Subject: RE: BS: DOONESBURY...for a LOT of years! From: Don Firth Date: 28 Dec 02 - 09:45 PM I have an old friend (well-known science fiction writer, actually) who maintains that Attila the Hun was much too far to the Left for his taste. . . . Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: DOONESBURY...for a LOT of years! From: Peter T. Date: 28 Dec 02 - 05:32 PM This is where you get your Doonesbury daily fix on the Web: here! This latest one seems to me to be pretty well slanderous -- Did Pat Buchanan really say this? I wonder if Doonesbury's lawyers checked on this one before it went out?? yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: BS: DOONESBURY...for a LOT of years! From: DougR Date: 28 Dec 02 - 04:19 PM If was a huge Pogo fan, myself. I was about as sorry to see it disappear from the comic pages as I was Opus, Bill the Cat and the rest of the gang from Bloom County. I like Doonsesbury too, but think it belongs on the editorial page rather than the comic pages. I definitely see that it leans to the left though, and rarely the right. DougR |

Subject: RE: BS: DOONESBURY...for a LOT of years! From: Midchuck Date: 28 Dec 02 - 01:25 PM Although I'm sure I had an ideology at some point in my life, it's been wrenched away from me bit by bit, by bad public behaviour of elected officials. That happens in Canada, too? Bedamn. I thought you guys were supposed to be more rational than us. Peter |

Subject: RE: BS: DOONESBURY...for a LOT of years! From: Rick Fielding Date: 28 Dec 02 - 12:32 PM Actually the main reason that I've loved Doonesbury all these years is that he absolutely assasinates BOTH sides. Just seems he takes the piss out of liberals, consevatives, and literally every occupation on the planet. Although I'm sure I had an ideology at some point in my life, it's been wrenched away from me bit by bit, by bad public behaviour of elected officials. Yup he portrayed Reagan as a doddering old fool, and remember Dan Quale as a "feather"? Dubya gets it in spades as well....but so did Clinton! One of the current story lines is the Military trying to give all the media "cowboys and cowgals" a crash course on how not to either get killed or wounded in the up coming Iraq-War TV special. It's not to save REPORTERS' lives that they're doin' it, but to prevent soldiers having to HELP the reporters (and putting themselves in danger) Believe me, it's the media journalists who look bad, and the Army comes off as the good guys. Liberal preachers, teachers, minorities etc. get in in the neck on a regular basis, along with the right wing. I'm sure that Iraq will get covered, but you can be sure that Trudeau will have some kind of story line shining a light on Saudi Arabia and Pakistan....the places that REALLY hate us....oh sorry....they're our friends, ha ha! Besides, I think that there's a kind of morning ritual that (a rapidly diminishing number of) people go through. Drink coffee....read newspaper...discuss current events with spouse...laugh at favourite comics (our other favourite is Darby Conley's "Get Fuzzy"...'cuz we got critters).....jeez I'm so friggin' domesticated it's sickening! Thanks for the "BS" Joe Clones. Rick |

Subject: RE: BS: DOONESBURY...for a LOT of years! From: Midchuck Date: 28 Dec 02 - 08:13 AM I was a rabid Pogo fan. Still am. Let's have some respect for seniority out there, dammit! You're right about Doonesbury, though. It's the best we have now, even though it buys into the "If the conservatives are wrong, then the liberals must be right" fallacy. Peter. |

Subject: RE: BS: DOONESBURY...for a LOT of years! From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 28 Dec 02 - 06:42 AM Kat, try the 26th. Yes, I've been following Doonesbury since the very early years- remember Walden Puddle? There have been years when I didn't much like it, but I've always followed the gang and it's fun to see the new generation. Rick, my parents were rabid Pogo fans, I still have the original edition of The Pogo Papers signed by Walt Kelly! Yes, Doones is definitely the Pogo of the next generation. |

Subject: RE: BS: DOONESBURY...for a LOT of years! From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 28 Dec 02 - 06:41 AM I haven't seen Doonesbury much in recent years (decades?). I don't even know if any of our papers still take it. Maybe someone from this side of the Pacific could enlighten me? I have several Doonesbury books & a few strips in my cartoon collection. The collection started in my last year of high school (1969 - I remember it well) & includes political & other cartoons that have appealed to my strange sense of humour. I must get the Doonesbury books out again for a look at the past sandra |

Subject: RE: BS: DOONESBURY...for a LOT of years! From: katlaughing Date: 28 Dec 02 - 05:50 AM Rick, I didn't see the one you mentioned. I saw the one for the 28th and the one for the 27th, but neither had the punchline you quoted. Any clues? I love this strip! kat |

Subject: RE: BS: DOONESBURY...for a LOT of years! From: Mark Cohen Date: 28 Dec 02 - 12:19 AM Gee, Rick, thanks a lot...you've now given me yet another way to waste hours and hours in front of the computer. As if Mudcat wasn't enough. I went back to the beginning -- October 1970. I think that might have been from when it ran in the Yale Daily News. (Originally B.D.'s helmet had a "Y" on it instead of a star.) I was a freshman in the fall of 1970, but they didn't run Doonesbury in the Daily Princetonian -- after all, it was done by a Yalie! I remember those early strips very well, though -- probably from the first collection, "Still a Few Bugs in the System". Aloha, Mark |

Subject: DOONESBURY...for a LOT of years! From: Rick Fielding Date: 27 Dec 02 - 11:43 PM Hope the holidays were good for ya. I just realized today that I've been following Doonesbury for so long......well...I've got antique GUITARS that are newer! It is my "Pogo", that wonderful politically oriented strip that my dad and so many others followed throught the fifties and into the sixties. The thing that I love so much about Doonesbury is that the shots are still vicious, accurate to a fault and HILARIOUS! Plus....his characters actually get OLD and irrelevant (just like we do in real life). The ageing hippies, yuppies, Reaganites etc. still rail on but are completely ignored by the "twenty-somethings" whom they've given birth to. Today's strip has literally had me chuckling all day. It's two young space cadets (one of whom works for the CIA AND does internet hacking for a hobby) watching Pat Buchanan defend Trent Lott on the tube. The punch line is "Trent Lott is the Negro of today"! I'll try and do a blue clicky so you can see the whole thing, but it's been so long since I've done one I'll probably screw it up. Cheers Doonesbury Rick |
