Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: GUEST Date: 03 Aug 01 - 06:29 PM Had mine for most of the last thirty years. Hot in summer but nice in winter. Does not, by the way, totally eliminate shaving, as the edges are otherwise very scruffy looking. It comes in handy with historical re-enacting (US Civil War period). As a bonus, also hides the fact that my chin has multiplied since I last saw it. CC |

Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Kim C Date: 03 Aug 01 - 02:26 PM Well, to update my original post here from months ago... Mister did trim the goatee into a nice Vandyke but shaved it all off to be more 18th century fashionable, as we were doing some 18th century events. Makes him look a lot younger but I liked the goatee. He may grow it back when it gets colder. He's working on that Picard Pompadour, too. :-) |

The third time I drizzled syrup into the thing, I decided, "Okay, That's it!" and I shaved it off. One year later, my supervisor at work said, "Hey, Don, I just noticed! When did you shave off your beard?" Very alert was my supervisor. My general hair configuration is clean-shaven, topped with something more or less similar to the Captain Jean-Luc Picard pompadour. Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Brían Date: 03 Aug 01 - 01:19 PM When I was younger I typically had longer hair and/or a beard. Now I have short hair and no beard. I can blame the short hair on my wife who seems to prefer it that way. I shaved the beard when all the gray started coming in. I find shorter hair is easier to take care of. although my appearance has changed, my values have not. i have been cornered more than once at a party by someone, based on my appearance, tried to inflame a political discussion with me and was surprised to find I was probably more left-thinking than they were. Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: SharonA Date: 03 Aug 01 - 01:01 PM I'm another one of those women who love a mustache and beard on a man. Kisses are lots more fun when they tickle, too! Gimme a man with facial hair, chest hair, down-there hair, and if he's bald I don't care! (I think bald is sexy too) Stubble, on the other hand, is a no-no: causes rashes for the lady when brushed against her cheek – eek!. Stubble can be dangerous, also; I once had my cornea scratched by chin stubble (true story!). I once had a boyfriend with a simply lovely set of facial hair *sigh* Then he went to work at a nuclear reactor, and had to shave so his face-mask would seal properly... then I found out he had no chin to speak of! :^( THEN the Three-Mile Island incident happened, and he claimed he was working at the OTHER reactor (#!) at the time, but my theory is that it was his revenge for having been made to expose his chin to the world. Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Amos Date: 03 Aug 01 - 09:41 AM Well, cellos, now, Vlad, mature veeeeery slowly. So if yours has started puberty it is probably several hundred years old. In fact it may be the first cello in history to have survived long enough to reach adolescence. They go through a period of crankiness and rebelliousness, I understand. Continued application of love and patience and endless tuning will have its rewards, and your cello will mature into a resbectable, balanced bass. The chin hairs on your violin, however, are a different story. This is an indication that your violin has been seeing someone else behind your back. I suggest counseling. A |

Since then I too have been clean-shaven. I'm tempted by a beard now that age is catching up and the distinguished grey look appeals, but there are too many bald patches on my face and neck so I look like a scraggy tomcat after a week of not shaving. |

Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Terry K Date: 20 Oct 00 - 03:31 AM I grew my beard when I was 19, as soon as it would grow properly. It was a terribly bohemian thing to do in those days - people would say how brave I was - BRAVE??? Many years later, I worked for an American company in London and was asked to shave it off as it didn't fit the clean-cut American boy image. I was told that I could keep it if I wanted to, but whenever client contact was required, they would send someone else. As at the time my client contacts were in various fun parts of the world, it seemed an appropriate time to shave it off - sold my soul! When my wife first saw me sans beard, she said "Ugh, it's awful". You have to think a little about the way she phrased that. But only a little. I later left the company (though not the wife) and grew it again. Then last year I was at a formal function in Bali, for which they had tailored me Balinese evening dress. This consists of a jacket, two skirts and a headband. I was down to "designer stubble" by then but simply couldn't relate wearing both a skirt and a beard so off it came. No, the beard. I now wet-shave every day and find it quite stimulating, due to the various modern unctions available. How long it will last I don't know. Cheers, Terry |

