nathan Tompkins Date: 17 Jun 26 - 06:24 PM Shit. Bruce was one of the kindest people I knew. Many years ago, I got in a bit of legal trouble, and he was there to make sure I was doing okay-checking in on me. Farewell, old friend. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bruce Murdoch (Peace, 999, #) 2026 From: Big Al Whittle Date: 16 Jun 26 - 04:39 PM I just thought he was great. I loved hearing from him and it broke my heart when he dispensed with Mudcat. He was talented and intelligent, and I don't think he found it easy to entertain some of the rather self indulgent weirdnesses of the Brit folkscene. As the Brits spread themselves over Mudcat. I've been missing him since he left mudcat. So I suppose, this makes it final. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bruce Murdoch (Peace, 999, #) 2026 From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Jun 26 - 09:35 PM Bruce knew a lot of stuff and a lot of people. Over 20 years or more, I tried to draw what I could from him and have him post it at Mudcat. He posted a lot of stuff here, but not always in a way that the rest of us could do anything with it. He made some recordings and some were very good, but I found only one song on his YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@brucemurdoch6609/videos One of Bruce's charms was that he was confoundingly independent in the work he did - and he did a lot of it. I enjoyed doing battle with him all these years and I really liked him - but it was a battle. Bruce, may you rest in peace. I've enjoyed all these years of sparring. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bruce Murdoch (Peace, 999, #) 2026 From: Waddon Pete Date: 14 Jun 26 - 10:40 AM Bruce was a fine musician and long time member of the Mudcat Forum. We exchanged a number of posts and he was always helpful, humourous and knowledgeable. I shall be putting one of his CDs on soon and toasting his memory. I shall miss him. I have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread and send my condolences to all those who know and love him. RIP. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bruce Murdoch (Peace, 999, #) 2026 From: GUEST,Noah Zacharin Date: 14 Jun 26 - 01:24 AM Saddest. Just heard this news today from my dear friend Penny Rose... I was a Bruce Murdoch fan from the age of 15, when I first saw him perform, shortly after I started playing the Montreal clubs. Smitten by his songs and stage persona, I was grateful to soon become something of a friend. The day I told him I always thought of him as an elusive uncle and he replied that he always thought of me as a younger brother was a good day. We went on to share the stage a few times--me in my favourite role: 2nd guitarist--and even co-wrote 4/5 of a song that now I have to finish. A few weeks ago I purchased a copy of his book online, hoping the love would reach him. He will be missed and always present. The fireflies have arrived--light in the darkness. I think of him... |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bruce Murdoch (Peace, 999, #) 2026 From: cnd Date: 13 Jun 26 - 02:43 PM Though I never met Bruce personally, we talked extensively over email and Mudcat -- almost 200 messages from 2020 to 2022, not to mention discussions on Mudcat threads where we were both on the hunt for the same song or lyric request. He was an incredibly well-read and knowledgeable man, very eager to share stories, information, and especially a few recipes. But also incredibly humble: as Jeri mentioned, he disliked being in the spotlight later in life. He mailed me a copy of his CD, "Sometimes I Wonder Why The World"; I'll have to dig it out and give it a listen. |

I did keep in touch with him, most recently about three weeks ago. I got word yesterday morning that he'd passed away at age 78. I'd been scrambling trying to find Mandy's contact information and here it was from Mike. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bruce Murdoch (Peace, etc) 2026 From: Jeri Date: 12 Jun 26 - 08:13 PM I remember, just about every bit of personal news he'd tell me about was preface with "don't tell foks on Mudcat, but...." He definitely didn't like being the news. He was a good friend I hadn't seen for a few years. First, it was the the expense, then, it was the car. I wasn't sure he'd wanted visitors more recently I hope he was happy with his life. he did an awful lot of good for Mudcat that folks may not know about, because he was so fond of anonymity Goodbye, my friend. Thanks for everything.. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bruce Murdoch (Peace, etc) 2026 From: Mark Ross Date: 12 Jun 26 - 04:26 PM Damn, another friend done gone. When I hit Greenwich Village in 1967, Bruce was one of the first people I ran into. He was friendly and took me to the Kettle of Fish for my first of many beers in that establishment. He was an inspiration and a dynamic performer. I ran into him when I played in Montreal in the '70's, nobody showed up for my first night so I headed down to where he was playing. He almost fell of his chair when I walked in. We would communicate here on the 'Cat from time to time. It's hell to get old, what can I say. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Bruce Murdoch (Peace, etc) 2026 From: meself Date: 12 Jun 26 - 03:49 PM Sad news; Bruce was one of the good ones. I'd noticed his contributions here becoming fewer and farther between over the past year or two .... I met Bruce when we were both members of a team of markers of high-school diploma English exams in Alberta, which entailed some discussion and argument - but I recognized his name, because I had become principal of the school in which he had previously taught, and mail addressed to Bruce would occasionally cross my desk. Years later, we met again on Mudcat, and it wasn't till then that I learned, gradually, of his place and stature in the 'Folk' scene, and that through the comments of others. I seem to vaguely recall him butting heads with one or two people on here, but I always felt his heart was in the right place. Btw, another of his handles was the "#" sign. RIP, Bruce. |
