Subject: RE: BS: I've lost it From: M.Ted Date: 07 Oct 02 - 11:05 AM One thing that can happen, when using a ZIP is that the file that you thought that you had created on the desktop is actually on the ZIP disk--and the file may actually be there instead of on your hard drive-- Amos would know better, but if your computer seems to be working, I can't see any reason not to try to open the ZIP disk, It hasn't been my experience that that a computer crash destroys files on an external drive--if you want, it might be good to try to read a non-critical disc in the ZIP drive first-- Also, for future reference, it is important to use back-up disks only for back-up |

Subject: RE: BS: I've lost it From: open mike Date: 06 Oct 02 - 10:28 PM I thought this was a thread about that Lucinda Willams song the one that goes: "I think I lost it, let me know if you come acrosst it, let me know if i dropped it along a back road somewhere, nothing can replace it, no memory erase it, I know i'm never gonna find another one to compare--" I always thought she was talking about her virginity- but maybe it has to do with her hard drive?? or zip drive?? |

Subject: RE: BS: I've lost it From: Mudlark Date: 06 Oct 02 - 07:54 PM Thanks all for words of succor and wisdom. I have a disk warrior, just can't get the damn thing to fight on my behalf. I'll look again and see if anything is possible but had to do the paperclip trick on my imac to get it going again so am assuming I'm SOL.... My first thought was...enough with the Zip already! It looks like when I gather the pennies together I'm headed for a CD burner. In the meantime if there's anything LEFT on the Zip disk I think I'll have it transferred by somebody to a CD. Played my guitar on the porch for an hour, with the fountain in the fish pond burbling away and hummingbirds zipping about and decided...how important is all that lost information, really. anyway? |

Subject: RE: BS: I've lost it From: Liz the Squeak Date: 06 Oct 02 - 02:11 PM Have you looked down the back of the couch? Most stuff ends up down there, even if you lost it in the bedroom.. it's a sort of gravitational anomaly, sofas suck. Seriously, backups are the only way... or expensive retrieval. Things are never lost, especially when it's the IRS looking for it.... LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: I've lost it From: Alice Date: 06 Oct 02 - 01:12 PM Zip disks are so risky in losing work that I bought a CD burner... more room for storage and MUCH cheaper than zip disks. Maybe it's time to switch, Mudlark. Like Amos, I also recommend trying Norton's file recover to see if you can find what was lost. |

Subject: RE: BS: I've lost it From: Amos Date: 06 Oct 02 - 12:00 PM Nancy: Norton has a disk recove rutility that may be able to salvage the files if you haven't changed anything since the crash. The other good tool forthis is Disk Warrior -- but if you don't already have it it will be awkward. Don't try to write anything to that Zip disk. Misophist -- I believe she's using an iMac. A |

Subject: RE: BS: I've lost it From: mack/misophist Date: 06 Oct 02 - 11:50 AM The next time it crashes, make at least two, preferably three partitions. KEEP YOUR DATA AS FAR AWAY FROM C:\ AS YOU CAN. The stuff that is gone was associated with C:\. Mount the zip somewhere else. Use 'find target' in the My Documents property sheet to put that somewhere else. Until this gets streight, back up zip when you first open it. |

Subject: RE: BS: I've lost it From: Mudlark Date: 06 Oct 02 - 03:48 AM Hi Guest...I do back up pretty frequently, and most of major writing is backed w/hard copy as well, but as always there are seldom used graphics, fragments, chapter starts, etc. that don't seem all that important...until they're gone. And the zip IS my backup, so if that's gone I've really lost "everything!" Will tackle that one tomorrow. Fr. = French...good French movie called Happenstance...which was reasonable escape material. |

Subject: RE: BS: I've lost it From: GUEST Date: 06 Oct 02 - 03:26 AM It's obviously of no help now, but the words "back up" come to mind. Hard disks are so cheap these days. What's an Fr. movie? |

Subject: I've lost it From: Mudlark Date: 06 Oct 02 - 03:14 AM Oh woe is me, I've just lost my "EVERYTHING" folder. It was open on the desktop when my computer crashed while zip drive open. When I rebooted the folder was gone, gone, gone. Spent the next 2 hours trying to find it to no avail. This is the second time I've had serious loss using zip drive...first time it happened it erased the zip, which wasn't just backup...had lots of graphics I don't keep on the HD. There was so much stuff in that folder I don't even know the extent yet of what I've lost...but, sadly, I will find out as one thing after another isnt there when I go looking for it. I'm afraid to reopen the zip for fear all of IT will be gone too. Cowards die a thousand deaths...stupid people who leave their zip open while doing graphics manipulation die 1001. Of course, I did the adult thing...kicked the desk, had a stiff drink and a large bowl of popcorn, and watched a Fr. movie.... |
