Subject: RE: When Politics and Music Clash From: Rick Fielding Date: 19 Mar 03 - 10:25 AM Yeah, Michael Moore is the moron's worst nitemare. He's too American to make the old "Commie" label stick......he shoots guns, has a big beer gut and wears a ball cap. BUT.....he's effective. Boy, I hope someone causes some serious SHIT at the Oscars. That program is SOOOO dull! Rick |

Subject: RE: When Politics and Music Clash From: curmudgeon Date: 19 Mar 03 - 09:55 AM Troll -- A friend opined that the Oscar bosses are terified of Michael Moore's winning for best documentary; they don't want him to speak. Maybe that's when the killing will start. wilco48 -- It is not so much a nickname as it is a title. Carry on -- Tom |

Subject: RE: When Politics and Music Clash From: Mr Red Date: 19 Mar 03 - 07:59 AM Time was when folk music had to be political. Maybe those times they are a changed thing. Hey! maybe someone will write a song about that! |

Subject: RE: When Politics and Music Clash From: Brían Date: 18 Mar 03 - 06:28 PM I stayed home because I wasn't feeling well. My wife won't let me watch the twig(She knows how I can't stop heckling). Maybe I shoulda gone to the Press Room instead. I had this rather dusturbing dream about the lights going out... everywhere. Praying for Peace, Brían |

Subject: RE: When Politics and Music Clash From: JedMarum Date: 18 Mar 03 - 04:41 PM I had a damn long St Pat's Day weekend - no complaints, I was happy for the work and enjoyed the shows - but I was tired by night's end. The big event last night was at a local Pub, seating about 400. It was full. There were TVs everywhere (as is the custom with USA pubs) but this time it was a good idea - because Bush went on as I started. The TVs had the sound off, but the closed captioned text scrolling. The audience lent me a polite ear, but watched intently as the president spoke. In between songs, I asked for updates. It was the oddest St Pat's Day start I've ever had. But, things wound down as the president finished his speech and the party rolled. Great crowd, great pub - great time! |

Subject: RE: When Politics and Music Clash From: Marion Date: 18 Mar 03 - 02:59 PM At a main intersection in Toronto, there's a big electronic board where they broadcast TV with captions (apparently in an attempt to make drivers get into accidents... but that's another issue). As I was coming out of my dinner-time gig last night, people were gathering at this intersection to watch the speech. So I set up on the opposite corner, put a poster in my fiddle case about the protests planned if the war starts, and started playing. I got to talk to a lot of people about the protest plans, and I made good money too. "In such an ugly time, the only true protest is beauty" Phil Ochs Marion |

Subject: RE: When Politics and Music Clash From: Troll Date: 18 Mar 03 - 02:52 PM What will be truly interesting will be the reaction if we go into Iraq an hour ahead of the Academy Awards. Preempting the Oscars would be a real opportunity to pay Hollywood back and the temptation must really be great to do just that. troll |

Subject: RE: When Politics and Music Clash From: Clinton Hammond Date: 18 Mar 03 - 01:55 PM Here, the Kildare House was a ROCKIN'!! Took awhile to get going... there was no real crowd until mid afternoon, but when it caught it burned like the Hindenburg! And well, having elected to only take one gig yesterday, I FINALLY, after 10 years or so in the biz, got to enjoy my St Pats day! I can't believe I was in the pub for 17 hours! Heh |

Subject: RE: When Politics and Music Clash From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Mar 03 - 01:44 PM Quietest St. Patrick's night I've seen in over 20 years -- including other Monday nights. Maybe it wasn't just the speech. Having imminent war hanging over all our heads is quite a jollity dampener, I think. The sound guy made more money than the individual band members. Linn |

Subject: RE: When Politics and Music Clash From: Naemanson Date: 18 Mar 03 - 01:17 PM When I saw this I thought it was a thread about someone complaining about getting politics in his music. I was going to point out the long history of music and politics and point them to... CURMUDGEON! And then I find out it's his thread! Can't say that this has happened to me but then I don't play out very much. And I'll be playing out even less now that I've left Roll & Go. |

Subject: RE: When Politics and Music Clash From: katlaughing Date: 18 Mar 03 - 12:59 PM Geez, curmudgeon, I am sorry to hear that. Too bad they left for an only 13 minute diatribe. I do't know if it was caused by politics, but there was nothing musical or otherwise going on here last night, or even over the weekend. The big "do" was on the 7th and we missed it. Seemed a pretty subdued St. Pat's to me. kat |

Subject: When Politics and Music Clash From: curmudgeon Date: 18 Mar 03 - 09:47 AM Last night I performed my 27th consecutive St. Patrick's Day program at the Press Room. This is usually the busiest day of the year with the club selling the most Guinness in the state of New Hampshire. But when we arrived to set up, there was no great crowd; no need to push our way through with instruments and sound equipment. The place was not empty, but certainly less full than ever before on this day. We started at 6:30 to a half full room. A few more people showed up. Then at 7:45, about a third of the room left, presumably to watch George Bush rattle his sabre. The room never filled up. We put on a great show; the audience loved it and demanded encores. But we made less money last night than we had on any previous St. Patrick's Day in 27 years. Who else had his/her gig/income diminished by the machinations of war and politics? -- Tom |
