We have a flag-staff bracket on the rail of our front balcony, and on high days and holy days we fly the appropriate flag -- the Maple Jack on Canada Day, the Fleur-de-lis on St-Jean-Baptiste, and the Welsh dragon on St. David's Day, Edmund's birthday and pretty well any other day when we feel either festive or fierce.

And a large red dragon on a green-and-white field is somewhat more visible than the house number. Better for parties.

Hey, anyone thinking of coming to this bash should realize something...Canada Day (Saturday July 1) in Ottawa is a helluva lot of fun if you like big parties where a whole city goes nuts, music and street activity abound, awesome fireworks. In short, several hundred thousand Canadians (and visitors) acting pretty un-Canadian if you believe the stereotypes about us.

I can't find the lineup for the Parliament Hill evening concert, but there's always some good stuff. In fact there's music everywhere, all weekend, practically all FREE!

And it's primo busking time if you like.

With a few weeks to go, here is the general concept of operations. The doors will open and the Welsh flag will fly at 2.00 p.m. on Sunday, 2 July. There will be plenty of beer and snacks, and a barbecue in the evening. Festivities will go on as long as people want them to. It isn't a school night, so there's no need to go home early if you don't have to. The spare bed is spoken for, but there is floor space available if you don't mind bringing your own sleeping bag. Some good musicians are coming, so it should be fun.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines tamasha as "an entertainment, show, display, public function". It's derived from an Urdu word that means something like "walking around for amusement".

I was being overly fancy, of course, in referring to the mob scene on Parliament Hill. If that isn't a tamasha I don't know what is.

Good morning, Mudcatters, from the other nation's capital (Ottawa, that is).

Edmund and I are having a kitchen party on Sunday, 2 July 2006. The justification (excuse) is a visit to Ottawa by that great guitar-slingin' singer Mia Boynton of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, accompanied by her mandolin-pickin' better half, Larry. The national tamasha takes place on Saturday, and we all have Monday off to recover, so Sunday is prime time for music and socializing on Old Saint Patrick Street.

Any Catter who reads this is welcome to roll up and contribute to the general joy. The Welsh Dragon will flutter from the front balcony and the barbecue will be at work out back. In between, let's have plenty of diddly music and ballad singin to bring the neighbours out. Festivities begin at noon, and continue until we are ready to quit -- whenever that might be.
