Subject: RE: BS: DVD Technical Question From: Naemanson Date: 28 Apr 03 - 09:45 AM Update That solved the problem. I picked up an RF Modulator at Walmart and plugged the X-Box into it. The DVD plays as clear as a bell. I don't understand why it was only select DVD's that wouldn't come through clear and not others but I'm not going to complain. |

Subject: RE: BS: DVD Technical Question From: Naemanson Date: 17 Apr 03 - 11:29 PM All this stuff is going with me. I figure that there will be an occasional moment when I am not walking on the beach or swimming or swilling umbrella drinks. Thanks for the information. I'll get one of those AV/RF multi-input modulators once I am back on my feet. |

Subject: RE: BS: DVD Technical Question From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Apr 03 - 09:08 PM As much as the manufacturers would love for us to ditch the old tvs and buy the new high-end flat-screen high-definition models, I'm not a slave to high-tech stuff so that I'd cough up that kind of money. Or want to let such a device be the focus of the room. The old sets do us fine; we watch television in smallish rooms, we're not far from the set, the sound is good, and it works for us. But Brett, is any of this stuff gonna go with you to Guam? Does everyone have high-end satellite there, and sit around with tons of technology, or are they all out walking on the beach and swatting snakes? SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: DVD Technical Question From: Clinton Hammond Date: 17 Apr 03 - 02:10 PM " a AV/RF multi-input modulator" Yup... that's the other solution for your stone age TVs.... Also, don't run yer DVD player through yer VCR... it degrades the signal, and you lose all the DVD crispness... If yer gonna do that, you may as well just run yer VCR... :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: DVD Technical Question From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Apr 03 - 01:26 PM My televisions are old (and cheap) enough to only have a coaxial connection on the back. I tried running the DVD player through the newer VCR because it has input points. The result was that some DVDs could be viewed just fine, but others behaved in the way you describe. The solution for me was to cough up about $30 for a AV/RF multi-input modulator. It allows us to use several devices with the television by plugging them into the box and having one coax cable to the tv. Single device RF modulators are available, but they're not very useful if you use VCR, DVD, Cable or Antenna, etc. on one tv. I've picked up a couple, one at Radio Shack (though I question if this is the correct image, it appears to serve only one device) and one at Fry's. They're comparably priced and work the same. I also looked at CompUSA and this device I've linked to wasn't in stock, but they had one (that I can't find online) that is higher end and uses the S-video input/output only, not coax. It came in around $50-60, I think. Hope this helps. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: DVD Technical Question From: Clinton Hammond Date: 17 Apr 03 - 12:49 PM Souonds like the kind of problem that occurs when you hook up a high end system like that to a tv, using RCA plugs.. Better to invest in the S-Video cable... This same thng happened to me with my PS2... and the 20 buck S-video cable fixed it easy peasy... good luck eh! |

Subject: BS: DVD Technical Question From: Naemanson Date: 17 Apr 03 - 11:40 AM I am using my X-Box gaming system as my DVD player. It works very well except that sometimes I get a DVD that just doesn't want to perform. The picture is very fuzzy and dim and the brightness comes and goes. Does anyone else have a similar problem? I know I could goinsearch of other forums to ask this question but I have no idea where to find them nor do I have the time to look. I guess a secondary question would be where else I could go to ask this question. |
