Richie Black - you're certainly right, they've always advocated non-violence and have been very active promoting mutual understanding. But have you read Tommy's autobiography? It provides some interesting info on what it took to reach that attitude.

I asked Ben Sands, brother of Tommy and Colum and Anne, if Bobby was any relation. He told me that they did not know of a direct connection, but being that they are from the same region, he figured there was one way back.

I would wager a bet that all the Sands are connected no matter which country they are located in.
Jon,
This is very strange. I just put my guitar down after singing "There Were Roses",then connected to Mudcat and here is the song being mentioned.
Here I am living in Quebec for the last 40 years plus wishing i was home in the Atlantic Provinces and crying over Irish songs.
I have a very strong connection to Ireland but that is for another time.

I bet quite a few James Connolly's were shot around 1916. Sadly.

I would like to see the title of this thread changed.

There is absolutely NO connection with the Sands family and Robert Gerard Sands. The Sands Family are very well known in County Down, I met their parents Mick (Chief as he was known) and Bridie, several times whilst visiting family in Ireland, great people.

Bridie was from a famous family in Warrenpoint County Down, called Connolly. She went through the same thing "are you related to James Connolly who was shot in 1916".

The family love their Gaelic football, but never had any connections with republicanism.

I believe the hunger striker Booby may have been a distant relative, I don't believe there is an IRA connection though, the Sands Family including Bobby and Colum Sands are a very talented bunch from Northern Ireland

There is also the former Tory politician Duncan Sandys (different spelling, same pronunciation).

About nine years ago, I asked Ben Sands if he was any relation to Bobby Sands. He said as far as he knew, they were not, but as the name was the same and they were from the same general area, it was likely there was a connection back somewhere.

Jon: I've always thought 'Humpty Dumpty Was Pushed' was about not believing everything you are taught and told - but that sometimes it is healthier not to let on you don't ...

Collum Sands wrote (and sings) "The last house in our street", one of the best songs to come out of 'the troubles'.

Nice article and Then There Were Roses is IMO a truely great song.

Thinking of Tommy Sands though, can anyone explain "Humpty Dumpty" (was pushed) to me.

Jon

Actually, I asked Tommy last year, and he said Bobby was a distant cousin of theirs.

Hallo lads. Does anybody know if there is any connection between Irish Music Band The Sands Family, and one of IRA leaders - Bobby Sands, who died in Long Cash prison after the hunger strike in 1981 ? Please let me know at snori@polbox.com Best Regards Snori
