Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'I Shall Arise and Go to Jesus' From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 20 Oct 04 - 09:54 AM df, I fell in love with the Early American hymn tunes when I was a child and first heard "Holy Manna," (Gather Ye Who Now Would Worship...). You can find lots of these tunes at Southern Harmony (the William Walker hymnbook). here The midis at this site have the tune in the tenor, so make sure you hear the tune. Check out the tune "Resignation" at this site. Once you find a tune you like, you can check out the words at this site, and then search at the Cyberhymnal for other hymns using that tune. You can also search the Cyberhymnal for tune names. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'I Shall Arise and Go to Jesus' From: GUEST,dfrankdooley@yahoo.com Date: 20 Oct 04 - 09:15 AM Thank you very much for all of these replies so far!!! I was told that "I Shall Arise... would have other titles, but that it would be "a well-known song". The tune is hauntingly beautiful and I play it almost every day (for the last couple of years), I love it that much. I got the tune out of a Mel-Bay guitar book "Complete Gospel Guitar" by Duck Baker who used to perform with Molly Andrews. He was so very kind to respond to my email and pointed me in the shape-note direction. Thank you again, for the resources and the education. Take Care df |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'I Shall Arise and Go to Jesus' From: Janie Date: 20 Oct 04 - 08:59 AM I'm at work right now, but have several sets of lyrics to this melody at home which I will compare to what is available from these links and post if they are different. One is called something like "Far, Far Away from My Loving Father" with the prodigal son story. One is "Come thou Fount", and 2 are "I Will Arise." The version of "I Will Arise..." that I have from my grandfather's old United Baptist (AKA old Regular Baptist) book has many, many verses and appears to have combined "I Will Arise..." with "Come Thou Fount." Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'I Shall Arise and Go to Jesus' From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 20 Oct 04 - 08:28 AM "Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy" is at the Cyberhymnal here. It has the "I will arise..." words in the chorus. The version linked-to is the Restoration tune, but be sure to check out the link to the Beech Spring tune also. (Beech Spring was the tune used as background music to Ken Burns' Lewis and Clark TV special.) These two tunes make a beautiful medley when juxtaposed. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'I Shall Arise and Go to Jesus' From: GUEST,robinia Date: 20 Oct 04 - 06:26 AM Yes, that's a great rendition of "I Will Arise" on "Sharon Mountain Harmony" but I confess that I first learned the song as a "Cradle Hymn" from Ruth Crawford Seeger's American Folk Songs for Christmas. In that guise it goes: Hush my babe, lie still and slumber, Holy angels guard thy bed. Heavenly blessings without number Gently stealing on thy head. How much better art thou attended Than the Son of God could be When from heaven he descended And became a child like thee. Soft and easy is thy cradle, Coarse and hard the Savior lay When His birthplace was a stable And His softest bed was hay. The shape note arrangement of this tune is found in OSH (Original Sacred Harp) as "Restoration"; with chorus ("I will arise") and verses ("Come thy fount of every blessing") pretty much as Bill Destler sings them. And of course, with a repeated chorus, "I will arise" (and it is "will") goes on for a lot longer than the Cradle Hymn, so I was very happy to find it -- any excuse to extend a beautiful melody! By the way, I was lucky enough to be at Pinewoods music camp the same year that Lucy Simpson (also on Sharon Mountain Harmony) was there. At mealtimes, it seemed like her table never stopped singing... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'I Shall Arise and Go to Jesus' From: Nancy King Date: 20 Oct 04 - 12:49 AM "I Will Arise" is done by Bill Destler of Rock Creek on the Folk-Legacy album titled "Sharon Mountain Harmony." We discussed it in this thread. This is one of the finest albums ever made, IMHO, and anyone who is interested in gospel music or just loves great harmony singing should consider buying it (available from Folk Legacy). Unfortunately, I can't seem to locate any of my several copies of it at this particular moment, but if nobody posts lyrics by tomorrow night, I'll dig my LP out of the basement and see what I can do. Subject: Lyr Req: 'I Shall Arise and Go to Jesus' From: GUEST,dfrankdooley@yahoo.com Date: 19 Oct 04 - 11:12 PM Hello, (Sorry, I posted this in another thread) I have been looking for the lyrics to "I Shall Arise and Go to Jesus" for quite some time without any luck. I play a version of it on the guitar, but no lyrics. The author of the guitar book suggested that I post in Shape Note forums. Thanks for any help/direction. Take Care df |
