Subject: RE: BS: Jayohjo in Russia!!!! From: roopoo Date: 08 Feb 01 - 02:27 AM Hope to hear from you as and when you can post. Enjoy yourself! Still no word from himself in Shenyang. He's been having trouble with internet access since he got a new computer. Andrea |
Subject: RE: BS: Jayohjo in Russia!!!! From: GUEST,jayohjo in Russia Date: 07 Feb 01 - 01:09 PM Yes! The sparkling bits are fantastic, the whole world is glittery! I'm in Novgorod now, as a teaching assistant - the standard of English the kids have keeps surprising me, they're great - it embarrasses me to compare it to equivalent levels of French and German in most English kids. I haven't spoken English at full speed for days though, which is quite odd, but fun! The family I'm staying with are lovely, and they've coped admirably with my vegetarianism - as for 'bland food', which someone mentioned, it's not so much bland as all tasting of pickle! I'm getting used to it though, and have developed a deep love of borshch - everything is cool, but internet access is very hard to find, so frequency of postings will now diminish even more.... Much love Jayohjo XXX |
Subject: RE: BS: Jayohjo in Russia!!!! From: roopoo Date: 04 Feb 01 - 02:20 AM Glad you're ok and enjoying it! By the way the mafia are usually to be seen in black leather, and drinking in the sort of bars that only foreigners and they could afford! My other half has just decamped to Shenyang, which isn't all that far south of Vladivostok really, 'cept in China. He had heard it was -25 there last week. I haven't had contact with him yet. It got to -30 or so in Kemerovo, and he told me about the humidity freezing so that ice particles sparkled in the air! Keep us posted. Andrea |
Subject: RE: BS: Jayohjo in Russia!!!! From: katlaughing Date: 03 Feb 01 - 02:39 PM **BG** It is so much fun to read of your travels and to *hear* your exuberance! Just wonderful. I've always heard St. Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, so I look forward to hearing more about it from you. Firecat, Berlin! Kewl! You'll have to post us about it, too. I don't know but a few phrases of Russina, but my brother learned it at Army Language school and I always heard him pronounce it more like "daws vah dawn ya"? Is he out of date or is it our Rocky Mtn West accent? **BG** Just wondering...I love languages and try to pick up what I can here and there. Thanks! kat

Subject: RE: BS: Jayohjo in Russia!!!! From: GUEST,jayohjo in Russia Date: 03 Feb 01 - 07:49 AM Gah! Disgraceful behaviour! Thief.... Firecat, re Red Square - I know what you mean, but when we saw it it was snowing, and beautiful, and we'd just bought blini from a stall just outside the gate - sour cream and sugar, if anyone's interested, and it was melting and freezing at the same time - it was just starting to get dark, and everything was completely magical. I can't believe I leave for Novgorod tomorrow night - it'd be completely normal to go on holiday here for 2 weeks, but it feels so odd to be leaving this quickly - I don't feel I've had time to get to know the city enough at all! Anyway, this post is really hard work, as I'm typing on a Cyrillic keyboard, so will be back soon with more excitement! Love from the REAL Jayohjo! XXX

Subject: RE: BS: Jayohjo in Russia!!!! From: Firecat Date: 29 Jan 01 - 10:10 AM Preevyet! I'm glad you're having a great time in Russia!! I went a few years back (25th March - 4th April 1998) and it was absolutely gorgeous!! I was a bit disappionted by Red Sqaure though. What did you think of it? I went to St. Petersburg and Novgorod as well. It was one of the best fortnights of my life!!! I'm SO jealous that you're there because I want to go back sometime. You are really, really, really (times 259 million!) lucky. Make the most of it! Mind you, I'm going to Berlin 6 - 12 April! Dass Vedaneeya! (I know how to write it but there isn't any Cyrillic alphabet on this computer) Kaumu (That's some Russian for you!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Jayohjo in Russia!!!! From: GUEST,jayohjo Date: 29 Jan 01 - 08:40 AM My mum's nicked my cookie! This is a bit long, so hope I figured out the html properly... Having a top time, have done the 'proper' tour of Moscow - Red Square, Church of Christ the Saviour, Church of the Epiphany, the 'White House', the Arbat, Novodevichniy Convent - and also the more unofficial tour, by the Russian students who are our guides, who took us to a Russian club which was cool, apparently very popular with Turkish and Greek people, and I think there may have been Mafiamen there (the BMWs and sexy young girlfriends gave it away, though they may have been rich businessmen with high class hookers for all we know...) - but don't panic Mum, it's not dodgy! Haven't really needed my thermals too much, weather has been cold but not as bad as I expected - tho apparently it was -20 last week! Bummer tho - temp is now around 0, so all the snow is melting and the streets are full of slush and little rivers of scummy water. Still, I've got big boots. The people have been so lovely so far, and am struck by how much they know about their city and country and history - the students and young people can tell us everything a tour guide would, and this is the norm - all the details of the history, architecture, literature, art, society, conduct, traditions, reasons for it all. Very excited about move to Novgorod this weekend too, we get to go by overnight train, and am excited about the whole Russian train thing! Plus I've found a girl here who's into Liza Carthy, and has brought her fiddle, and a couple of other people play guitar - tho none of them brought one, they all decided to get a cheap one here! (and heven't yet). Unfortunately, these are all the students who are staying on in Moscow, but with any luck we'll all meet up in Petersburg in June. Anyhow, that's enough for the moment - next posting form Novgorod perhaps! hugs - Jayohjo XXX |

Subject: Jayohjo in Russia!!!! From: GUEST,jayohjo in Russia Date: 25 Jan 01 - 05:42 AM Hey everyone, I've made it to the land of snow and ice! Am having a great time, living in Uni of Moscow halls at present, though am moving some many miles further north next week. It seems we brought the cold weather with us - it was -2, and is now apparently -20! But that's not quite as cold as it sounds, I'm fine and haven't even needed all my thermals yet! Anyhow, will post again soon, but computers are slow here at the uni, so much love and thanks for all those supportive messages - byeee! Jayohjo XX |
