Mr. Nakai was one of those traditionalists that did not feel that sheet mucic should be played on the Native American flute, so he ridiculed this gentleman because there was no need for a tabulature system on the Native American flute ... Mr, Nakai is a good flautist; but good as a human being; I am not so sure about.

This brings these words of wisdom to mind:

"Pobody's Nerfect!" (those are your words, Two Bears!)

"If it contains blame, shame, or judgment, it's not yet the truth". (thanks to Lynn and Duane)

Now, aren't you GLAD I met y'all in Atlanta?   ;-)

Aloha nui loa Daylia; my sister.

> Carlos Nakai the "flute Nazi"? Two Bears, you ARE a gas!

You do not know what I know about Mr. Nakai.

A gentleman invented a tabulature system for the Native American flute, and he called this system "HawkTab" that made it very easy for people to play prepared sheet music on the Native American flute.

I know this gentleman, and I bought a flute from him. and the paperwork I received with the flute taught the HawkTab system.

Mr. Nakai was one of those traditionalists that did not feel that sheet mucic should be played on the Native American flute, so he ridiculed this gentleman because there was no need for a tabulature system on the Native American flute.

However; a few years later; he wites "The Art Of The Native American Flute, and what does HE teach? A tabulature system!

Mr, Nakai; is a good flautist; but good as a human being; I am not so sure about.

My favorite flautist is Coyote Oldman. I love "Thunder Chord" and "Tear Of The Moon".

Two Bears.

I love listening to Carlos Nakai, especially with Peter Kater on the piano. The music sounds like it's coming live from the angelic realms ...

Actually you can play traditional sheet music on a Native American flute (if the song is limited to one octave).

If there are two or three notes outside the octave range; you can hit those notes by playing the note in the octave the flute can play; but over blow the note to make the flute jump up an octave.

I would recommend for you to get a small booklet "Introduction To The Native Flute.

You may be able to buy it from High Spirits Flutes www.highspirits.com , and I have seen that booklet sold on eBay a few times. This booklet teaches proper care of the wood flute, and has complete finger charts for the five hole flutes, and the 6 hole flutes.

The flute Nazi!

Nah. R. Carlos Nakai is good; but IMHO Coyote Oldman is much better.

I also like Jonh Huling, Ah Neh Mah, and others.

Just raising a question--is there a purpose for 'learning' a song such as playing with a group? If not, I'd suggest that he/she just start playing and tabbing down their own things, or do they want 'native' tunes? R.Carlos writes his own stuff. He also has a book out of his music. He briefly goes into tab, but he's VERY big on learning music the traditional (see the note, know the note, play the note) way.

My suggestion, write original things. Native flute is hard to learn by ear. Each flute is different, sooooooo might as well write your own.

Just an observation, not a judgement.

I love that one, too, Allan, as well as Coyote Oldham's others. Ditto on Nakai's.

My very favourite though is John Rainer, Jr. I've had his two tapes since the late 80's and never tire of them.

This site is jumbled but does have two of his audio files which you can click on and listen: John Rainer, Jr.

And, this one has his tapes listed for sale: John Rainer's tapes . They are WELL worth it.

Thought you might also be interested in thisNative American Music Sampler;

and, here's another of my faourites: Keith Bear samples at amazon.com.

If you do PalTalk, there are a number of Native American music rooms in there, some with live flute playing which are just wonderful.

Also, I would urge you to listen to AIROS-American Indian Radio on Satellite for more good music and artists.

This is one of my favourite types of music and I have a small flute which I am learning to play. I hoep this is helpful and look forward to hearing how it goes.

Thanks,

kat

An acquaintance is searching for melodies he can learn on an "Indian Flute", particularly ones which are 'angelic' in nature. Can't use written stuff, needs mp3s or other audio.

Some non-musical acquaintances steered him to me, I have no knowledge of this area but thought maybe some 'Cat would have a link or two??
