Subject: RE: BS: Olympic Pipeline Sentencing From: Deckman Date: 19 Jun 03 - 08:28 AM There have been many investigations and fines, much fingerpointing, dodging etc. If you'll go to google and punch in olympic pipeline, you'll find several reports, investigations etc. One of the scarier parts of this story is the the actual Olympic pipeline runs very close to, and in some cases above, the surface, for several HUNDRED miles in the Puget Sound region. I actually have stumbled into it several times over the years, not realizing it was there. Our great fear of course is that if it could happen once in downtown Bellingham, it could possibly happen again somewhere else. Bob Nelson, Everett, Washington |

Subject: RE: BS: Olympic Pipeline Sentencing From: LadyJean Date: 19 Jun 03 - 12:07 AM I'll bet you anything there's a lawsuit to follow, and Olympic Pipeline will pay through their proverbial proboscis. Lawyers can be very useful sometimes. |

Subject: RE: BS: Olympic Pipeline Sentencing From: Sorcha Date: 18 Jun 03 - 11:53 PM Oh well. It's the same everywhere. Who you are, what you do and how you spell your name means a LOT in the 'Justice' system. Just ask me for more if you really want to know. From the Cop's wife and the Felon's Mom......... |

Subject: RE: BS: Olympic Pipeline Sentencing From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Jun 03 - 06:07 PM "Manager" is an ambiguous term - but I'd imagine that anyone who actually got jailed for something like this would be pretty low on the company food-chain. It seems that nobody important and rich ever gets banged up for more than a few hours. (Leaving aside Jeffrey Archer) |

Subject: RE: BS: Olympic Pipeline Sentencing From: Deckman Date: 18 Jun 03 - 05:51 PM Kat, Thank you for posting this more detailed account. When I started this thread, my news was just off the TV. As well we all know, it takes time for the story to come out. And, I well suspect that this story is far from over. I find it interesting that the Judge suggests that the one person stay within the system to make corrections. I dunno! I think this is a classic "David and Golieth" story, wherein big business, meaning huge dollar interests, will usually succeed over safety issues. CHEERS and Thanks, Bob(deckman)Nelson |

Subject: RE: BS: Olympic Pipeline Sentencing From: katlaughing Date: 18 Jun 03 - 05:23 PM According to KATU News, the company was also fined $112 million. The boys were 18, 10 and 10 years old. Sure doesn't seem an adequate sentencing to me, but the victims' families had interesting comments about it as did the judge, from the looks of it. What a terrible and sad thing to have happen. kat |

Subject: BS: Olympic Pipeline Sentencing From: Deckman Date: 18 Jun 03 - 03:34 PM I just heard on the local TV news that the "manager" of the Olympic Pipline Co., has been sentenced to six months in prison, the most severe sentence available to the Judge. There will be two more employee sentences announced today. HOORAY! This was a horrible event that happened four years ago, 1999, in Bellingham, Washington, USA. Because of missmanagement and lack of safety education, three young people died in a horrible fire that descended a creek bed running through the middle of this town. My personal connection with this event started when my son-in-law called me from Bellingham, in a panic and on the run. His wife and their two girls were 6 blocks from the explosion. He had simply thrown everyone in the car, grabbed his cell phone, and they were on their way North to the Canadian border. He called me to ask me to find out what happened. Hopefully these sentences will teach someone a lesson. I do hope that we can next get the CEO's of these careless comapies. |