I bet many more bearded 'catters' have read the thread and not dipped in. I wonder what this says about the sociological makeup of male 'Catters' or would it be 'Folkies' in general. Have beard will like music etc etc. I must confess I've shaved three times in 30 years - each time was for a job interview - got the jobs then grew the beard again. Have this one 25 years. He had to shave it once to wear a gas mask while doing field work for his employers and my mother was so bothered by it she wouldn't speak to him until it grew back. He's a handsome guy but doesn't have quite enough chin, so he looks better in a beard. Personally, I like beards. Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: MudGuard Date: 18 Oct 00 - 06:31 AM I wear a beard since I finished my army duty - I am just too lazy to shave (apart from the danger I am in if I use a sharp knife in my face before getting really awake). Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Mark Cohen Date: 18 Oct 00 - 01:52 AM Wait a minute...back there did 'Spaw apologize for being weird? Isn't that like winter apologizing for being cold? Actually, 'Spaw, I know what you mean about shaving. I grew a beard when I moved to Oregon in 1982, because I wanted to look like an Oregonian. Shaved it in 1989 when I did a singing workshop with Susan Osborn and it felt like I was entering a new age. (Little did I know...) During the next few years I used a shaving brush and Kiss My Face soap in a Mexican mug, which probably had lead in it so I didn't drink from it. I really enjoyed that ritual. The beard came back when I moved back to Oregon in 1991 after getting married. Then after one of our first really bad fights I decided to shave it as a symbol of my determination to be a new person (back when I was still convinced that all the troubles in my marriage were my fault). Only thing is, I had a two-year-old daughter at the time, who spent the next 3 days going around saying "Daddy scared me!" During that time, though, I made my first and only entry onto the stage. Now, though I live in a place where it's usually between 70 and 85 degrees year round, I'm still hairy, though all the reddish threads among the brown have turned white. And in case you missed it, that was an oblique reference to an old song, thus qualifying this as a musical thread. So there. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Jimmy C Date: 18 Oct 00 - 01:34 AM I grew a full beard when I was 24 and have had one ever since, although it's now a goateee. (helps eliminate some of the whiteness). At my wedding( 32 years ago) an aunt of my wife threatened to boycott the mass because I looked like a hippie, she would only attend if I was clean shaven. She sure missed a great wedding. I don't know why I originally grew one, I may have been under the influence of "The Dubliners" at the time and being a banjo player I wanted to look like a folksinger, although even without the music I suspect I still would have grown one. I did shave it off about 7 years ago but my wife insisted I grow it back, which I did. There was story about George Bernard Shaw who was shaving one day and a young boy asked him why he shaved, he apparently could not give the child an answer, so he threw the razor away and never shaved again, I believe this is a true story but cannot vouch for it. My beard is as much a part of me as my hands, eyes and ears, I guess I'll just keep it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Hotspur Date: 18 Oct 00 - 12:17 AM My dad has practiced a semiannual ritual ever since i can remember: At the autumnal equinox, he starts growing a beard for the winter months. On his birthday, April 13 (or sometimes on the vernal equinox if he's feeling lazy) he shaves it off for the summer. Cool in summer, warm in winter--makes perfect sense to me, although the first time I see him after he shaves is usually a bit of a shock, and makes me think of Mr. Pickwick... |
Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: sophocleese Date: 17 Oct 00 - 11:45 PM Well I've never had a beard but at the age of 30 I decided to have a Mohawk cut. So I spent a summer shaving my head, not an electric razor by the way, and learning to do it by touch without looking in the mirror. One day I decided that since I never bothered to shave my legs why the hell was I wasting time shaving my head. So I grew my hair back. I sympathize with anyone who grows a beard because they hate shaving. |
Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Troll Date: 17 Oct 00 - 11:30 PM I have a goatee. It is mostly white. I grew it because I wanted to and if I ever decide to shave it, I will. My Wife complained about it so in 1996 I shaved it off as a Christmas present. She doesn't celebrate Christmas but I do. Anyhow, two days later she asked me to grow it back because "You don't look like you". She never did say who the hell I looked like and I never asked. There are some things that it's just better not to know. troll |

Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: ddw Date: 17 Oct 00 - 10:09 PM Rather attached to a beard myself. Grew my first one in 1964 after I got the OK from my squadron exec, but the squadron commander made me shave it as soon as my leave was over. Grew it again in 1966, shaved it off for one day in 1968 (I was in a weddng party and the bride's mother told me it looked "dirty") and I've had it ever since. My wife has a fit if I threaten to shave it off — which I sometimes do because it's mostly white now and makes me look my age. david |

Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Rich(bodhránai gan ciall) Date: 17 Oct 00 - 09:22 PM I usually star a beard in late September and save in April. It just seems to got that way. During the summer I might get lazy and go a little while without shaving. The one big exception is I pretty much always shave fo funerals and viewings. (Sure enough, if I have to shave in January or February for a funeral I know it's gonna get 10 degrees colder and the wind's gonna blow harder than it had been all winter.) A friend of mine a couple years ago saw me clean-shaven and asked "Who died?". It was intended as a joke but I had actually been to see somebody laid out earlier that day. Ok, enough morbid stuff. Somebody tell a nice beard anecdote. Rich |
Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 17 Oct 00 - 07:21 PM I never grew a beard. I just stopped shaving and the hair kept growing. Sometimes I trim bits off the end.
Nobody ever seems to ask why people grow hair on the top of their heads instead of shaving it off every day. Some people do just that, and good luck to them, but most of us don't.

Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Rex Date: 17 Oct 00 - 05:53 PM Alright, I had to jump in when I saw this. When Allen and Bill stayed at EJ's during their Mudcat Adventure this Summer, I came by and after we had been visiting and playing tunes for awhile someone noticed. All the guys had hairy faces. Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: catspaw49 Date: 17 Oct 00 - 05:45 PM Seemingly, as usual, the odd man out...............I don't have a beard. Two reasons. first, hard as this may be to believe, I LIKE to shave. I always feel clean, its kinda' invigorating, just have always enjoyed the feel. I'll go a couple of days sometimes and then its really enjoyable. Yeah, I know.....weird. Sorry. Reason TWO: By all odds I have the shittiest looking beard on the face of the planet although there may be something living underground that looks worse. Its very uneven, being heavy in some spots and light in others and it all grows at vastly different rates. Then there's the colors....that's plural...as in brown, blonde, red, black, and of course now gray. The times I've tried the beard thing, I feel greasy and look shitty. Not my bag at all. The rest of you all seem to look Ok except for the girls, and I'm sure a few of them may have a better looking beard than I do. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Matt_R Date: 17 Oct 00 - 05:40 PM 'S truth Brett. When I don't shave (which is frequently) and my hair is long (long by my standards is not the same as yours! Long in my book is when my USMC regulation high & tight has grown if for a month) I look like an OLD guy! Like someone's history professor or something. But then when I DO shave, trim the goatee down really short, and get my head buzzed, I look like I'm 16-year-old kid again (which isn't so bad, it was only 5 years ago!). Just something about being follicsome... |

Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Naemanson Date: 17 Oct 00 - 05:26 PM My beard makes me look older when it's long but younger when it's trimmed short. I have it on good authority that women like the feeling of the beard rubbing on their thighs and belly. |

Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: MMario Date: 17 Oct 00 - 05:15 PM My beard varies with the seasons of the year and the centuries. Of course the century I live in varies with the season of the year, so that makes sense. Currently pretty complete beard, the chin will be going naked shortly leaving me with muttonchops connected with a mustache. January will see the sideburns vanish, goatee return. August the goatee expands to cover most of the face. |
Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: InOBU Date: 17 Oct 00 - 04:59 PM Well, I've had a beard for over 25 years. The other day, I was asked to pose for an advertisement for glasses for SENIOR CITIZENS! I'm in my effin fourties! The beard is white, ya see... so I did the add, then out came the razor. My wife had only seen me once without a beard. She laughed for several days, however I now look much younger, not an intirely good thing, but also folks think I have lost wieght - because they no something is different but cant place it, and in the US looseing weight is good, while an elderly friend from the slums of Limmerick thinks I have gained wieght, becuase gaining wieght looks healthy when you are from the old slums of limmerick... So, well, for what it is worth, I suppose I will have to send in a new mudcat photograph... Larry |
Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Haruo Date: 17 Oct 00 - 04:48 PM I've had a beard off and on for years. Sometimes full, sometimes short, sometimes with big 'burns, sometimes not, sometimes with moustache like here, sometimes w/o. At the moment I have a fairly long tuft on my chin, but shaved cheeks and lips; I'm told I look "Quaker" or "Almost Amish". On the other hand, in this photo from 1892 I had huge sideburns but a shaved strip in the middle where the beard now is. There's a noticeable but not predominant amount of grey in it, whereas my head hair is almost 100% the colour of youth. Liland |

Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Sean Belt Date: 17 Oct 00 - 04:15 PM When I'm acting a role that requires me to be clean-shaven, I shave it off. Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: MK Date: 17 Oct 00 - 04:08 PM I just like the look of it and have always instantly regretted it whenever I've been stupid enough to shave it off....although having it makes me look about 5-7 years older than I actually am, and it's all salt and peppery at this point. I agree with Clinton that it also cuts down on shaving time. The bitchingest part of having one for me, is when trimming it, trying to get both sides to match up evenly. On those occassions where I totally mess it up (never trim it when you first wake up in the morning) I just walk around with my head cocked slightly to one side for a few days. *BG* |

Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: Naemanson Date: 17 Oct 00 - 02:59 PM I first grew a beard after I crossed the Arctic Circle the first time in 1972. I had the idea at the time that I had to earn the right to grow a beard and sailing a Navy ship along the Northern coast of Norway seemed like a good reason. The only times I have shaved it since then was for the year I worked for the USINS and once in college on a whim. The other time was early on in my relationship with the woman who would become my wife. We were living together and she had gone to bed before i got home. As I stood in the bathroom I made a snap decision to shave and see what I looked like. I then went to bed. In the morning my wife-to-be turned over, looked in my direction and shrieked. She was in bed with a stranger. I never shved again until I went to work for USINS. They required a clean shaven face and I had to comply. Why? Too lazy to drag a blade over my face. Or maybe it's because God put that hair there. Who am I to take it off?

Subject: RE: BS: Beards and Mudcatters From: mousethief Date: 17 Oct 00 - 02:56 PM I wear a beard primarily because I'm lazy (which is the same reason I wear my hair very short). It helps that it's rather traditional in my religious subculture.
