Subject: RE: BS: The Legendary Saltergate Folk Weekend From: Tyke Date: 25 Sep 01 - 06:21 PM Hello Just a line to tell you what a great weekend it was at the Saltersgate. However work managed to mess up my weekend I could not get away on Friday until late. By the time I got to Whitby it was Late. So I ended up over at the Bay (Robin Hoods Bay) Folk Club. Had a great night as usual it has to be said. It was not untill Saturday afternoon that I managed to get over to the Saltersgate I had I was told missed a great session on the Friday Night. It was a late finish 1am when the Landlord decided it was time for his bed. Well he was up to serve breakfasts to his guests next morning. B&B was only £12 a night so many had booked in to save the drive to Whitby. There were the hardy types on the Caravan Park but it was a little cold for camping. We had a relaxing afternoon session with MC Deric Elliot taking a back seat whilst Liam Haywood entertained and organised everyone. His stories had people on the edge of there seats (Angie told us that they had just had a story teller vist his school). He then organised the singers filling in from time to time with a Madjic trick! The main room filled up nicely for the evening session. The regulars from the Tap and Spile Sunday Night session arrived on mass with voices and instruments. One song sticks in my head it was from Wendy Price! I must ask her for the words. It started by discribing a nice little musicains session with fiddles, melodians, madolins, banjos and so on and then they arrive "Sixteen Morons with there Borons". Well depending on whether or not you play the Boron you will get the gist of the rest of the song! The rest of the weekend is just a blur however don't worry if you missed it. We are having another weekend but not untill July. However I'm sure the landlord who is sufering from the lack of trade due to the Foot and Mouth restrictions will be only too pleased to host a MUDCAT Gathering! He deserves the support for the support he has given in the past when he was the landlord at the Saltersgate. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Legendary Saltergate Folk Weekend From: brid widder Date: 25 Sep 01 - 05:59 PM Thanks for posting news of this George...what a fantastic place...definitely a good site for a Mudcatters gathering. some B&B accomodation in the pub or camping on the field across the road, the landlord said he'd do a BBQ ! good beer...Black Sheep..and good food...I had a WHOLE LOBSTER for tea..cost? £2:95!And What a location, once the foot & mouth crisis is over brilliant walks...even a steam train nearby, in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors. We would certainly be made very welcome. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Legendary Saltergate Folk Weekend From: Tyke Date: 20 Sep 01 - 03:14 PM Greetings Geoff the Duck, Sorry I was unable to chat at the Jug as predicted I was working!! Its a free and easy afternoon according to Deric Elliot so anything is possible. Thanks for confirming just what I already heard about the Saltersgate being a great venue. Quite a lot of Mudcatters have expressed an interest in a gathering at the Legendary Saltersgate in the future. If you manage to get over on the Sunday (I think Bill Sables is going on the Saturday)have a think about a Mudcat Meet sort of there and when! On Sunday night I Deric will move venues to the Tap N Spile in Whitby as this is his regular session. I quite often as you know go over to Whitby for the Weekend. I always go to the Sunday night session in the Tap n Spile. The down side is that I have to drive home afterwards so I can't Drink the Musicians and Singers Free Beer. That said the drive home around midnight is wonderfull. I'ts like a trip back in time over the moors and into Leeds with hardly a car to be found. There is another alternative which I have been told is quite possible. That would be to stay over in Whitby on the Sunday Night and an early start to commute in the Morning. Leeds being still under 2hrs away and traffic being light. Hope to see you some time Sunday if possible! Cheers Tyke PS The guest I brought along to the Jug on Wednesday had a great time! His favourite food is Pizza! Oh and Thank everyone at the Jug for making him feel so welcome! |

Subject: RE: BS: The Legendary Saltergate Folk Weekend From: Geoff the Duck Date: 19 Sep 01 - 10:49 AM I remember some two excellent New Year's Eves spent at the Saltersgate with a bunch of folkies. The pub has enough rooms for singing and tunemaking to happen without them clashing. If the weather is dry, there is also a beergarden overlooking the moors. I also recall an afternoon spent singing there during Whitby Folk Week one year. The Saltersgate Inn is located just to the Whitby side of the magnificent feature known to me as the Devil's Cauldron, but to those from the Northeast as the Hole of Horcum. When is the event due to finish George? We may be able to get there on Sunday if things are happening long enough to make the trip worthwhile! Quack! Geoff the Duck! |

Subject: RE: BS: The Legendary Saltergate Folk Weekend From: Tyke Date: 18 Sep 01 - 05:15 PM Hello brid widder, All you will have to do is ask the Bus Driver. That said I will give you a discription of the location of said Legendary Saltersgate. When you are traveling towards Whitby from Pickering you will see a large layby on your right just before Salters Bank. This steep bank has a hairpin corner. If anyone is driving over the Moors you will find that you will need to in 2nd gear!! The Ledgendary Saltersgate is the next and only building on your left. If you get to the early warning station (Fylingdales now square thingy's instead of golf balls)you have past it. In which case I recomend a) the next bus back from Whitby or b) Not drinking and driving! Should you be Traveling from Whitby to Pickering it's square thing's on the left the next building on the right is The Ledgendary Saltersgate. Please observe the Foot and Mouth rules that are in force across the Moors. I't can be quite foggy across the Moors at night However the Salters Bank and The Legendary Saltersgate are land marks you cannot miss. Oh yes the fire will be kept alight to keep the Ghost of the alegadly Murdered Customs Officer in his grave uderneath the Fire Place! Yours Truly George |
