No, I don't think there's any disagreement there; I'm just speculating and suggesting, the way you do.

And I'm remembering that Engine 33 went through a few changes between the way InOBU posted them first and the way they settled down in his recorded version. Songs do that.

They are a bit like shoes that way, you have to wear them to stretch them till they are right for you. Or musical instruments - you need to play a bit before they sound right with you playing them.

Great song, Larry. I have already given out a couple of your cds to friends. One of my favorite cds, now.
I am a little uncertain about your meaning in the last two lines of your song. Do you mean "you are offering" rather than your? "Commitment" seems fine to me. Ounce? Drop? I dunno, you can throw a Thesaurus at it and come up stilted or no better.
(I used to have a copy of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, made up to look like a school composition. It was surrounded by the teacher's corrections and comments; the sense of the speech was completely lost)

Larry, you continue to amaze me although I shouldn't be.....The latest CD arrived, I got my CD player repaired and then when I was out of the hospital, I finally got to listen to it and........

WINNER!!!!!!

I'd say keep it up, but I know you will.......good stuff from you seems to be the norm now. Many thanks for the sharing!

Well, Lor, now we know that Genie never got any fish from you -- but did you give her your Vincent to ride? ;-)

You and Kevin may disagree 'bout which words to use; but, I agree him on the CD theme, 'An idea that occurred to me that could chime in with the idea of having the CD enclosed between two love songs 20 years and more to the same love. Maybe you could be having the songs in between in some way telling the story of the years in between. I don't mean so much the personal story, the things happening in the world that prompted songs. And the linking idea of loyalty and solidarity, which is, from what I've seen of your songs, Larry, a continuing theme.' Just give it a good think, ceart go leor?

Slán, Áine

Hey gang, thanks for the input, and McGrath, you may be right, but I think a song may mean one thing to the writer and another to the listener! I will see how the song plays! As to a red haired girl a good reason not to fish, it is concidered bad luck to pass a red haired girl on the way to fish, and many a fisher passed up a good day of fishing for that reason, all the more reason to marry one! Cheers, Larry

Wonderful, lovely songs, Lorcan and I LOVE the idea of beginning and ending the new CD with them! Thanks for sharing them. Such a beautiful way to express your love for Genie.

It is also wonderful to hear of so many people hearing your Engine 33. It still makes me cry a lot, so I don't listen, too often, BUT I am glad others do. It is a very powerful song. Would love to hear other's versions, too, esp. yours, Áine! And, Kevin, you did a great job of it!

An idea that occurred to me that could chime in with the idea of having the CD enclosed between two love songs 20 years and more to the same love. Maybe you could be having the songs in between in some way telling the story of the years in between. I don't mean so much the personal story, the things happening in the world that prompted songs. And the linking idea of loyalty and solidarity, which is, from what I've seen of your songs, Larry, a continuing theme.

As you say the new song is short for you - I have a feeling it might grow an extra verse - there's a lot compressed into that last verse. From the thread about commitment here on the Mudcat, we know what you are talking about - but I'm not sure that it'd come over to a listener.

And maybe one quibble - I'm not sure about that last line, especially the "ounce"; and does "commitment" as a word have the strength of "anchor" and "loyalty" and "true"?

I think this is one of the occasions where, if it was my song, I might try writing out the thought I'm trying to get across in prose, and then see about turning it into verse.

That looks good. Well they both do. I look forward to hearing them - and I love the idea of starting and ending with the two songs, the old one and the new.

Alright, my darlin', will do. You don't think they'd mind if it has a bit of Irish-Texas twang in it, do ya? ;-)

Seriously, my brother, while I was listening to you sing Engine 33, I was taken back to the wee pub in Donegal, where I was lucky enough to sing a cupla songs a few years ago. There was an ol' fella there, who pulled his tin whistle out of his pocket and played along while I sang a lullaby as Gaeilge . . . and in my mind I can just hear him playin' along while you sing this fine, fine song. If we can work things out, why don't you and I try and find that pub one day . . .

There's a PM comin' at ya, Áine

Áine! Please do record Engine 33. Last Tuesday I performed it at Paddy Reilly's and a Scotish band there asked the same and I said the same. I have taken McGrath's version over to the folks of Engine 33 and Ladder 9 (they loved it) and will take them all the other versions... wouldn't it be nice for them to have versions from all over? thanks again, Larry

A Lorcan, a chroí! Nach bhfuil tú ag iarraidh níos fearr agus níos fearr! ;-) Better and better, my darlin'!!

Since I've had Sorcha Dorcha playin' and singin' to me all day -- me thinks that CD has a permanent place in the CD changer (hehehe) -- I'm thinkin' I'll just have to hurry up with my own wee offering to send to you . . . may I please have your permission to sing and record Engine 33 on it? I'm thinking of an acapella version, perhaps with a tin whistle and/or low whistle underneath the vocal (since I can't play the pipes, and you're too far away to come over).

I think your idea about beginning and ending the next CD with your beautiful love songs to Genie is a MARVELOUS idea. I can't wait to hear it. So, g'wan, my brother, get busy!

Le meas is grá, is mise do chara go deo Áine

Well after Genie's reaction to the song, via email this morning... I'd be crazy not to put it one the next CD... and thanks Gnu, there are a bunch of songs for the next, one a song i wrote for genie some (she'll kill me for saying this... ) twenty some years ago, then the new one. Maybe start the CD with the old one and finish up with the new one... here is a few verses of the old one...

Come here to me now, turn off the set awhile
and I'll tell you of a time not to long ago
when my love and I sat spell bound by a tale
the like of which our sons will never know
we'd walk to the square for a market or a fair
and wonder at the plenty or the prices
but in the chill morning air, there was nothing quite so fair
as the crys of the seagulls or the Traveller's wives

A red haired girl, a good reason not to fish
so its off to the high field for a pint or two or three
or late to mass, standing in by the door
but I suppose its alright between God and me
and the seas may be fearce and I'd fear for my life
but its better than fearing for my sanity
so its shoot the net and freeze, God send the salmon please
for the night is long and this half decker is cold.
Cheersm'dears Larry

The shortest song I've written to date, I think, for my wee wife Genie, and to the tune, As I walked Out, all rights reserved, sing it in good health friends...

As I set out to the Listowl races
A red haired girl was there walking by my side
Come wind and rain and the sting of poverty
She has been my anchor my joy and my pride

Or'e the years that followed we knew few comforts
As we walked hard roads in these changing days
I could count on her for her strength and her loyalty
No matter the danger or rock strewn ways

And now as I sit here and I sing my heart to you
And I see a tear drop glistening as my tale unfolds
I would trade ten thousand of the tears your offering
For an ounce of the commitment my true love holds

Le haigh gra, Lor
