it seems that turban would not be very aerodynamic--so much surface
area for wind resistance! i think i will turn off the computer and
go outside and take a walk! i have been inspired!

A mate of mine recently celebrated his 83rd birthday by walking the South Downs Way from Winchester to Eastbourne. He also released his first CD.
He makes me feel slothful when in his company.

Here's a story about Fauja Singh who just ran in the London Marathon on Sunday, at the age of 93. It was the fifth time he's run it - this picture is of him when he ran it a couple of years ago when he was a mere 91...

Mind, he's not the record holder, but heplans to be. He is "thinking of retiring after this race but planned to make a comeback at the age of 98 to try to break the world record for the oldest marathon runner."

Jerry right up till he was 92 my dad was still walking at least 10 miles a day, we could never get him to stay still long enough to fit him with a pedometer.

One day when he was 90 he came limping into the house, he stood there like a naughty schoolboy when i enquired what had happened. Turned out he had gone to visit a local museum but found the gate locked, now most folk might have thought they weren't meant to enter, not dad he wanted to go in so he climbed the gate. result it moved and he ended up with torn breeks and a badly bruised leg.

Honestly if he could find mischief to get up to he did :)

From ErikThink@aol.com

Harpgirl,

I saw you had posted words to RUN MOUNTIAN. Do you have any idea who wrote this song?

If you could email me at ErikThink@aol.com, I would be most appreciative.

Sincerely,
Erik Darling

a man I met through the Woodcollectors Society begged me a few years ago to share the driving from Wash DC to Kansas for a meeting. He was 86 then, and I thought he was amazing. He had just returned from a trip to Costa Rica where he rode donkeys and tramped the jungles. Then, several years later, at 90, he went on a wood collecting trip to Peru, where he climbed up ladders to do the forest canopy walk! The local natives were amazed, as they had never even seen anyone that old.

As far as I know, 'ol Elbert is still around at about 93. Guess I ought to call and check, as he is my idol!

Dad never made 80, but walking certainly prolonged his life substantially. After a pre-retirement heart attack he quit smoking, cleaned up his diet, and walked, and walked, and walked. Even after some small strokes he walked. Even after prostate cancer he walked. Only after Mom physically couldn't get him out the door did he stop. Some of my nicer memories of his later years involve our walks together. Our last walk had me pushing his wheelchair down the gravel road a few hundred yards and back, his only response was a smile as he'd been mute for a long time.

I'd give anything for another walk with him.

Peace, Mooh.

My parents emigrated to Australia when my father was in his 70s - I finally managed to visit them a couple of years ago, weeks before his 90th birthday. He was complaining that he was starting to feel his age, apparently he now gets tired after walking around town for an hour or so. He was 92 a few weeks ago - once again he passed his annual medical and got his drivers licence renewed for another year. Hope I last as well as he does.

Len went ashore on the Normandy beaches on D-Day: it's the 60th anniversary of those landings this year. You can't keep a good guy down!

Andrew

Over the weekend I played music with The Soggy Bottom Bluegrass Association at The Sertoma Campgrounds near Dade City ( the sweetest smelling city in Florida). I played with a young lady in her mid 80's who played the hottest Dobro I have heard this side of Mike Auldridge. She never missed a lick and she even liked my playing! Damn, I didn't get her name. Her daughter does a Minnie Pearl take-off in her Bleugrass act.!

Reminds me of that old joke:

"Your father remarried last week at 108?? Why would he want to do that?!"

"Nobody said he wanted to...."

Good on Joe! Hope he's around for another 80!

Whoops.. that's what you get when you type with farmer fingers... the first sentence should have read, "when my Father was 80." He was still kicking around at 90, but couldn't walk more than a half mile, by then. He was still thankful for that, though.

Thanks Bobert. I'll pass along your good wishes to Joe..

When my Father was 90 years old he participated in a ten mile walk to raise money for a food kitchen. He was very short-legged, so he had to take a lot more steps than most people to walk one mile. But, he was determined to do it. As the walk wore on, he was left further and further behind the rest of the walkers and would have finished dead last, except for a little six year old girl. Ten miles is as long a walk for a six year old as it is for an 80 year old, so after the first few miles, they locked step with each other, and finished in a tie. By the time they reached the end of the walk, most of the walkers, their families and watchers had left for home. But, that wasn't important. They were both proud that they made it. No matter how long it took.

Now, on May 27th, a dear friend of mine will celebrate his 80th birthday. There will be a lot of singing and rejoicing, when the bass singer in my group, Joe Evans, hits that magic number. Six months ago, Joe couldn't stand up straight, and could barely walk across the room. Last weekend, he lugged his treadmill up from the basement and is building the strength in his leg. I don't think that Joe will be able to walk ten miles on his birthday, but it's a blessing that he can walk at all.

For the last few years, my definition of old has been "ten years older than me," and it will always be my definition. There are a lot of high-mileage models here in Mudcat, so it's encouraging to remember that some people at 80 can still walk circles around us.

It ain't over, 'till it's over.

Jerry
