Yes. Odd, isn't it? Given that analysis of yours, Rick...which I agree with, it speaks rather well for Daniel Ortega, doesn't it?

Jeez....I have a real dilemma here. Yes, of course I completely mis-trust George Bush Jr. simply because he and his gang use techniques to get their message across, that smack of dishonesty, manipulation, and in some cases that are so completely transparent it really saddens me to see so many people falling for it.

But......Is Jean Chretien THAT much different? I don't think so. A few months ago he absolutely sawed the legs off his potential succesor. It was ruthless, quick (even surgical one might say) and he obviously felt that it was totally neccessary.

I think ALL politicians who get into that rarified atmosphere of leadership are cut-throat. Their main (only?) job then becomes STAYING in power. Sure, they think that their way is the best for their country....BUT...the bottom line is keeping that power as long as possible. It happens rarely that folk like Rumsfeld et al get a second chance for that heady power, and you can bet they'll do ANYTHING to keep it.

Cheers

Rick

World War III was the Cold War. It was a war fought with great determination for about 40 years between two great alliances. It featured a few major engagements (like Korea and Vietnam and Afghanistan) and a whole bunch of somewhat minor ones...some of them fought by proxy, some by direct action of the major players, all of them fought in peripheral areas. It involved intense economic and political warfare as well, and a ceaseless flow of propaganda from both sides, and the deaths of millions of people. It involved assassinations, coups, treachery and deceit. It involved the destabilization of many societies, and the destruction of many people's livelihood and future. It involved the mortgaging of our collective futures in many ways.

A full-scale shooting war between the major players was only avoided (and narrowly) because the nuclear weapons they had were so destructive that they could not contemplate using them without themselves being destroyed in the process.

It finally ended when the weaker economic side (the Soviets) went broke trying to keep up with the high tech arms race. Fortunately, they were under a sane and responsible leader at the time, Gorbachev, and instead of launching his collapsing system into a final conflagration (as often happens with dying empires) he simply peacefully disbanded it, to all intents and purposes.

In so doing, he may have saved the lives of billions, and there isn't a day when I don't silently thank him for that.

Little Hawk: "Yep. World War IV is in the making."

World War IV???? Did I miss WW III???? I know I don't have a television, but I really thought that between NPR and the Internet somebody would tell me when it happened. Guess I was wrong. Who won?

Well danged. Bush *lost* the election fair and square but a bunch of lawyers stepped in and well... there goes democracy!.... Hey, I have friends who are lawyers but then the batalion who stole the election should be tried for treason and deported to any country that don't need 'em. Yeah, make the crooks work for a living like the rest of the world.

Ahhh, as for my friends in Canada. You all are safe for now. The Bush/Cheney/Runsfeld/Perle/Wolfowitz regime has closed the application process for new Axis memebers... But they assure us that your application will be kept on file for future consideration. Sorry, but the way I hear it.........

Rick, you are right. Two dorks ran and one stole it. I am a democrat, but, I will not support any democrat candidate for president who was in a position of power in 2000. We gave it away with the wrong candidate, just as the republicans did in '92, and in 1960.

This kind of lacklustre support is going to dwindle with each further episode of American unilateral aggressive action in the World.

Jeez, Little Hawk I don't know about that. It's looking like the bloodlust is starting to take over on this side of the border. I hear people talking about getting it ALL now that we're there already. Scary stuff and more to come I'm sure.

Yerz,

The only really significant partners were Britain and Australia, as far as I can see. And in those countries a majority of the people were opposed to launching the war, indicating to me that their governments basically hijacked their mandate, due no doubt to financial and strategic gains which they were anticipating as a reward for coming onside.

This kind of lacklustre support is going to dwindle with each further episode of American unilateral aggressive action in the World. It has been dwindlig steadily. The UN was onside for the attack on Serbia, they were onside for Gulf War #1, they were onside for Afghanistan, they were NOT onside for Operation Iraqui Freedom, and they will most probably not be onside for further adventures in international hubris.

Well I don't believe it whould ever be the USA against the "whole" world, what with Britain, Spain and Australia, as well as the other smaller countries who served with us in Iraq. But if it was the "rest" of the world, it would have only taken the coalition another couple of weeks... ;)

Now, Rick, don't go dissing Clinton's cock. It's been in more places than you can shake a stick at.

Yeah, I meant Bush stole Florida. That permitted an electoral college victory for the Republicans, despite losing the USA popular vote (narrowly). You then look at the fact that only about half the people in the USA bother to vote, and Dubya was elected by less than a quarter of all eligible American voters. What a mandate. I agree that Gore did not campaign well. I remember back then...people were calling it "Gush and Bore". Neither side was exactly compelling. Sounds like a Canadian election, only fewer choices on the ballot.

L H. I have difficulty with that "Bush stole the election" bit. Of course he stole Florida, that goes without saying, but Gore was a ridiculously weak candidate.....my gawd he even lost his own State. Clinton's cock, and Gore's inability to maintain a consistant image lost the election. Bush should never have even been in the POSITION to steal it.

Sometimes it makes me SOOOO sad to see Democrats (and lefties) acting exactly like the right wing, and defending their candidate and party without being furious at how badly they were let down by them.

Cheers

Rick

Ha! Ha! Hell, we'd all much rather that Clinton came here anyway! Bush is not popular in Canada. Not in the least. And Gore did not lose that election, he had it stolen from him.

Yep. World War IV is in the making. The USA versus almost everybody else. I hope Canada can somehow have the good sense and good luck to stay out of it, but that will not be easy.

I also hope it's a mainly economic war, rather than a shooting war. We'll see.

Interesting political developement in this morning's paper. American President, GW Bush has cancelled his visit to Canada's capitol, Ottawa. Proving once again that NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY will tell the truth anymore, Ari Fleischer says it's a "scheduling mix-up". Damn, I'd almost forgive the whole friggin' lot of them, if even ONE official would say "You're fuckin' right he's not comin', ya disloyal Commie scum"!

Even Chretien has to play along, saying: "Nope, by gar dere's no problem, I 'ope he'll come in da' fall".

Oh Jean, you aren't going to run again....what a treat if you'd just say "We 'ate each others guts"!

BUT......but.....Chretien's going to the Dominican Republic for a "working vacation" (whatever that is) and guess who his golf partner's gonna be? Yep, Bubba himself. They actually ARE friends.

Can you imagine what the conversation's gonna be like after a few brewskis?

Clinton: "I still don't know how that dork Gore coulda blown it!"

Chretien: "Don't dey' have any admission exams at dat' Yale place"?
