For a good duiscussion and to see what AMERINDIANS/FIRST NATIONS PEOPLES/AMERICANS OF NATIVE DESCENT are saying about his lineage, please CLICK HERE and read some of the messages. The first one gives his supposed Indian background, while one of the later ones, an article from a newspaper, interviews his sister who gives their Italian lineage. Very interesting. I'd say "his heart was red" regardless and he did a great service in dedicating his life to the environment.

Cranky - you do indeed have a valid point. There have been some writers who refer to that branch of my family as "First Americans". When and where those folks came from is presently a topic of hot debate in academic circles. Like many, many others, I have "roots" that both pre- and post-date Columbus, so I reckon I can be considered "native" by most any definition of the word. I do think you might want to take a closer look at definitions of the word "indigenous". The most common definition is "born in" a place.

You're absolutely right about that Commercial, I don't know anyone who doesn't remember it

However (go ahead an yell at me if you want to)I strongly object to the term, "Native American" being applied solely to the American Indian.

THERE ARE NO INDIGENOUS HUMAN BEINGS IN THE ENTIRE WESTERN HEMISPHERE, THAT WE KNOW OF. The American Indian is as much an immigrant as anyone else. I was born in the United States of America as were my parents. That makes me a Native American. I take nothing away from the Indians. I have several close friends that belong to that group (don't bother waving your finger at that one)Among them The Blues singer, "Leonda" a Cherokee, and Tall Oak of the Narragansett. I have truly liked every Indian I've ever known. But they aint the only Native Americans.

No question that the "tear drop" commercial was one of, if not THE most effective commercial ever. However, Ol' Iron Eyes was not native american. He was (I think) an aspiring mostly Italian american bit-part actor who found a way to kick his career into a more profitable direction.

It was Iron Eyes Cody who was the NA in the commercial. Here's a little bit about him, from when he passed away in 1999:

America recently lost a true legend, an enduring symbol of our great country, and a person who worked tirelessly for the causes he cherished. You may remember Iron Eyes Cody best as the "Crying Indian" from the public service ads that appeared regularly on television in the 1970's. Recent surveys have shown that this ad is still remembered by millions and millions of us who were touched by Iron Eye's dramatic plea to preserve the earth.

In a public service announcement that aired on the first-ever "Earth Day" in 1971, television viewers watched Iron Eyes paddle his canoe up a polluted stream past a belching smokestack, and walk to the edge of a busy highway strewn with trash. As the camera moved in for a close-up, a single tear rolled down Iron Eyes' cheek, a tear for the fate of America. "People start pollution," said the narrator's voice, "people can stop it."

That tear proved more eloquent than any words, as viewers found themselves profoundly moved, and dedicated themselves to preserving the beauty of the American landscape. The ecology movement, still in it infancy, had found a powerful ally in the talents of Iron Eyes Cody; the commercial left an impression on millions of us who saw the spot. In fact, the spot was recently named one of the top fifty commercials of all time. People who saw the advertisement still remember Iron Eyes and his plea to all Americans to protect the environment.

For the rest of his life, Iron Eyes would carry on his mission to preserve America's beauty. His crusade took him everywhere, from lecture halls and school auditoriums to audiences with presidents, royalty, and the Pope.

Good luck,

kat

Can anyone help me with this request I received?

Teardrop Native American PSA

I am dreadfully curious about a song from a PSA that launched the "pitch in" slogan. it was around the time of the native American with the teardrop. If anybody can track down a clue about the identity of the composer, the artist and the lyrics please help. Here is what i remember of the lyrics:

If you never saw the green grass anymore, cause it's covered up with litter by the folks next door, then "what would you do? what would you do? if you what would you do? what would you do? if you never saw the sky, for the soot that's in your eye or the garbage piled so high, what would you do?

Thanks Cookie
