Subject: RE: BS: Roll Your Own Blackout - Summer Solstice From: CarolC Date: 18 Jun 01 - 03:46 PM I don't know, Doug R. But if he loses the support, or at least the cooperation, of his republican allies in California with regard to energy, it could make it difficult for him to continue with the energy platform he has been advocating up until now. |

Subject: RE: BS: Roll Your Own Blackout - Summer Solstice From: katlaughing Date: 18 Jun 01 - 03:41 PM According to THIS SITE, what follows is why it is called "Midsummer" at the beginning of what we know as "Summer" Although the June solstice marks the beginning of Northern summer, it is often called midsummer. In traditional Gaelic culture the summer solstice represented the mid-point between the commencement of the Celtic summer on May 1 and autumn on August 1. |

Subject: RE: BS: Roll Your Own Blackout - Summer Solstice From: CarolC Date: 18 Jun 01 - 02:53 PM Some possible good news on the way...
The constituency of California's Congressmen and women is making their displeasure with the price gouging practices of the wholesale suppliers known to their local politicians.
Since documents are surfacing that demonstrate that the energy crisis is not the result of a real supply shortage, but instead, of anti-free market (but legal) manipulation of supply, as well as price gouging at the wholesale level, and because voters are becoming savvy to the situation, even the republican politicians of California may soon have to give in to pressure to advocate putting caps on wholesale prices. That should go a long way toward easing the energy crunch in California. And if and when that happens, G.W. will be out on that anti-price control limb all by himself (with regard to California). Not an enviable place to be, considering how many delegates California has. |

Subject: RE: BS: Roll Your Own Blackout - Summer Solstice From: Mudlark Date: 24 May 01 - 07:10 PM Great idea, Kat...will send it on. Actually, I do this every night, now that summer is here. I am inundated w/earwigs and they are drawn to the light, yet it is so hot during the day the only way to cool the house is to open everything at dusk when the temp. finally drops. The only way to avoid the rivers of earwigs that pour thru the front door, kitchen window, etc. is to leave all the lights off. Candles don't seem to attract...and it is great light to sing by. Subject: RE: BS: Roll Your Own Blackout - Summer Solstice From: katlaughing Date: 23 May 01 - 10:13 AM Good point, UB Ed. I suspect they set it for those hours thinking most people would be home from work and not knowing how many phoaks would be able to get their companies to go along. Although, wouldn't it be lovely if they did? It's being forced on them, too, so one would think they'd be open to it, at least in some parts of the world. |

Subject: RE: BS: Roll Your Own Blackout - Summer Solstice From: UB Ed Date: 23 May 01 - 08:48 AM Neat idea, but it seems the timing may be a bit off. I'm thinking 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. may be more relevant for the power companies to notice. Ed |

Subject: RE: BS: Roll Your Own Blackout - Summer Solstice From: Gypsy Date: 22 May 01 - 11:25 PM We do that every sunday, only it is from dusk to about 1AM. The only cheat is using the microwave in the summer to make tea (winter it is on the woodstove) |

Subject: RE: BS: Roll Your Own Blackout - Summer Solstice From: katlaughing Date: 22 May 01 - 05:40 PM In our dreams, DougeRdarlin':-) Actually I don't know if this will matter one whit to the simpleton, but at least people will feel as though they are doing something AND, if enough participate, so the energy companies should at least notice. Sure beats the alternative of getting sucked in by all of the insidious ads proclaiming such horrid crises and how to leverage 45,000 barrels of oil per day! Or, get sucked in by the same ads and headlines and feel there is nothing an individual can do. I agree, Jenellen. |

Subject: Roll Your Own Blackout - Summer Solstice From: katlaughing Date: 22 May 01 - 05:24 PM I think this is a grand idea, scheduled for Summer Solstice. I just received it in my email. Here it is, in its entirety:
ROLL YOUR OWN BLACKOUT
7-10pm worldwide, all time zones As an alternative to George W. Bush's energy policies and lack of emphasis on efficiency, conservation and alternative fuels, there will be a voluntary rolling blackout on the first day of summer, June 21 at 7pm - 10pm in any time zone (this will roll it across the planet). Its a simple protest and a symbolic act. Turn out your lights from 7pm-10pm on June 21. Unplug whatever you can unplug in your house. Light a candle to the Sungoddess, kiss and tell or not, take a stroll in the dark, invent ghost stories, anything that's not electronic -have fun in the dark. Read the 1999 book "Natural Capitalism" by Hawken and Lovins to learn that conservation/high efficiency technologies already ARE on-the-shelf. If implemented these revolutionary ideas would pay themselves off within five years, after which we'd be pumping far less greenhouse gas into the atmosphere and saving bucks to boot. Forward this as widely as possible, to your government representatives and environmental contacts. Let them know we want global education, participation and funding in conservation, efficiency and alternative fuel efforts -- and an end to over-exploitation and misuse of the earth's resources. Anyone knows that the Cheney-Bush team is blowing smoke when they tell us that "... conservation can't help, it'll just be too expensive to implement those technologies..." While on the other hand, technology to develop and deploy weapons to blow incoming ICBMs out of the sky are easy to come by.
