Subject: RE: BS: central park gates From: Alba Date: 14 Feb 05 - 03:56 PM I want to know what they do with the wood from the gates and the saffron cloth once they take the Gates down. I could build something really nice with all the Materials! Actually I think it looks pretty amazing from the air, weaving it's path through the park....it didn't, however, look like I thought it might.....I had a vision of Gates with Saffron Cloths blowing in the wind like prayer Flags. Not just hanging like Curtains....still....guesss that's why I ain't the Artists eh!!! Ill stick to Music.....lol Blessings Jude |

Subject: RE: BS: central park gates From: Stilly River Sage Date: 14 Feb 05 - 03:35 PM Hard to get out of that slide program, but it shows some I hadn't seen before. I thought the Biscayne Bay islands were quite attractive, and that gorge in Colorado was interesting. The running fence in California got a lot of attention at the time. I've always wondered what the rate of vandalism is that they have to deal with, or if these works of art lead charmed lives? SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: central park gates From: GUEST,milk monitor Date: 14 Feb 05 - 02:15 PM Lovely stuff. This link may or may not work, but it is a slide show of a few of Christo's other installations....including a coastal bay in Australia and a fab tree in Switzerland. His draper must love him. Subject: RE: BS: central park gates From: GUEST Date: 14 Feb 05 - 01:50 PM They look beautiful. Wish the artist had called me--I could have done it for much less than $20 million, and faster too! |

Subject: RE: BS: central park gates From: DougR Date: 14 Feb 05 - 01:42 PM The project was totally self-financed by the artist. The people who have been shown on television appear to enjoy them. I think that's great! An argument could be made, I suppose, that the twenty million or so it cost to mount the show could have been put to better use, but then the money belongs to the person exhibiting. He should spend it as he/she wants to. DougR |

Subject: RE: BS: central park gates From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Feb 05 - 11:26 PM You need to do a search on Christo. He's been doing this kind of project for years. They always sound a bit whacko, but when you see the end result, they're pretty interesting. The temporary nature of them is as much of it as the yards of fabric required and the planning necessary to set it all up. It's not a particularly risky prediction to say that New Yorkers will be pleased with the outcome. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: central park gates From: GUEST,bflat Date: 13 Feb 05 - 11:22 PM I've seen pictures and because of the reaction of people in the pictures I'd have to say they are wonderful. I'm going to see them this week; only 40 minutes away. Art doesn't need to be justified over other worthwhile projects, open mike. It exists because it "is." don't you feel excitement about music? Subject: central park gates From: open mike Date: 13 Feb 05 - 07:40 PM all that hoopla for only a couple of weeks? they will be entirely removed in 17 days? could that much energy have been better spent building a homeless shelter? |
