Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: Bill D Date: 23 Aug 04 - 12:10 PM so, j0hn, what is a cute, 4 leggged, hooved animal that provides venision? and what would we say if we found they liked our Guiness? "the deer little dear drank our bear"? Oh, it's a slippery slope, this language we pretend to use. |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 23 Aug 04 - 09:57 AM Elfcall, I've read reports of Indian Elephants raiding villages and getting drunk on rice beer. It sounds quite frightening and people can get killed. I can't find the more recent reports I had read but here is one example. |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: Rapparee Date: 23 Aug 04 - 09:50 AM I've seen hummingbirds visit and revisit feeders in which the sugar solution has fermented. Their flight patterns change after a few visits. And they no longer hum, but sing the words right out loud: "Goddamn them (hic!) all! I wash tol (hic!) We'd cruish the shes fer 'merikan golt...." Well, anyway, they do seem to enjoy their little tipple. |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: GUEST,Elfcall Date: 23 Aug 04 - 08:53 AM Reaing Sorcha's description of a TV program with drunk animals reminds me of a similar prog I watched over 15 years ago when elephants were eating fermenting fruit. African elephants can do a lot of damage when they stagger! The photoshoot from the following morning was also funny - elephants with hangovers! John I had a boxer dog who loved Newcastle Brown - If I had any I would have to open it quietly otherwise he would be there hassling me for a drink! Elfcall |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 22 Aug 04 - 05:11 AM The drunken monkey martial arts style (as well as the other classic 'monkey' styles - wooden, stone, baby, etc) allegedly owe their genesis to the guy being locked up in the village pokey for misbehaving. He watched how the monkeys came into the village and stole food and the occasional bowl of booze. The antics of the monkeys when attacked, or being driven off inspired the moves of the various styles, and the most fascinating (and difficult) one was the drunken monkey - because it tended to move dizrhythnmically, and thus was most unpredictable. Of course the 'drunken man' style exists, but that has a different genesis story, based on some fishermen I believe. Robin (I'm not making this stuff up!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: Shanghaiceltic Date: 21 Aug 04 - 11:50 PM In southern Africa when the marula fruit ripens and drops it is eaten by many animals. It is in a natural ferment stage and said animals can be seen showing signs of intoxication, staggering round, giraffes with bendier necks, and very unwise monkeys or apes. In South Africa a liquor called mompai (I think that is how it is spelled) is made from the maraula fruit. It is like white lightning. |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: Terry Allan Hall Date: 21 Aug 04 - 04:20 PM Sounds like the beginning of a great ad campaign... ;) Back in '83, when I was touring a lot in Alaska, I would often crash at trailer camps...one night a bear got into someone's Winnebago and polished off a big bottle of Yukon Jack...the beast got quite wasted! Next time I was there (maybe 3 months later), I asked the proprietor about the bear and he told me that now it came back almost daily, so they'd put a bowl of hootch out for it...it was a very popular attraction for that camp! |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 21 Aug 04 - 03:32 AM So now we know just where that bear with sore head is.... I must admit I was vaguely hysterical when I heard it on the news yesterday, but they made no mention of it's preference! Eating windfalls (the apples fermented inside the lamented and made cider inside her inside) is understandable, it's a natural use of natural excess, but to actively steal cans and puncture them to get the contents indicates a real problem. I wonder if Booboo got him onto it or if Gentle Ben is so gentle because he's stoned all the time? Hello, My name is Winnie and I've got a drinking problem. Christopher Robin drinks it all. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 20 Aug 04 - 06:55 PM Sorcha, I remember watching a documentary where monkeys were getting drunk. It may well be connected to this article from the BBC. I've never seen an animal get drunk first hand but I do know a dog who is particularly partial to the head of a pint of Guinness (but will take other beers) you may have met. I can't remember whether Ben (a German Shephard sort of golden lab coloured) was in the pub the night you encountered "the rudest woman in the world". I will often dip my finger in a glass and let him lick it but Ian (the owner) sometimes puts a small amount (probably less than 1/8 pint to 2 pints water) of his Guinness into the water bowl and Ben seems to love it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Aug 04 - 10:11 PM Far be it from me to risk getting into another argument, but Rainier Beer doesn't come in a green can. It's a light colored can with the bright red name Rainier emblazoned across the front, and sometimes a red band at the top and bottom. There is some kind of ale from Rainier (in a green can), but it isn't the same thing. I even found one on a Japanese site. I even found a review that might have been WRITTEN by that bear: Guest Review - Sam O: My heart breaks that Pabst owns this beer now. I'm sure the taste has suffered, but I'm still sending the original review. This is a delicious beer. Absolutely caught me off guard first time I tried it. At $4.99 a twelve pack I figured it would just be the swill du jour. Uh-uh. This is clean, crisp, refreshing. Deeper golden color than the mass-produced "lagers" made by the Big Three. This beer is an undiscovered gem; and since you can only get it in the Pacific Northwest, Montana, Wyoming, and occasionally Colorado, hopefully it'll stay undiscovered, and not suffer the dummying down that Olympia did when it went nationwide. Do yourself a favor if you find yourself in the Northwest Rockies, seek this beer out. (12/27/2003) SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: Bill D Date: 19 Aug 04 - 07:26 PM I wonder what he'd do if they left some GOOD beer out for him? Would he still go for the "Green Death"? (Ranier comes in this green can) Trouble is, most of the good beer is only in bottles, and that might be a problem... |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: Don Firth Date: 19 Aug 04 - 07:22 PM Saw that on the local news last night. They showed film of the bear sleeping it off in a tree. He was really hung over, any way you wanted to look at it! One sorry looking bear. But later he was lured very easily into the trap, ignoring the donuts and such and heading straight for the beer (Rainier). They relocated him, presumably well away from the camp ground. I wonder how long that'll last!?? The newscaster offered the opinion that the bear may have a bit of a problem. "Hi. My name is Yogi, and I'm an alcoholic. . . ." Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: Beer Bear? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 19 Aug 04 - 06:31 PM I suppose he spilled a lot of what he was slurping up, or he'd have gone straight to the DTs, drinking 36 of them. I worked in a large campground in North Cascades National Park, up the road from Baker Lake. During the summer at the entrance station I kept a few demolished coolers to show what bears could do. And once hunting season was around, I got rid of the coolers, so I wasn't advertising that we had bears. SRS |
