Having had the experience of attempting to remove Phoebe from various places whilst her mother attempts to do something without a small child clinging to any available piece of anatomy, I heartily approve of the new name and can testify to it's appropriate nature.

The nearest I got to a childhood name was "madame". Or possible "Oi you"

Award for the most brutal reply to the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" by a six year old, goes to my cousin Brian who answered "Not you" to the school child psychologist. Bless him.

Regretably Dave, she was given a melodeon of her very own about 3 years ago. She also plays piano and is learning the violin and recorder... there's no hope for the Western world.

Bee Dub Yell - she already indulges in many varieties of strange and unusual behaviour - at the moment she's being a kitten and refuses to eat anything unless it's served in a small green plastic dish. I'm just arranging a visit to the vet for her. However, as the film was made when I was born, and it's not been on UK terrestrial TV for a while, then we won't have seen it.

She chose Limpit (sic) because that's what I called her one day after she spent the whole day adhered to my leg in a fit of what I can only term danged cussedness. Ever tried using the toilet with a small child attached to your leg? The spelling is hers.

Steve Parks - I saw that show with my 2 year-old nephew (& I think it would have been 10 years ago, my how time flies) & if I saw the name in print - well, 10 years is a long time ago!! Jack named his car after the cute little car, & Amy decided to name herself after it, both children were obviously impressed by it.

Is the show still being made?

This wouldn't have anything to do with exposure to a 1964 movie starring Don Knotts called "The Incredible Mr. Limpet", would it? Many people who are exposed to the movies and/or television performances of Mr' Knotts develop an unhealthy fixation known as "Knottsmania". It is a relatively common disease here in the States and it just may have jumped the Pond.

Here are some common symptoms:

1) Phoebe walks around asking "Where's my bullet?"
2) Phoebe begins referring to Liz as "Aunt Bea"
3) Phoebe begins referring to Manitas as "Andy"
4) Phoebe refers to any of her friends as "Opie"
5) Phoebe begins driving a 1962 Ford police cruiser with "Town of Mayberry" on its door
6) The Dillards (as recorded in the early 60's) becomes Phoebe's favorite band

If Phoebe exhibits any of these symptoms, just be patient. There is no known cure for Knottsmania, but it is usually a relatively short-lived illness. She should be back to normal by the time she reaches puberty.

And yes, she's been at school since she was 4.

Cluin - so kind of you to provide the link - there were a couple there I wasn't aware of.... now would you like to come and explain them to a 7 3/4yr old girl who doesn't think willies are useful for anything except peeing with?

sounds good; does she know what a Limp Biskit is though??? Probably the meaning, if not by that name...

I remember a few years' back at a pagan gathering, some young men went through their manhood rite of passage. When after their night-long experience in the woods, they were presented to the community, they were called by their "new" names they'd chosen. One was "Kodiak". One was some Hebrew-sounding wizardy name like "Ela-ka-ZAAR." My friend Ted's 13-year old son Jeff chose, perhaps sarcastically, "Tripe." I still laugh when I think of it.

You should buy her a CD of Limp Biskit, if the music doesn't appeal, the spelling will suit.

Phoebe/Limpit can be very explosive at times - she knocked the s**t out of Linda's son Tom and his friend at one of our BBQs - even although they were twice her age.

Liz - "no way I'm explaining THAT meaning of limp to her until she's at least 16!" - I don't think you'll need to in that case - having met Phoebe, I think she'll be explaining it to you long before she reaches that age. She'll probably be able to suggest causes and remedies as well !

1) Probably a sound move, Liz, if she's grown out of brattishness (wait till the teens!)
2)You'll never be an ex-parent, Steve, she'll prbably come back, if the papers are to be believed, until house prices drop! Glad she's made the wise cultural change though!

Which animated pedal-car in the British children's TV show is called Vroom? Is it the one we know an love as Brum? (Short for "Brummagem", alternative name for Birmingham. The car is modelled on the old Austin 7, once made at Longbridge in Brum.) Saw him (her? it?) filming in Brum a couple of years ago. Very entertaining. My daughter has chosen to live in Brum, and calls herself a Brummie, despite being brought up in Staffordshire. Still, at 20 I suppose she's old enough to make up her own mind; and at least she's not living with/off me any more: something for you to look forward to, Liz!

Of course, with minimal changes, other options are available...for example Limepit, a place where one disposes of unwanted corpses in cheap detective novels. Dimwit is obviously not appropriate for such a child of such parents... Oh well, this too shall probably pass.

She hasn't started school yet, has she? Her classmates will come up with all sorts of good names. I remember a woman who, during the Tolkein craze of the early 70s, named her son Bilbo. You can imagine what that morphed into!

Might I suggest "Limpet" as an alternate spelling. "Limpit" suggests an affinity for armpits and joints of limbs.

Bratling, aka Phoebe, precocious daughter of Liz the Squeak and Manitas, would hereby like it known that she no longer wishes to be called Bratling.

Therefore, if I remember, she will be known as Limpit (sic) - from her habit of clinging on to things like the alternatively spelt mollusc.
