Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Young Highland Rover From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 01 Aug 00 - 03:01 AM I'm not racing to do much of anything,... least of all for the aquisition of an incredibly expensive book! I think Hovey is fine for now, and besides, if the origional tune is there, then I'm content enough. I don't mind creating 'arrangements' around traditional tunes, I love to do it and have to hold myself back. Did you know that Hovey was unable to move his fingers to write the score? He communicated with his son via "computer, a home made letter board, teeth clicks, eye blinks, and mysterious ways known only to father and son". I find the process remarkable! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Young Highland Rover From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 31 Jul 00 - 07:57 PM Great Work! They have several copies I hope? It's the sort of book you'd want to lend out and still be able to referrence, while having another squirelled away for safe keeping. ...I Wish..... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Young Highland Rover From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 31 Jul 00 - 06:52 PM I just looked for a used copy at www.bookfinder.com, but none were listed. Keep looking every once in a while. None of the reprint edition of 'Scots Musical Museum' either. Try your local library, or better, a university library if there's one in your vicinity. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Young Highland Rover From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 31 Jul 00 - 06:21 PM The few statements I've seen by Serge Hovey on tunes for Burns' songs didn't impress me very much. I still like James Dick's 'The Songs of Robert Burns', of which I have the reprint edition. I also have Prof. Kinsley's 3 vol. edition of Burns' Songs and Poems, but for songs and their tunes I haven't noted where it added anything of importance to Dick's work. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Young Highland Rover From: Thomas the Rhymer Date: 31 Jul 00 - 05:57 PM Hi, and thanks again Bruce....says here that Serge Hovey, who researched and arranged this recording, preferred the first two stanza submission. Burns later became dissatisfied with it and submitted another. MORAG is the tune! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Young Highland Rover From: GUEST,Bruce O. Date: 31 Jul 00 - 05:44 PM Almost the same as in 'The Scots Musical Museum', #143 (1788) where the tune is "Morag" (English, 'Marion'). In SMM that last four lines of the 2 verses are denoted 'chorus', and have a 2nd stain of the tune for them. For an earlier copy of the tune see the Scots tune index on my website. |
