Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: GUEST,Katelyn Date: 23 May 04 - 06:07 PM I have just heard of this group from a friend - does anyone know where they are based and when can I get to see them? She saw them in North Yorkshire last year. Has anybody seen them live in performance, because their CD is great. The comment from Crane DRiver above is interesting because they really Do seem to be able to sound like whatever they want to - music hall, brass band, session folk group, but it is all great. How many of them in the group? do they have a mailing list that would tell me about their upcoming concerts? If you can help me I would be very grateful - Thank you |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: Blowzabella Date: 16 Sep 03 - 08:10 PM Further to dolphin's earlier message, they are touring quite a bit in December with their Christmas show - The Carnal and the Crane - they're really a cracking bunch of performers, why not see where they are near you and get along to see them. I'll admit I'm biased, cos I've seen em, but do try and see them, they're rare and just that little bit special. |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: Blowzabella Date: 11 Aug 03 - 08:24 PM I understand that there's a series of The Mayor of Casterbridge to be screened this autumn (UK) and the New Scorpion Band appear in that as the Dorchester (ooops) I mean Casterbridge Town Band. It was made some time ago but is only now being screened. Thank heavens I've got my TV reception sorted!!! They've also got a tour coming up this December - the dates are on their website. |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: Jack The Lad Date: 19 Jul 03 - 05:12 PM They are a great band and wonderful friendly people. They played at the Jacob's Ladder Festival in Israel in'97 or '98 and were one of the most talented and authentic bands ever to have played here. Jack The Lad |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 19 Jul 03 - 03:46 PM They've been at a good few festivals I think. Why aren't they better known? I suppose is, what is the process by which bands and artists get well known in folk music, and that's worth a thread in itself. There must be some bookings and some publications and so forth which matter more than others. There are people who are far better known than Tim Laycock and the Scorpion Band who would just about be fit to carry their instruemnts. |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: Blowzabella Date: 18 Jul 03 - 09:37 PM For those of you who don't know of them, have a look at their website at www.new-scorpion-band.com - it has sound clips - what Tim Laycock can't do with that concertina ain't worth knowing (anyone seen his 'Bells of St. Mary's'!!!) All the rest of the band are incredible musicians in their own fields too - they come together from the classical and early music worlds and somehow touch a spot, with regard to playing folk music, that is accomplished and entertaining yet, reflects the different 'sounds' of different periods, without being a 'period music' group per se. They are a bit special, in my 'umble opinion. It's true - they should be more widely known. |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: GUEST,dolphin Date: 07 Jul 03 - 06:19 PM Tim and the New Scorpion Ban are doing a tour around Christmas time in the North of England - great sounds If you want CDs go www.chanteycabin.co.uk dolphin |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: GUEST,Jamie Date: 07 Jul 03 - 06:06 PM Just thought I'd come back on this - I got two CDs from their website - 'Folksongs & Tunes of the British Isles' and 'The Carnal & the Crane' (which is very Christmassy). I have to say I'm really pleased I did - both albums are brilliant, but it's hard to believe that the boisterous tunes are from the same people as some of the other tracks, which are full of really magic and complex musical harmonies. See what you mean, Crane Driver, about them sounding like whatever they want to. How come they're not more well known? Why're they not on at Festivals? I've seen Tim Laycock a number of times, but only on his own. |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: Ralphie Date: 30 Jun 03 - 02:54 AM Mr Driver...(With respect!) Anyone who plays any form of Duet must be slightly mad anyway!!... At least you and I don't play what is referred to as "The Betamax" of Concertinas, namely,.............The Jeffries Duet!! Keep on squeezing Regards Ralphie |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: GUEST Date: 29 Jun 03 - 03:01 AM Iris Bishop actually plays the same (McCann Duet not Crane) concertina as you do Ralphie and was playing it exeptionally well at the ECMW last Sunday. |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: GUEST,'tern'er Date: 28 Jun 03 - 09:26 PM I saw them at Lancaster and was well impressed - a breath of fresh air - Mellstock Band / Magpie Lane, but somehow with more panache than either....wonderful band - get to see them live if you can, although I don't think they come 'north' very often... |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: Ralphie Date: 20 Jun 03 - 01:25 AM And (apart from Iris Bishop), In Tim Laycock, they have the finest Crane Duet player in the world (IMHO!!) Regards Ralphie |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: Crane Driver Date: 19 Jun 03 - 07:12 PM Oh yes, brilliant band. What do they sound like? Just about anything they want to, from an a cappella folk quire to an Irish session via Victorian Music Hall, and they do it all superbly. One of my favourite bands. Andrew |

Subject: RE: New Scorpion Band (?) From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 19 Jun 03 - 01:46 PM Lovely band. Well worth buying one of their records to see if you agree with that judgement. Some similarities to the Mellstock Band, if that's any help to you. |

Subject: New Scorpion Band (?) From: GUEST,Jamie Date: 19 Jun 03 - 01:40 PM Can anyone tell me anything about this band? I found my way to their website while looking for information on Tim Laycock, but I can't play sounds on my computer, so I've no idea what they sound like. Anyone seen or heard of them? |
